don't worry, I was rejected from Sheridan last year and went to Algonquin College instead, which is an insanely good animation program and I'm glad i didn't manage to get into sheridan. I have people in my class and in upper years that have transferred from the Sheridan animation or pre-an program and absolutely HATED Sheridan because of how cut throat the environment is. the classroom is more like a competition which means a friendly environment is hard to get, and you NEED those connections in college. I've heard Sheridan is not the best for getting connections in the industry, at least not ones that will last

@@vonyoki2679 industry day will be a scary but a good opportunity to get your foot in the door. My film got the attention of Mercury Filmworks and Blue sky studios (it was over 10 years ago!), but I decided to journey into the medical route. I hear the animation industry can be rough. But what I see from past classmates is if you have passion and don't give up, you'll get there. Don't get discouraged if your film doesn't get attention during Industry day. Your passion and love of drawing will eventually get your foot in the door. Sadly, I do hear that the industry is yet going through another rough time. This was something that was kind of forced for me, but natural for you :) Animators are also so fun to be with, I miss that so much. Don't give up!

There are a couple of things I noticed in your art that could help a lot in terms of perspective. At the picture in 3:30 notice how the right leg has a nice 3/4 perspective and the bottom of the shorts outline curves outward. However, we are seeing the inside of his left legs shorts even though his leg is pointed away from us. Instead of making the line curve outwards you made it curve inwards causing a wierd perspective where the leg could be going either direction. If you cover up below the knee the leg points backwards, but if you cover the shorts it goes forward. The legs and arms can be thought of as a cylinder. The same thing can happen if you dont overlap specific lines/parts on the body a certain way, in some cases refraining from putting in overlap, or even adding the smallest amount of overlap. If you are making an object or character do actions that people or animals do, record yourself or another person doing something similar or look up reference. It helps you figure the timing of the action and what would need to happen in order for that action to work. Like in the case of the sponge/juicebox falling after the land, it landed and rose up perfectly and then fell super quick vs if it landed leaning off balance and then fell slow in the beginning and started to pick up speed toward the bottom of the fall. I think what you have right now is good in terms of your line quality, ideas and skill, its just a couple of little things in perspective you have to figure out. I would also suggest looking at LoveLifeDrawing's video 7 Tools to give weight to your figures.

@@vonyoki2679 I struggle with rotation as well but what I've noticed is that if I just use a random 3D movable body and move it around, until it looks like the position that I am drawing I can get the proportions correct way better! Yo I think you did pretty well tbh. Most porto I've seen on yt scored low on storyboard so it's really amazing you scored close to perfect. Tho I gotta admit the expectations have been growing rapidly (about 5% from last year's). I think they're especially picky when it comes to animation. I saw one high-scoring Sheridan attempter from 2022/2020 and their animation (15/15) was smooth af so I think that's a very important factor in grading. But again, there have been so many talented attempters it's lowkey scary. An 85% porto mentioned having doors and windows for perspective drawings to enhance the proportion so I think you did well on that

yeahh can always try again after rejection! I’m rlly happy to hear that my video reminded u that. Actually, when I was going through the application process, I learned that I couldn’t go to my dream schools: either art school or a school known for their animation. My parents rejected the idea and I was bummed out. I was rlly afraid that I wouldn’t make it as an animator if I didn’t go into one of those schools. Almost gave up on this portfolio, but grinded it at the end. Even though it’s not to standard and I knew I wouldn’t be able to go, I’ve learned a lot during this time period, and I’m happy I tried. Also schools can be rlly important and helpful but it’s not everything. Remember that rejection isn’t failing. I’ll keep going and I hope you do too. Best wishes

If I had to give advice I think you would really benefit from looking up line of action and try to start out with extreme poses and then add details, build on top of it. Avoid copying photographic reference and directly drawing silhouettes/outlines because this can cause the drawing to become/look somewhat stiff. As for animation you probably already looked up the 12 principles but just incase I think the 2 most noticeably missing here were the lack of secondary motion and a bit of clumsy spacing and timing which cause an unclear end point. Overall I think there's plenty of potential already there. And I know for sure I'm still relearning/struggling the basics even after already finishing my animation degree it's so much easier said then done after all. We all strife for improvement but no ones road is paved exactly the same.

Wow 79 is great for first time applying. Im applying for next year so im no expert but i bet you couldve scored like 1 point higher if you submitted the second pass of your hand drawings instead of the digital one. I know 8 out lf 10 is still good but i heard they prefer traditional and your traditional version was very good. I could be wrong aswel but for the shorter life drawings i feel like you focused too much on structure and outside lines. For short they want very gestural lines (im explaining it terribly but proko has good videos on this). I know your figure and hands got pretty good marks anyway but these are just little things i noticed. Also the sponge as reference is the best idea ive ever seen Edit: i thought your adobe scan of hands was a digital pass, ignore my comment about ur hands🫡🫡🫡

@vonyoki26797 ай бұрын
For the storyboard for Sheridan, they gave us a prompt and a simple character sheet of the Possum. Then you create a story and draw four pictures to tell that story. Last year’s prompt was “Better Safe then Sorry”. My version of the story is that since the possum didn’t wear any protection, the experiment exploded on him causing burns. I made another character wearing all the protection to convey “Better safe then sorry” because they didn’t get any burns and were safe.

I guess the figures they set a time because they wanted a short pose and a long pose, so around 2 min to twenty. The rest, didn’t really matter. I spent months on one thing. The other art school i applied was Ringling, they didn’t set a time either. If you have more questions, feel free to ask!

To be honest, you have a room to improve. But the potential is noticeable

Got to say I love how many fat people you draw. Body diversity isn't something I see often w a lot of artists, so its nice to see how you do it and do it so well

Ur vid got spawned in my recomations Here are some suggestions to get better :) (im not in a better/professionell Position, buuut im really good at spotting mistakes etc, so dont take it Personal pls i just want to help) Soo hands first, cz i love to draw hands 😅 Ur hands have both the same, let call it tension? Look u can see that this hand holds the dart in a loose position (but stiff linework), and the release looks nearly the same! If i pinch my finfers together u could see some more "tension" espasially in the linework, can u draw a hand which express the tension and the release a bit better? -not by pose but with the linework /detail/feeling If u know what i mean.. I think the problem there is that one can see that u painted those 2 hands from a picture. Using pictures as refference is Important, but the clean way ur lines look is coused cz u focused too mutch on the positioning etc rsther than linework. Try drawing it by looking at ur real hand, nit at the foto 😊 Rotating character, U made it urself easy with this type of character, which characters are a harder challange when u rotate them? Try to draw smthing like a truck or in ur room and than spin it in your Imagination, with this u train ur brain to think more 3d and in Perspective! U will see, the first ones are crap but after a while its a nobrainer Short Animation I really really like your approich, buut Animations are a lot about tension in movement. Which frames are the keyframes you would need for an animation? You gave each position the same amount of screentime, which is not needed, try the 12laws of animation 4 yourself and check where its whacky. One last thing i noticed in your coloured picsss Okay, u use the same brush for everything try t, and your character are shaded differently and have outlines but the background is more blurred/ with twice the amount of colours AND theyre all in the same hue! Turn ur colored ones in black/white and you will see that the darks/mids/light tines are all really close in the same hue range and have nearly no contrast :o, colours are damn hard but u dont need the whole pallet, maybe limit yourself more so you dont get overwhelmed with choosing the right colors The characters look like an point n click advanture (this is just some thing i noticed) cz the characters are made differently than the background its good/bad in the same time depending what you wanted Lastly, i can see why u scored so high with your personal pages! ❤ Theyre a blast! Whyy? Cz u allow yourself to let ur line speak! I can see where u had fun and you had a good chill day! I love the cars on the first slide, they have character! The second slide is just awesome! Filled with so, much -your strength is eslacially fast drawings which Catch the moment, the linework on those is far batter than the ones where you "try to much" /"tension up" The lines are spot on! Love it! Draw more from real life and memory than i pad, u can really spot the difference cz the ipad delets your own handwriting :). ❤ Loved your video, youre an a really really good way ad i liked your honest aplroach Thank you from a drunk guy who goas sleelin now

What you said about the hands is interesting! For the character rotation, I want to add : - I think the choice of character is good, it's not too simple nor too complicated, and I like the design - the front view is perfect, in my opinion it's the sideway one that probably got you wrong, because it feels as if the weight repartition of the character isn't above its feet. I don't know if I'm clear, but it feels like if he is ready to fall backwards. I think this comes from the fact that you rotated the character around its heels while the weight should also be supported by the sole of the foot. Which means that either the body mass should have been more forward, or the feet should have been more back so that the rotation point was in the middle of the foot. - the details like the face and hair is really good, though the hand seems a bit to similar between two of the poses I hope it can help you! Still, don't take my opinion for granted, because I never took any art classes and only ever animated one character rotation in my life for fun so I'm far from being an expert :) Good luck in your art journey! ❤

Yikes, American and Canadian art colleges have such high standards compared to the art college I'm going to. I got 578 points out of 600 on my portfolio and I am nowhere near as talented as you are. I really do hope you end up getting in tho!

It depends on the college, some colleges don’t even ask for a portfolio. Nevertheless, Congratulations on your acceptance!! Thanks for the compliment

Hi there! I’m a Sheridan Animation Graduate who is currently tutoring hopefuls. I’m working on a video as a free resource to help those specifically applying to the program, I’m on the look out for both accepted and rejected portfolios to use as examples with feedback and I was wondering if you’d be okay with having me include some of your work?
@vonyoki26792 ай бұрын
That’s really cool that you are tutoring hopefuls!!! I don’t mind if you use my work. When you make your video, let me know! I would like to watch it!

It's very confusing why animation schools exist if they already expect you to be a professional to be accepted. Crazy how much of a scam pursuing art really is. Its not like people who work in the industry have to draw to disney feature film quality anymore since everything is a pre made rig or get stuck doing 3d animation anyway. And every character follow the same bag of interchangable amatuer animation tricks.
@elizabeth4689 Жыл бұрын
I don't get why your character rotation scored so low, it's definitely not the worse character design I've seen
