I made this. Just me, two cameras, the band and their manager on the road in Japan. First video I ever edited on my own. I got a bit carried away with transitions, hehe. Cut it in two weeks at MTV after hours when we got back. very 90s, but still holds up I think.

I remember back when this video was playing on Rage and Video Hits in the morning on Saturdays. It was the late 90s, the anime boom was just about to start when Neon Genesis Evangelion aired on SBS, video games were breaking into the mainstream off the back of Sony Playstation and JRPGs were the biggest genre in the industry thanks to Final Fantasy VII. Japan was the most fascinating place in the entire world to a teenage boy like me, and the fact that they were so well aware of this made Regurgitator even cooler than they already were.

My flatmate & I met Martin (Drummer) literally at our front door (in Fortitude Valley)! He was there for a photoshoot (with Jules, a photographer - who happened to be our other flatmate & worked next door at a studio). Martin noticed our downstairs recording studio through the door, saw us & started chatting with us about music. A nice guy - down to earth & laid back, not at all pretentious. I saw these guys dozens of times in my early 20's & they where fantastic live!

This is the direction Regurgitator should have pursued with vigor. Not the grunge indie vibe, that market was so completely saturated with bands. Given, that was the music that was popular at this time - but Regurgitator could have been a worldwide sensation in my opinion. Very talented musicians, and this song is so very, very fresh.

Back in '96, I was balls deep in to RATM, NIN, Deftones, Oasis, 311 etc. to my bluesy jazzy side like G. Love and Special Sauce, Medeski Martin and Wood, to my undying love for rap like 2Pac, Biggie, Tribe, The Roots. I also loved modern ska/punk like Rancid, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish and NOFX . All these indulgent name drops later is that Regurgitator was the first band I ever heard that combined every-fucking-thing I liked and they blew my balls off with Tu Plang. I'm high and drunk, Happy "2020 is almost 3 months to over" everyone!

Volumes could be written about the cultural / business changes in the industry since then, suffice to say they are utterly damning for anyone aspiring to the lofty heights this band and some of their contemporaries achieved. There is simply no capital invested in anything but established artists and with the glut of self published content on Spotify etc little opportunity to spawn in the digital age either (much less, make a living from it)

The commercial platform has gotten bigger meaning pushing a band/singer through the marketing machine carries a higher cost but it also has further reach/bigger payoff. It's a large investment for the record company so the template often pushes out shit so they can get a return. But like roidroid said, it's always been like this. Compared to 20 years ago it seems like the generic charting performers push their bit across several marketing channels in a coordinated campaign so you feel bombarded by a new release/tour or whatever. But the flipside is the less commercial stuff is so easy and cheap to access I don't know how it could possibly improve. *These* are the good old days.
