Absolutely, well said. Derek has put in his 10,000, 20,000 hours and then some! His musical ear and pitch perception are amazing and innate gifts but his ability to express those gifts on the piano came from decades of hard work.

It's very interesting how Derek thinks musically. He has a thorough grounding in all kinds of scales and modes and a lifetime understanding of musical patterns, yet he is not constrained by them. He can use them and manipulate them but he will also often create completely wild non-functional harmony in the moment that works perfectly. He always seems to know precisely what will work and what won't on a perceptual level.
