Mr Regular, I own two 335i's with n54s. I'm also an independent mechanic who has worked on 335i's as my bread and butter for the better part of 2 years now! Massive fan of ya'll, glad you got an n54 in your hands. I wanted to say, it's probable in your car's situation that the boost solenoids/wastegates are not closing like they should be. In that segment where he floored it on that ramp, it should have been struggling not to spin the tires from the moment he hit the pedal. Looks like the car builds boost VERY slowly compared to a proper example. This is why I believe you are having to downshift on hills. In either of my 335i sedans, at any speed as long as I am above 1500rpm, I have NEVER had to downshift for a hill. yes, just 1500 rpm. You should be able to build at least 12-16 psi of boost that low. That's how nuts of a change it makes to the driving experience to have these wastegates/boost solenoids working properly. I've been with ya'll since 2015 and you finally got one of my favorite cars.... I'd damn near be willing to take a day or two off work, and come fix that thing for you guys ahahah.

I worked with a kid at a software testing shop that had just landed his first gig there, making all of like 35 to 40 grand a year. He and many other people there used to give me a hard time for willingly driving a 90s Miata. Everyone there had a sickening compulsion to prove out their worth through possessions -- cars, first and foremost. First thing he did with his newfound "fortune" was run out and buy a brand new 335. I remember the little T-Rex arm (his worked) and thinking how absolutely dumb it was, knowing it would inevitably break and be gratuitously expensive to fix (and thus never be fixed). He immediately drove the car like a typical BMW owner. Of course, he could not afford the car. Within a couple months he had to promptly trade it in for an Avalanche. This was over a decade ago. I'm still driving the Miata.

I always thought the upper-middle of the European range of 3 Series was the bottom of the US range; favoring naturally aspirated 4 cylinders instead of turboed six, cloth instead of leather, etc. Maybe "Business People's" cars isn't the right term - "Lower-Middle Management". Of course, if BMW can charge more for snob appeal, making a car a Velben good instead of something utilitarian, that's just profit for them. Yeah, but the American models are often higher spec. For example, the C-class is only available as a C 300 in the US. The C 300 starts at €57k (tax incl.) and that is a lot of money for a relatively small sedan. I'd bet most people here in Germany go for the cheaper C 180/ C 200 models.

In Italy these BMW 335i were sold in a very strange period. And was just the beginning of the decline of the automotive scene over here. Around the years 2000 road tax was “affordable”; dentists and other professional not-so car enthusiasts had enough wealth to buy M3s and 335is as imports from Germany just so save few bucks. But here comes 2007. At that time the Italian government needed cash, and immediately. So they called for “austerity” and what they did was add a second road tax (on top of the regular one) were you essentially had to pay 10€ for every KW after 185KW. Some dude in the government simply decided that anything with more then 185KW (250ps) it’s considered a luxury item so needed over-taxation. And boom! All of the sudden these folks that bought these 335i could not afford them anymore overnight. At a personal level, at that time I had two relatives one with an M3 E92 MANUAL and one with the 335i. The weeks following this “double road tax” both of them sold their BMWs for nickels. I believe the manual pristine M3 sold for 35K€ (the same as my new Golf GTI MKV at that time). To me the E92 M3 and 335i marked the end of an era in Italy, where people could actually own nice thing. Now the tax is still in place and you simply can’t have nice cars; even a pedestrian mid size SUV with 275ps it’s regarded as a luxury item. My relatives ended up swapping their hot bimmers with hatchbacks. I think I cried when I knew the M3 was gone. EDITED: just fixed some spelling.
@feedingfrenzy1232 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing, that's really interesting. From 2006-2007 here in the UK, annual tax for newly registered models went up but I would say it's still affordable for the masses. E.g a 2017 Mustang 5.0 is £520 for the year. It pains me hearing a lot of countries in Europe can ask for four to five figures to tax a car, even when it is decades old etc. Absolutely disgusting imo

@luigicornelio75102 жыл бұрын
This brings back so many (terrible) memories about that period. Such a shame that a country known for its motoring heritage has always had a tendency to cripple its citizens from enjoying nice cars. Before the 250 ps rule, let's not forget the decades of "luxury tax" on anything with an engine larger than 2L in displacement (38% VAT instead of the "regular" 18-19%). It eventually led to the national auto industry to "fold inwards" and cater specifically to the domestic market, thus becoming less competitive internationally. It also forced major automakers to quickly put together tiny 2L engines with crazy power figures just to keep up with the specs of the larger power plants. 20 psi of boost on a 1.6 or 2.0 L in the 80s? You can imagine the results. And that's why we can't have nice things

A friend of mine had a 335xi. Same year, same original colours, same trim package. He was on a mad power trip. He bought it on a whim after giving his '09 Impreza to his sister. He didn't even know how to drive manual and bought it manual. Instantly replaced the fuel pump, and had constantly electrical issues. He gloated that it made 400hp & 400 torques (it didn't), and constantly floored it. Purchased the sport exhaust to make more noise and chip tuned it. He got in two car collisions. Both times was parked. Once at a gas station, and once at a stop light at an intersection. It was put on a flatbed tow truck outside of his house about four times because it wouldn't start. He proceeded to sell it to a man in town, and then bought a used 2016 GMC Sierra Elevation for $10,000 too many dollars. The power trip continued. Fast forward to today, he got married, and now owns a 2020 Volkswagen Golf wagon because his friend owns the hatchback version.

@RothBeyondTheGrave2 жыл бұрын
If you don't know how to work on it, it will turn into a money pit before you even open the door. N54 is a whole different ball game. N54 owners think replacing mosfets in their dme is a regular, normal diy. 96% of people who own a car will never have to touch their engine computer, because they're usually built correctly. Somehow, 12 revisions is what it took to get the fuel injectors right because....BMW. 12. I still love them, but they're the nicest pieces of shit on the road, period.

@@buckeye392 hahaha thanks. I'm honestly fascinated by them. I don't understand how they can be so good, yet so incredibly bad. Engineering one of (if not the most) winning car in all of racing (e30 m3), yet still can't figure out how to get the heating element in the pcv valves in various chassis to stop heating & burning peoples cars down....after 3 recalls.
@buckeye3922 жыл бұрын
@@RothBeyondTheGrave I’d love to have one, but their concrete reputation for being fancy shitboxes has kept me far away from them. They’re sexy as hell and they’re built well (drivetrain aside), but I cannot comprehend how a company with such engineering prowess can perfect a chassis and then take a nose dive on other R&D such as the N54. I’ll continue to “appreciate from afar” and stick to my LSs and K-series’.
@RothBeyondTheGrave2 жыл бұрын
@@buckeye392 I hear you 100% on that. What's even more bizarre is how many "good" ones do slip through the cracks. I've had friends with e46's, e90's, & 1 friend who took an e92 m3 to 200k mi & all those examples had nothing but wear & tear items (with of course, rod bearings being done on the m3 lol.) My neighbor has had his e39 (pre vanos) since new & also has done nothing besides a cooling system refresh since '97. It's like there's a small number of "safe" ones, but once that 2nd-3rd owner neglect kicks in, it's over. I tried shopping for a few & it was actually funny how much worse & neglected the next one was. Things failed at 70k miles that will fail on a Honda at 270k miles, if at all. Can never go wrong with LS or K series!

I’ve had a love affair with E9X’s since I first owned one in ‘13. Since then, I’ve owned 8 E9X’s. 335i, 335xi, and the lesser known but no less magical 335D. These are my favorite cars of all time. I like them more than my current C7 Z06, more than my GT-R, more than anything I’ve ever driven. The steering, the engine, the everything. They’re driving bliss. To me, they’re heaven on wheels.

@zakbax72592 жыл бұрын
This was the last car my granddad drove (he’s not dead, just not in a condition to drive any more) and I’ll always remember it because we took a road trip in 2018 for a couple days to visit an auto museum and his brother. It wasn’t one of these exact models, it might’ve been closer to a base model performance-wise (or maybe even a diesel, I can’t remember) but it was an ‘07 3 Series regardless. Had a convertible top too but because this is Britain, it didn’t get much use.

Here in Massachusetts it's not even just Altima drivers, it's Maxima, Rogue, Xterra, Versa, and Murano drivers who all drive like assholes. They'll cut you off, tailgate you, and speed like a bat out of hell, then give you the finger and a bad look like you're the one in the wrong. Sure, I've seen BMW drivers who don't use their turn signals, but Nissan drivers? It's like they woke up, chose violence, and they're gonna make it everybody else's problem. Is it every Nissan driver? Course not. But it's a significant amount to where you start to wonder if these people really do have a death wish and want to take anyone they can with them on the way out.

I owned a 2008 e92 wonderful car.... Best car I've ever driven but that maintenance....ugh.... Four numbers every time I went in for service. FYI the seatbelt problem isn't the mechanics it's actually the seatbelt loses its stiffness over the years and the stiffness is what kept it on the holder.... So the hack on BMW forms that works quite well is you starch it like you did your pants in the 90s..... Spray some starch on the seat belt and iron it..... And today it's stiffens up and works just like new.... Just like a coooooooooockkkkerspaniel
