This is the Navara here in Australia. Farmers and agricultural types love these simply because they will not die, they're simple to work on and they have no commercial frills. It just works. Also, bullbars here carry no connotations whatsoever. No political statement is made when you have a bullbar the size of a small African nation, it's there to simply stop or reduce the amount of damage to the vehicle when you're traveling 110km/h and a kangaroo decides it wants to leave this mortal coil in the most dramatic way possible.

They sort of fall into a convenient price point as well being cheaper than the bigger Patrol or Landcruiser as well as the Hilux or Triton which is more or less same-ish- but you're not degenerate enough to jump into some off-brand chinese rubbish that will kill you first time it rains. So Nissan sold a lot of these here because they were willing to choke the crap out of the price to the point basically anyone could get it on pretty easy money. Both the Hilux and Triton from the same era are 'better' in some minor technical reasons but not to the point anyone's going to really get excited about as a tradie dragging around a trailer through mostly crap roads and it'll just do that for about 20 years and half a million km before throwing it in the bin and getting another one.

Ah man, so disappointed that you didn't review mine that I had submitted a few months ago; 2013 v6 6mt pro4x. 0 mods, 0 rust. "this truck is so boring ... it's just a truck" is the highest praise you can give the Frontier. It's exactly what a "truck" is supposed to be. It's exactly why I love mine. No push button start, no electronic eBrake, 1 screen on the radio and that's it. Everything about it still feels "mechanical" unlike anything new that does it's best to completely isolate you from the driving experience. It drives like a solid rear axel truck. I'm under 6' tall and I can see over the bedrail. No frills. No pretentious "I'm compensating for something raaawr!!!" vents or styling or massive 7' tall grill. It's just... a truck. @@arthurs7882 Huh? Toyota appears to have revised their designs fairly significantly with each major generation. Trucks got physically larger compared to the models from the nineties. Sure, there was that refresh around 2012 or so that mostly left the chassis and underbody structure alone, but engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc have all changed wildly compared to the first generation. The D40 Frontier saw one minor body revision in 2009 when the front snout's plastics were revised so it stuck forward for better aerodynamics, and then in 2020 when the powertrain was swapped. That's basically it.

This generation Frontier is the automotive equivalent of that 16oz Estwing hammer at home depot, you know the one with blue rubberized handle. It works, it has worked, and it will work even when the strike face is dented and pitted from demo and the claw on the back is missing half because you were chipping concrete and the hammer is over 8 years old and the rubberized handle is slipping off the shaft you'll toss it in the tool box for the next job. These trucks are beloved in Mexico, so many older Mexicans in my area buy and use them for work because they know it works, no frills and no thrills, half of them for sale have 250-350k on them and probably still run fine. I was even looking into hunting down a 6mt with 2wd and a crew cab before I settled on my Ridgeline.

The 2005-2010's came with a hidden feature wherein the radiator would spontaneously crack, turning the transmission onto a strawberry milkshake dispenser. The Nissan Frontier, Japan's longer lasting companion to the 3rd gen Ranger. A cheap truck with no thrills that's smaller than the rest and cheaper than the rest. I've always loved the D40, not for it's styling or size, but because it lacks both of those. A Tacoma or a Canyon will never look right in my head painted white with countless dents and scratches from a life as a utility truck. The Nissan on the other hand excels at being exactly that, styled enough to be distinct but not so much as to try and draw attention to itself. It's an honest truck that doesn't try to sell you on anything, like the 3rd gen Ranger, it's soul purpose in life is to serve the owner as faithfully as possible. Nissan probably made the best truck in 2020 with the D40's last year of life, with the 3.8 direct injection engine and the 9 speed auto. Man I want one...

Another thing about the Frontier is that its entirely modular with a chunk of Nissans late 2000s/early 2010s fleet. Pathfinder, Titan, Armada, Xterra, and the Frontier all shared nearly indentical platforms. So you can bolt up nearly anything to this truck and it'll work. Like a VK56. 1st gen with the VG are bullet proof. 2nd gens had issues in the earlier years with a transmission line leaking coolant. Which destroys the transmission. But if you get a different radiator, get a different oil cooler or delete it then you’re good to go. Also do a differential breather relocation mod if you’re going in deep water or mud. If it’s high mileage make sure to replace the timing chain guides.

Well actually you do have a Frontier, just with an enclosed back, lol. I own a '13 Frontier and love it too. It does what a truck needs to do, and that's why I bought a truck. My wife gets the "fancy" vehicle (she has a Highlander, bought used of course because hell if I was dropping 50K on anything). Got my Frontier new in '13, 4x4, crew cab, V6, even the with the "special truck package" that added the bed extender, tow hitch, bed liner and a few other goodies for $28K, less what the dealership gave me, which was $12K for an '01 Tacoma that I swapped off my uncle two years prior for my grandma's old Buick (which was free) plus $8K. So I basically got paid $4K to drive that old Toyota for two years, lol. So essentially I got it for 24K plus an old shitbox Buick.

After having every other brand and size of truck, we traded a 2005 F-150 XLT 4.6 for a new 2012 Frontier SL RWD. Even though it’s not the barge the F-150 was, it is way more advanced and drives oh-so-much better. Much faster, handles way better, stops astronomically better, etc. The $36k-when-new F-150 XLT barely had ABS brakes, would warp rotors constantly, and had not one bit of traction or stability control, and had only minimal 1997-level power options (basic power windows, locks, mirrors, and remote entry). For quite a bit less money at $31k in 2012, the Frontier brought heated perforated leather seats with power adjustments on both sides, a brand name stereo with more speakers and sub, alloy wheels, a METAL fuel door (yeah, F-150 had a plastic fuel door and its hinge broke), a full-size matching alloy spare wheel, an already-done spray-in bedliner, plus a bevy of accessories such as a bed divider, adjustable tie-downs, wheel locks, cargo nets, carpet and rubber mats, etc. all included the Ford just never had (F-150 had carpet mats the dealer wanted to be stingy about, and they wore noticeably, unlike the Frontier’s thoughtful berber carpet mats that still look mostly new with more years and miles now). I realize the Frontier is not as large and tows a little bit less, but for what most people use and need trucks for, it was and still is a bargain. Also, I get soooooo tired of the “oh but it’s not a Toyota” thing. I used to run an import shop and we constantly replaced u-joints, water pumps, and occasional rear differentials on Tacomas, despite everyone’s chest-thumping about them. Our Frontier is sitting at 190,000 miles now and the only malfunction so far were the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors around 170k miles. It has had literally no other issues and maintenance has been easy/normal. The cabin design is also more comfortable, with a lower floor and better seat position that lets one feel less claustrophobic than in the Tacoma.

It has a nice interior, great factory sound system, and manual lever 4x4 with an LSD in the rear and self locking hubs up front. I raised the rear 1" with an add-a-leaf kit (front is torsion bars), some M/T Baja's wrapped in K02's and a safari bar with lights. I beleive the frontier out preformed the Tacoma and was less expensive. If you go 2013 and newer they were super reliable. Same as the Exterra. Any ways it's just a midsized 4x4 and it does its job. Finally got rid of my frontier after 10 years and 258,000 miles. In the entire time I had it, I had to replace the exhaust header, the rear leaf spring, and two of the brake calipers. Beyond that no other unnecessary repairs beyond basic preventative maintenance, it never once left me stranded. Two days after I parked this and got my new car the rear differential completely gave way and leaked all the fluid out, like it was relieved to finally be done. Treated me well, though now that the tacomas have 4 wheel disc brakes (which in 2013 they did not) I would get a Tacoma if I ever wanted another truck. Still, got me to the moon and started the return journey.

It sounds like it's pretty good at doing actual work, but it isn't showy, it's not going to stroke anyone's ego. Most people who want a truck for the sake of a truck but don't need it's actual capabilities want something a bit more stylized, like the Tacoma. Just bought a 2020 Nissan Frontier in April last year (yep, in 2021, used car prices raging, 2020 Frontiers were sitting on the lot at discounted prices). Why? I was coming from a 2001 Tacoma that was on its last legs. I'd looked at used Tacoma's knowing that new was out of my range. After several days trying to find something I didn't feel I was getting completely screwed over for, I looked at other manufacturers. I was able to get into the Frontier new for less than a 2013-2016 Taco with similar specs (TRD Sport vs. SV 4x4) and 60k miles. The truck has everything I need. Yes the appearance is dated, no I don't have Android/Apple nonsense (neither did the used Tacomas). After about 3 months of driving that sort of thing ceases to matter. Does it have enough power? Yep. Is it good in weather? Yep. Can it do my little lumber, yard and garage sale hauling? Yep. Is it easy for my 10 year old to get in out of? Yep. I absolutely agree with everything Regular said about it. And I still love it. It just goes.

I have a Chevy Cobalt and I swear it's invisible in traffic. I am constantly getting cut off or trying to prevent being cut off in traffic. Just last year it got hit one the right side by someone trying to use the shoulder before the turn lane started for a right turn. I have her back for a week and the other side gets hit and she spends another 4 weeks or so at the body shop. The first visit was almost 6 weeks!

4wd low IS essential for light trucks. Is it something you'll use every day? No, but 4wd high probably isn't either. Whenever I find myself needing 4wd, low range always gets the job done. Pull out some old bushes? 4x4 low. 5,000 lb trailer stuck in the mud? 4x4 low. Other vehicle stuck? 4x4 low. Y'all miss the point of the Frontier, and in general most trucks. It's meant for work. Rangers, Frontiers, and all the other midsize truck's 4wd systems are not designed to go in the snow like a Subaru. They're designed to go off road and do work like I listed above. When heavy duty work needs to be done you want 4wd low, not 4wd high.

I bought a ‘12 Crew Cab 4x4 brand-new. Great vehicle. Shitty fuel mileage. A deer finally killed it. They get the economy in line with other trucks in the category I’d buy another one. And yes, in 2012 at least, it was a far better truck than a Tacoma.

From the video and everyone's comments, I think it can be concluded that this is the truck for someone who doesn't want to think about their truck. Unremarkable, reliable, does what it needs to do. A perfect appliance. It is for someone who doesn't want to drive a truck, but has a reason they need a truck - opposite a large portion of truck owners. It sounds like it's pretty good at doing actual work, but it isn't showy, it's not going to stroke anyone's ego. Most people who want a truck for the sake of a truck but don't need it's actual capabilities want something a bit more stylized, like the Tacoma. This is for someone who would drive an Altima, but they need to haul stuff.

Just bought a 2018 2WD 4 cylinder 5 Speed. Owned 2 Tacomas before this, one was rear ended, the other ones frame failed due to a design error. Tacomas have open C style frames that overlap in sections and are rivited together. One of those overlaps is right where the frame slopes down where bed and cab meet. The overlap collects water, and can evetually fail. Had a truck that was pristine for its age minus where the frame failed at that juncture. These Nissans? Fully boxed frame rails. I was sold as soon as I saw that. Paid 15k-20k less than a comparable Tacoma and got a better designed stronger truck. The manual is way better than any modern toyota manual too. No regrets.

It’s a boring truck but this felt a little unfair for the Frontier. It doesn’t try to be anything other than a cheap and reliable truck that does one thing well and that’s work. It doesn’t wow with features or express intricate styling. It just says I’m affordable, I live forever, and I’ll do what you need me to do in my boundaries. My family has a ranch in south west Texas and the work Frontier we have has 280+ thousand miles on it if only rough terrain work miles. Other than a linkage cable that broke hitting a rock nothing on it has ever been replaced.

@@daywalker4029 Maybe If you buy the non hybrid version of the Maverick. If you're like many small companies, you may keep a truck to run for 10 years. When the batteries go bad on the hybrid version, replacement could cost more than a whole power train. The standard Frontier king cab with the regular bed was was an awesome light work truck. The Maverick is cool but you can expect the same reliability from this vehicle as an escape becuase that's the frame it's based on. And that's if you get the fully 4 cylinder version and not the hybrid. Not to mension that Manny don't classify it as a true truck and more of a small suv/crossover with utility bed.

I bought my grandpa's, 2012 Auto 4x4 SV sport package crew cab short bed, off my grandma a few months ago. It does truck stuff on the homestead great. Feed, t-post, occasionally IKEA, and picking up pallets. Planned mods are short: new headlights cause the stock ones are like having a cell phone light on the front. new headunit bc the bluetooh doesn't do music and i always forget my usbc to aux dongle (maybe new speakers but nothing crazy). Replace plastic bed liner with a spray in. Trailer brake controller for hauling hay rounds and building supplies. Know what's this has that the comparable year Tacoma doesn't, 4 disc brakes. The taco is a great "lifestyle truck", but i think the frontier actually does great as a utility vehicle that actually supports a lifestyle.

The frontier 4x4 selector doesn't give a crap how fast you're going, it'll go in at 78mph. Don't do that, but it'll do it. I personally find the 2nd gen frontier to be a blast to drive. With a heavy foot and at least a week of ownership of learning how to get along with the TCM in this thing, it's a riot to drive. 2010ish and on, no frontier is breaking down on you unless it's the new 3rd gen. This platform has an almost-plug n' play v8 swap from the titan making it even more fun- that and the suspension, too. This truck was a GOOD generation of 4x4 vehicles.

Its an old school small truck meant for light to medium work. The box is low so you don't have to climb into it when you are loading it. I bought mine in 2019, the last model before they changed the transmission and engine from a naturally aspirated. It gets crappy gas mileage and has no frills, just like a real old school truck. I tested out the taco and a bunch of other small trucks, but this drove like a real truck, and the engine is bullet proof, and it was under 35k. Mines stock except for a speaker upgrade. If you need bells and whistles, you upgrade to an aftermarket stereo. I expect to drive it forever.

Nissan & Toyota are notorious for keeping their trucks & SUVs long after everyone, including themselves, have introduced their vehicles successor's successor. It's the automotive equivalent of the PlayStation 2. Nissan have kept selling the D22 Pick-up in some markets all the way until 2015, that's around the time that the D40 Navara/Frontier got replaced by the brand new D23 Navara in most global markets. Nissan also still sells their 20+ year old Y61 Patrols in the Middle East right next to their aging 10+ year old Y62 Patrol/Armada. Toyota still sells the FJ Cruiser and 70 Series Land Cruiser in some African and Asian markets until this very day.

I got a spray in bed liner, nerf bars for the sides, k&n air & cabin filters (but no intake) & weathertech mats. There's not a whole lot else to get.
