The gen 1 M&P is one of my favorite pistols, especially when I reload, I slam the mag in and the slide automatically goes home. If it don't then it becomes a sling shot method but 99% of the time, the slide goes home automatically. Makes for really fast reload though I see it more likely to happen due to some sort of failure or faulty magazine.

Dropped a few mags on speed reloads during training cause it wasn't seated. When doing the tug, it isn't an extra step so much as pulling while moving your hand out of the way. Why bring the new magazine all the up the gun before ejecting the empty one? why not drop it while you are getting the spare? I'm not questioning Reid's technique I'm just trying to understand why. I'm sure there is a good reason
@charliefoxtrot50014 жыл бұрын
Because you should use the same procedure of reloading a gun for topping it off! Topping a gun off means to replace a partially spent magazine with a full one. Now, you don't want to eject the partially spent magazine before you know that you actually have a full one in the first place and before it is close to the gun. Ejecting a partially spent magazine means you convert your semi-auto handgun to a single-shot pistol until the full magazine is inserted. The idea is to keep that time as short as possible. Speed reloads are more important to practice than slide lock reloads. More likely to top a gun off than empty it.
@charliefoxtrot50014 жыл бұрын
What's the difference between reloading and topping off in terms of the practice drill?
@smcombs1004 жыл бұрын
@@charliefoxtrot5001 Set up for practicing the reload and implementing it. Sure, the physical movement is almost identical (minus the slide manipulation), but training yourself to reload the gun (or top the gun off, however you want to phrase it) on your terms rather than the gun's is different.
@smcombs1004 жыл бұрын
@Maine Jackal Solid argument. I can really tell you put some serious thought into this.
@charliefoxtrot50014 жыл бұрын
@@smcombs100 People use different terminology, but reloading typically means running a gun empty and the slide is locked back on those guns that do that. Topping off means having a round in the chamber and replace a partially spent magazine with a full magazine. Some people use the term "administrative reload" for topping off. Many trainers teach exactly the same procedure for both! You use the terms "slide lock reload", which I assume means reloading, and "speed reloads", which I assume means topping off. As Maine Jackal mentioned, you don’t know what you’re talking about. For many that have actually trained, there is no difference whatsoever in the procedure for both, as they run the slide no matter what. Topping off the gun on your terms is preferred, but you may not have much say about that. After all, you can't call a timeout in a gun fight to top off your gun. You top it off when you have the time to do it, hence it is NOT a "speed reload". Ever heard of the acronym FAST? It stands for Fight, Assess, Scan, Top-off! Saying that one is more important than the other is outright nonsensical! Running a gun empty when you are in a gun fight is bad and you should be able to remedy that as soon as possible. Topping off a gun during a pause or at the end of a gun fight may prevent you from running a gun empty when you are in a gun fight, so you should do that too.

@Reid Henrichs, I respect a lot of what you say and teach but you are a little off the mark in this video. I think that you are missing the main reason that you would do a reload. If you don't know how many rounds you are loading in your carry pistol you have very serious issues and should not be carrying. Back the first statement I made the main reason you would reload is to clear a malfunction not because you ran dry. Also way would ever look somewhere in a gunfight rhat you are not pointing your pistol? If you are looking to make sure there is no threat behind you, you need to bring the pistol with your eyes otherwise you are dead if there is a threat because you can't immediately respond to it.
@justinsmith46884 жыл бұрын
In order for any of this to mean anything to you, you need to come in with an open mind. Just because you know one thing and the instructor is teaching a different thing does not mean that either of you are wrong. Learn from as many instructors as you can, and apply what works for you. Also, the “load an unknown number of rounds” is for the drill; he is not saying you should carry like that.
@Predalien1954 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say the main reason you would need to do a reload is because of a malfunction and not because you ran dry. While yes, average statistics of civilian involved shootings is settled in 3-4 rounds average with many ending in just one. The percentage chance of a magazine failure in a weapon you have presumably tested to ensure it's reliability is probably about as high or low as being struck by lighting. However, you have to consider you dont know each individual situation and scenario. Places like Detroit, parts of Souther California, parts of Texas, and other areas are often known to get hit with multiple home invaders, 4-6 at a time. The potential you could run dry in that situation seems significantly higher. Particularly as we dont know the skill of the person using the gun. They may fire wildly and miss a lot thus wasting ammo. As for looking another direction without bringing the gun that direction... if there's an obvious threat in front of me and potential for one to be behind me, taking my eyes and gun off the threat that's in front may very well result in the same problem of being dead. At least if I take a quick glance and determine there's no threat behind me then I can easily return my eyes to the one that's obvious and in front of me with the gun still in that direction. But as Justin Smith said, learn from as many people as you can and apply what works for you.
@marktisdale79354 жыл бұрын
@Justin Smith there is a difference between a pistol running dry and the slide locking to the rear and a malfunction causing the pistol to stop running. So to train for a situation that is not going to happen is ridiculous. But training for a failure and getting to weapon back in the fight is useful. It is not the same to practice a reload after running dry then it is to practice reloading when you have a malfunction. The thought that they are the same is very dangerous.
@marktisdale79354 жыл бұрын

@justinsmith46884 жыл бұрын
Mark Tisdale if you are insinuating that Reid was not a gunfighter, you’re wrong. I’ll stand by my original comment though, there are things from many instructors that you should learn. If you don’t think this is one of them, then move on to another. To write Reid off because you think your guy is better isn’t productive. However, we should write off the glitz and glam “trainers” like “Instructor 0”, that don’t really train people, and only show off their staged tricks.
