The Evo IX is, or was, the Subaru STi's natural predictor. The problem comes from people thinking that EVO's are just a durable as STi's...they're not.

Describing Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift as the "Redheaded stepchild of the franchise" is actually the most accurate allegory I've ever heard. It is by far the best of all the F&F movies, mostly because it ditches all the baggage of the previous ones and because it actually has a proper plot, is character driven and has a decent director who understood both the subject matter and target audience. So double +1

The reputation of the Evo is completely different over here in the UK, it's the STI that's regarded as the weaker machine & is unable to take increased power levels without a larger outlay. I think Americans lack something called mechanical sympathy. 'oh it's a rally car so let do full bore launches all day long & then moan when something breaks' I used my Evo IV as my only transport for 6 years & I have regretted selling it every day since. It is a car that needs regular maintenance but the payoff is soooo worth it.
@somanymods8 жыл бұрын
I think the reputation is the same over here. as a Subaru owner all I hear is people talking about blown ringlands, spun bearings and exploding wrx 5 speeds. the sti 6 speed does have a reputation for being bulletproof though, maybe that's what he is referring to.
@Zerofightervi8 жыл бұрын
somanymods I've always had a bias towards Mitsubishi as my Dad has worked for the importer for most of my life, which also comes in very handy when I need parts, especially when I get them at landed cost :) The pure evil looks of the Evo always attracted me, plus the ability to embarrass cars cost loads more money.
@niravpatel658 жыл бұрын
+Zerofightervi Completely agree, so I am the owner of the Evo in the vid, and I maintain it very rigorously and the car rewards you when you do that! But you are so right, us Americans think we can wail on a car and think everything will be ok. Combine that with the Fast and Furious culture with this car coming to the US in 2003 and you have a bunch of people who modify the car to product +100-200 over stock with no regard to how any of the components will hold up. So from that respect I think Mr. Regular was just hinting that a Subaru would be able handle the abuse better.

Gotta say, Mr. Regular is on point about the build quality. I have an '09 Galant, and even though the interior is better sorted/more up to date than an Evo; it screams of cut corners and cheap plastics. But he's right about one other thing as well; if you drive a Mitsubishi, you love it. I've had my car for five years, and it's been a faithful companion for many road trips. I've heard of the reliability problems with Evo's, especially when thrashed, but that's not the case with most Mitsu's built around that time. As long as you drive like you have at least half a brain, they will last. Another good one RCR!

+Marquis M. Mitsubishi Motors has suffered through financial problems in the past and more often than not, it affects the product quality.
@IndyF1FanMarquis8 жыл бұрын
infiltr80r True. It seems Mitsubishi is always on the back foot financially. The late 90's and early 00's were actually an up point for them, and it showed in the number and development of vehicles they were producing. I would say, right now is definitely a down period again with the Evo going away, the Galant already discontinued and the focus on SUV's and the Mirage. Hopefully they can bounce back again before it's too late.
@Lol100000000000000018 жыл бұрын
+Marquis M. "Hopefully they can bounce back again before it's too late" With how the Outlander is a surprisingly good crossover, and how the Mirage exceeded sales expectations twice over, I seriously hope that Mitsubishi doesn't go the way of Suzuki and Isuzu.

To the owner of the car - you should look at replacing your rear diff and moustache bar bushings as well as your driveshaft carrier bushings (Energy Suspension and Torque Solutions respectively). That will most likely fix the clunk on shifting you experienced. Also look at the shifter linkage bushings (AMS makes a good set of these). I had the same issue on my Evo IX and the diff/moustache/driveshaft combination fixed it. Stockers are rubber and just wear over time.

as a owner of a similar car although much older (90 eclipse gsx) and knowing people who have owned evos and dsms i think they are much more reliable than people think. yes you have to change the oil every 2500 miles but ive not had a whole lot of issues out of my car and it sat for 13 years when i got it and the issues ive had can be attributed to that and ive never had big issues it idled funny due to vacuum leaks and a biss screw that was replaced with a bolt (which dont work a biss screw is tapered at the end) and ive replaced the alternator and all the belts just normal stuff. Most of the time when these cars end up broke its due to Mods before maintenance they want to just buy a older one and strap a big turbo on it and expect it to run forever and the new evos they think they can make 650-700hp on the stock bottom end and it will hold that power just not for very long

In Ëurope the EVO is regarded as a much better car than the Subaru WRX. The EVO is more precise, more reliable, faster and more forgiving. All in contrast to what is said in the (excellent) vid. However, the EVO is more sterile, more composed, less outgoing in character. More like a precision machine than brute force. But still.... faster at any rally stage.

As an STI owner that considered getting the EVO instead of an STI(there are very few AWD stickshift cars here in the states), I can say that longevity was a big concern. I can look on craig list all day and find dozens of STIs with high mileage that run and rattle like a children's toy all day. EVOs? I rarely see them in running condition with more than 80K miles and that is unsettling. The way my local mechanics describe EVOs is like a scalpel: razor sharp and precise but easy to break and disposable.

Bite Point is used in motorsport to the extent that a "Bite Point Find" button is often found on modern F1 cars. It's a gearbox/clutch mode that is used in conjunction with the driver slowing down to a crawl and then matting it in 1st gear while they wing on the clutch paddle and the electronics figure out where the most torque is transferred during the clutch and clutch paddle's travel.

The Evo has a stronger engine than STIs stock. But the 6 speed is weaker, which is why the majority of people get the 5 speed.

your review on this is exactly how I treat my 240sx with the s15 6 speed, People are always saying it is weaker to me. I'm not building my car for extremely high horsepower though so it is completely fine and is nice for the daily driving I do with my car.

haha, subarus aren't reliable. the Evo is often consider the more reliable of the 2. they both have points of failure.
@dudeshark24717 жыл бұрын
Casey Rodriguez It's actually the other way around. You buy the evo for more power potential, the subie for reliability yet still having a similar feel.

Casey Rodriguez I've generally heard/seen the opposite.

yeah for shure subarus are "considered" more reliable. but that dosnt mean its true. in a subaru, every, tiny, little, noise. is the sound of the head gaskets crying, trying so hard to cling on to a life that they never really had and every second they hang on to their short lives you know your 1 second closer to a replacement that at the very least means jacking the engine up, if not taking it out, to repair...
@nooranik217 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for an STi or WRX, but regular subarus, like your grandma's forester and your counsin's legacy, are generally reliable cars. They have things in their maintenance schedules other cars may not, but if you are good to them they will be good to you in return. That said, my buddy's WRX is a money pit. I am not sure if that is because of his modding addiction or the fact the car is broken all the time. If I had to guess I would say a 70/30 split broken to mod.

I have a 2015 fit, and i may be incorrect, but i wouldn't call the transmission "forgiving". 1st gear will jolt if you don't slip it long enough/are slightly off with the gas/ clutch control, and it pops into 2nd from first.

Evo's and Sti's both have their trade-offs. But saying the 4G63T is an unreliable motor is completely wrong, that's the Evo's strongest aspect. The 4G63T is a great motor and, stock for stock, is way stronger than EJ25's in Sti's(piston ringlands anyone?). But the Sti has the stronger transmission and differentials. PS: I've owned an Evo 9 and 10. Never had issues with either motor, only everything else in the driveline haha.

I wonder if it were possible to swap a Evo motor into a STi. that'll get some good power.

omg with enough with this ringland stuff. only the GR/GV imprezas were really affected by it, all others, the GC's and GD's were fine, granted the 5speed in the GD's wasn't that strong but still. and ringland failure happens because of driver error and dumb kids adding poorly executed mods and/or flooring it in 3rd all the time from 2000rpm... just dumb
@FiveTwoSevenTHR8 жыл бұрын
+Kyle Morgese it's mostly from the car running too lean from a bad tune. My local Subaru shop has about 10 Subarus waiting motors since they all suffered failure from spun bearings or ringland failure. They are all 06+.
@kcm7328 жыл бұрын
***** exactly, very typical for the gr/gv's .... Its because that particular ej25's fatal flaw was the ringlands were engineered too close together. I understand it has something to do with emmissions? And with running lean in combination with other factors, the ringlands fail

The evo slaughtered rally until mitsubishi dropped out of rally racing. I feel like evos are more hardcore sportscars, where the subaru is more reliable and well rounded. I would kill for an evo 5 though.

the 4g63 CAN be reliable but you MUST take care of it! I own a 98 GSX with a 6 bolt swap and it runs and drives perfectly. However I replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, hoses, plugs wires, an oil change every 3 or 4 months. I pride myself in how well I maintain the engine. I daily it except in the winter when I only take it out to romp in parking lots around town but the thing is it runs VERY well and I thrash it. redline all the time and it works excellently and sure the 6 bolt had a stronger bottom end and didn't have crank walk issues but neither did the evo with the "revised" 7 bolt. If you do not maintain it, and then seriously expect it to get you there without issues it WILL let you down. they aren't a bad engine but people beat on them, forget even basic maintenance, and then get all but hurt when they break down... the thing is making as much power as some 5.7+ liter v8's and is doing so with half the cylinders and one third the displacement with a ton of boost, that's tough on an engine! give it a break and treat it well and it will treat you very well
