Jensen heads with a Booster amp was the standard "hi end car audio" for the 80s. The Clarion EQ-Booster Amp was kind of the king of the hill at the time. My first car, and 86 Grand Am V6 had a Kraco tape deck with a Sparkomatic booster amp fitted where the center console pocket was, and some sony 2-way 6x9s in the back. Ran the factory front speakers off the radio's front channels, not on the booster amp. It was crasptastic by today's standards, but it was much louder than anything factory, and was relatively easy to install.

Very little modification was done to the car in order for it to work. The renntech air intake takes the horsepower to about 300 from about 180. It also had recaro seats. It sounds absolutely amazing!

I had a '71 Chevelle back then that had a Clarion tape deck as well as that same separate equalizer. Four speakers- two in the doors and a pair of 6X9's on the ledge by the back window. In the 83 Fox body, that is not a stock head unit. And the device under the dash is an amplifier/equalizer. Shaft mounted radios of the period, and earlier, only put out like 5 watts from the internal amp, and sometimes could only power 2 speakers. To improve power, they sold these "power booster" type amplifiers that you could install between the radio and speakers, and it would put out 40 watts and power 4 speakers. That particular unit is a fancy one, with a built in equalizer and VU meter. Most booster type amps of the period only had an on/off button.

It makes 326hp in the version that’s in my car (this was the highest rating of the non AMG versions, because it was pre emission regulations) It also has two variable cam „shift points“ and is really fun to drive. Even with the sloppy four speed auto it proppels my over two ton SL from 0-100kmh in 6 seconds! This particular one is tuned by Renntech, at least the intake. I’d love to know how that 280SL feels with this engine, must be a beast! P.S.: The dual inlets are stock for this engine, just the airbox is different

Somebody probably mentioned this in the comments before, but that equalizer in the 83 mustang GT is in fact an equalizer and power amp. They had something wimpy like 25w peak per channel, but had more grunt than the head unit's amplifier. My dad had a 79 2.3 mustang with one of these in it, and when he gave that car to my sis, he got an 82 GT and put another one of those EQ/amplifiers in it. It was just... a thing? you did with Mustangs in the 80s.

Takes the low power stock/cheap deck (~7watts rms, 25 "peak" per channel) to a "Hi power" (11 watts rms, 50 "peak") Before "high power" radios and cheap amplifiers were the norm, this was a cheaper/different option to up the power. The engine in that s13 is an SR20VET (NOT the DET) or possibly an SR20DET with a VE head swap. The SR20VET had nissans version of VTEC, in that not only does it have variable valve timing, but also variable valve lift! The proper SR20VET is a very rare engine, and IIRC only about 1200 were made. Therefore, it is most likely an SR20DET with an SR20VE or SR16VE head swap. Very cool!!

That Fox body Mustang radio looks aftermarket - 80's aftermarket. The separate eq was a common offering aftermarket - JC Whitney would sell a "300 watt eq" like that to boost wattage to your speakers - but was crazy distorted.

That spinning Carroll Shelby helmet had me dying, especially when the eyes rotated around peeking over the bottom of the trunk

The equaliser thing was common in the 80s, Renaults often use to come with them fitted, search for Renault 25 interior images for an example. That W113 looked like sacrilege, looked like it had an AMG V8 in it, out of a W129. 1:24

@1:30 renntech is a pretty established mercedes tuner, im not sure what kind of engine he's got in there but it looks like it might be an M119 V8 with some renntech modification
