Tudor historian here, who saw showtimes The Tudors when it first aired as a teenager and clearly, it had a massive influence on my life and pursuit within academia. That said,I think it’s far fetched to lump the Tudors in the same category as Reign! They couldn’t be more different…built for diff audiences, entirely diff costumes, diff time period, massive budget and acting talent difference. I get so irked when my fellow historians rip on TT as listen, it’s a tv series that needs a narrative that’s easy to follow for the layman, yet stimulating for the informed, and I feel in retrospect this series has not gotten the praise it deserves. Creator Michael Hirst was no dummy. He had to know the rules in order to break them and he did precisely that! There are a lot of (intentional) campy moments, yes,but there’s also some hyper focused historically accurate moments that are worth celebrating over its 4 seasons. A series like Reign didn’t even try, and that’s ok as it’s built for an entirely diff crowd… I see in some of the comments it also served as a gateway drug into the real history for some of you, as TT did for me many years ago and that’s fabulous! That’s the point of historical fiction. So I don’t clown either series, but they certainly aren’t at the same level either!

Interesting that you mention that the "bad" guys got more historical clothes. My interpretation had always been that the older/more mature the character was supposed to be the more they more historical aka conservative styles, which also kinda explained Mary's style change for me as she grew into her role as queen. Btw since you mentioned The Empress? Have you ever made a video about the Sisi craze and how different each drama dresses her? There were two series about a young Sisi in recent years (The Empress and Sisi (2021) aka Sisi: Austrian Empress) as well as two movies about an older Sisi with Corsage and Sisi & I. All have a very fictional take of her in my opinion and vastly different approaches to costuming.

I have a lot of cosplaying friends who will often make digs at Reign’s lack of costume accuracy, which I understand why, but then at the same time we’ll all gush about fantasy webtoons and anime with elaborate dresses and plots. I personally think two things can be true at the same time, and in this case, it was still a formative series that got many of us into historical dramas and it had some interesting plots while also acknowledging where its plot and costumes can still have their criticisms. I remember being into this series at a time when I was still just shy of being able to watch The Borgias and other mature series, so it fulfilled that for the while.

What made me annoyed was Mary Queen of Scots’ story is fascinating on its own and makes a good teen drama. While her captivity was long, her early life is FULL of intrigue. Its embellishment for the sake of making it the 16th century gossip girl was unnecessary; specifically her ladies in waiting - who were interesting IRL - and random brother Bash the magician. The Tudors had similar problems where Henry had two awesome sisters, but they merged them into one character. So many missed opportunities. Far prefer if they did a sexier version of Wolf Hall, where Anne Boleyn was so accurately played (by Claire Foy).

The life of Mary Queen of Scots has been a special interest of mine for a while so I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this show. I appreciate the show because it did make people more aware of who Mary was and her involvement with France and connection to the Medici family (another special interest of mine). That being said, I do wish they’d cast a French actress or at least someone who could do a reasonable French accent because, as you mentioned at 10:56, most depictions tend to give her a generic British accent or a Scottish accent.

You hit the nail on the head with the ending. I was never into the show; but, if (cishet) men can have anachronistic power fantasy dramas, why can't the girls and the gays? Also, it's funny to me, as a lesbian, that both Adelaide Keane and Caitlin Stasey eventually both came out as bi and pan respectively. And they both got their first big break on the Aussie soap Neighbours.

I´m divided. On one hand I love the costumes, even the modern ones.But on the other I also love historically accurate costumes. For me personally if it´s a show/movie about a real historical figure or event or if it´s clearly set in our world and history, then I prefer historically accurate costumes. But if it´s clearly set in a fantasy world, with fantasy world I mean NOT our world/planet, then they can do whatever they want with the costumes

Certainly it would be best to focus on Mary Queen of Scots’ early years. Her story ends badly: The Dauphin dies. She is forced to abdicate and imprisoned while her son (the OG King James I/VI) was raised Protestant. Finally, Mary QOS found out that Henry VIII’s other daughter QE (I) had only so much patience. Tutor court could be a dangerous place - just ask Anne B, Catherine Howard, …

I've been defending the costumes in reign for years now! I just think that as a teenager I loved the dresses. And the storyline was so inaccurate that for me it only added to the experience. Especially in the first season where they don't even pretend to be historical. Mary's huge coronation dress is just perfect for the scene I'll die in that hill. It also matches the styles and social standing of the girls. It fits the narrative. Reign is like the spiritual low budget predecessor to the great. (Also she was 15 in the show?? I had no idea)

@shainahiggins2217Ай бұрын
As a tall redhead myself, I remember feeling personally slighted when casting for this show was announced. But in my own professional acting experience I would learn that there is a very real aversion to using women who might be as tall or taller than their male castmates, especially if the character is young and/or meant to be the subject of romantic attention. Despite the world being filled with girls of above average height, a lot of directors don't think they read as believably feminine on stage/screen. It's tall lady erasure is what it is.

What gets me the most about historical fiction is that it dosent take a lot of money to make costumes that are at last reasonable on screen; if reenactors can do a thriftstore haul and get a decent camp set up than a primetime show can.

this show really is nostalgic to me and idk why.. i think it was game of thrones for me when i was 14 ( bc i watched got like two years ago when i was 19-20) so they have the same vibe to me even tho they aren’t really the same. I just feel huge nostalgia for this show and the time when i was watching it. somewhat sadness too. idk how to explain it. never watched s4 though. i think the cast met like this year or last year too and idk i think with cw shows yes they are bad but somehow that bond that it creates between fans coming to these panels and meeting them and talking with them and taking pictures and stuff. it’s just so beautiful and hopeful and somehow like a corner of home and magic for all of us. like i just love all of it. i wish i was there bc i watched the shows like tvd or to or teen wolf or reign maybe later like right abt the time they were almost finished so i wasn’t even on twitter or fandom. but still i got to be a part of something. anyway it makes me feel nostalgic and sad bc a part of me wants to go back again. to an introvert shy girl this world was everything. and i still rewatch tvd or watch reactions to it. anywayss i was a lola fan bc i didnt know better and now i get why they would hate her. but the francis actor had chemistry with anne popplewell and still has a little crush on her in my opinion. not to get my shipping actors for controversial ships goggles on. when i first watched got i was a sansa and jonsa fan so yeah i get why

Reign was MY SHOW in my last two years of high school, but I completely dropped off after season 2. I think I remember vaguely hearing about constant character deaths in later seasons, and once I knew they were introducing Elizabeth, my knowledge of real world history got too much in the way and I didn’t want to watch all my friends get killed off. In my heart, reign ended after s2, and honestly this recap only reinforces that! They killed Lola!???? Lola was always my favourite, I started watching the show for Anna Popplewell because I loved her in Narnia. From the costume perspective I agree 100% with everything you said, and also that it was SUCH a time capsule of 2013/14 fashion. Honestly like, reign was probably what got me interested properly for the first time in costume design, and I’ve gone on to study it and had t actually connected that reign was one of the first shows I got suuuper into the costuming of. I think historical accuracy has a place in storytelling, but it doesn’t have to be accurate in order to be inspiring! And inspiring and fun and melodramatic was the point, it was a show for teenagers and I love that it just. Was a show for teenagers. I’ll always have a soft spot for it, but I’m not watching s3 or 4 hahah

You're made of stronger stuff than me, I tried three times to get through Reign - The first when it originally aired, and twice in subsequent years with adjusted expectations - and I rage quit every one of them before the midway point of season one. I liked The Tudors, but I felt like they did a better job of meshing the real (and already very dramatic) story with TV plot invention. I never understood why Reign bothered to even pretend to be based on anything remotely historical; they seemingly had no interest in any of it. I always said they shoild have taken their Gossip Girl at the Ren Faire aesthetic, and fully invented a country and set of characters. I think I maybe could have stomached something like that better than the "History Fanfiction" they did instead.

Letting Mary die might have actually been the kinder thing to do. She was probably suffering and slightly mad at that point, and keeping her imprisoned for another twenty years would be another form of cruelty.
