Shooting on the move can be accomplished with a few methods. Both take practice, but with work, good hits can be made and distance created.

The one thing I can see as an advantage to shooting while moving is that you're more likely to force the opponent to react, especially while advancing on them. In a hallway or narrow corridor I could see the need to elicit a duck or cower response from your opponent as you approach. The move-then-shoot technique is certainly valid though.

Awesome video but on the shooting while moving back I think the first way you showed for a CCW scenario is the better option. A great channel called Active self protection has coined a phrase "FIBS Factor" which stands for "Fudge I've been shot" or "Fudge I'm Being Shot At" Which almost always get a positive reaction from the threat. First to put shots on target 90% of the time wins the gun fight. In a more combat type scenario I could see the second approach working as it's more getting out of the kill zone and returning fire than self defense. Just a random youtubers opinion.

biggboysouth Reminds me of the "Four F's" my drill sergeant taught us. Find them, fix them (i.e. force them to take cover), flank them, finish them. Everything is situation-dependent, but there is value to lead flying toward bad guy to keep him stressed while you move.

I agree. Special Forces are trained that upon contact start shooting even if it isn't an aimed shot. There is a physiological reaction you have when being shot at that reduces the capability of responding. Reid, your demonstration is spot on if you are only considering your performance. But, you also have to be concerned about the action of the enemy. Put yourself in place of the enemy. If someone is firing at you, you'll have a reluctance to expose yourself to return fire. Time how long it took you to draw, move and get your first shot off. That is the amount of time the enemy has to put rounds in you. If you were that enemy, you would be able to draw and empty an entire magazine in that time.

The interesting question is whether it is better to get at least one good solid hit in them as soon as possible rather than later. Maybe the total number of shots in a certain span of time is the same, but hopefully the bad guy isn't using the first couple of seconds to shoot at us without the distraction of return fire coming his way. I saw a well-known instructor doing a multiple target demo recently with some pre-programmed targets that needed a certain number of hits before they would fall, and he stuck with each target until that number of hits had been made. Unfortunately, even though he seemed to think that was cool, the third target would have had enough time to empty their pistol at him if it had actually been real.

Jon at Active Self Protection calls that the FIBS factor; "F*$&, I've been shot." Getting that first shot on target as quickly as possible, more often than not, will help you win the fight.

Why only move forward or backward? Like you said in the video, you are not changing where the bad guy has to aim or shoot. I really like Suarez's shoot on the move philosophy, moving at angles to maximize how much the bad guy has to adjust aim.

Dude, what real world school of thought RE shooting on the move says directly at or away from the suspect? Aside from old SAS Direct Threat, I guess. This is generally a circumstance when a surprise gunfight pops up. If you have no immediate cover, and there is enough distance, you draw and fire while moving at an angle toward the target. From the suspects perspective you are still a laterally moving target, but getting closer and actively shooting. This is in the actual world, so you're having to avoid no-shoots and non-cover obstacles, but if you can shoot, you can shoot moving. And not the silly baby steps bs that no one being shot at will use, but really moving. Just my thoughts, and thanks for what you do, you rock!

I'm thinking I'd rather have hits on target faster than one extra hit on target total (referencing the first move/shoot). I have no proof, but am guessing that in a civilian shoot that the "bad guy" is more likely to stop being a threat with one or two rounds in him (as opposed to continuing to attack you until you stop running and start unleashing your smoke wagon). Anyone know of any studies on this situation? In all honesty, I'm also guessing you wont have someone standing still, or running straight at you as you run straight at them. So, if you are moving and they are moving, it appears easier to make hits standing still than moving. What's my conclusion. I need force on force training to get a better idea of the dynamics of a gun fight!

Turning your back and running gives your opponent time to fire multiple shots with no response from you. Additionally you have to turn, reacquire the threat, and then begin to engage the threat all while he is still shooting. Don’t think too many people would prefer that

I know it’s an old video this is only a humble question Reid. Would it be better to turn around and run from the threat at an angle then turn and shoot? I just want to train appropriately so I can practice bud. Or in your opinion would it be better to draw and shoot moving backwards? I have been practicing at moving backwards at an angle to keep the sights off me as much as possible. But I like your explanation on not knowing what might be behind me and tripping on something. I never really thought about that.

I watch Reid Henrichs video's and respect him and what he says although I will always remain a proud life member of the NRA. I have not forgotten the past 8 years that the NRA has fought obama and the media, The media actually blamed the NRA and its members for the acts of cowards. If it were not for the NRA leaning on our wishy washy republicans obama would have easily put back into effect the assault weapons ban and many others.
