I know this is an old video but... In hot desert areas we are very aware that "light makes heat" and we keep the lights off as much as possible and often have very few lights in a room. Because we don't want to add to the heat of a house that is already so very very HOT. So it is possible they purposely left off lights. We actually have more lights outside than in our living room.

I am from Egypt, sadly from Cairo so I didn't see this kind of architecture up until I visited the south of Egypt (Luxor and Aswan), where the architecture kind of resembles the architecture in Sudan (because Sudan and Egypt were one country at some point in history). Up in the north the architecture is entirely different. Alexandria for example looks a lot like Athens because it's a "Greek" city named after Alexander the Greatest and built by the ancient Greeks. In Cairo every neighborhood has different architectural styles, city plan, etc. I grew up in the British district built for British soldiers back then when we were colonized by them and is full of mid-century modern and art deco buildings. The downtown area is Parisian because it was built by the French people. The neighborhood where my mum grew up was built by a Belgium billionaire so the architecture there resembles the "luxury" apartment buildings from his hometown. Giza, where the pyramids are, are basically huge blocks of practical, yet ugly, buildings because it was made for the huge amount of farmers who moved to the city and needed accommodation. Another part is ottomanian so they have a specific style of windows where you can look out on the street but no one on the street can look in, they don't have back gardens/only courtyards so no one would peak on the women inside because the ottomans were way too religious and traditional. I can go off and write an entire essay about the architectural styles in Egypt but in conclusion they combined the pyramids of Giza in the north of Egypt with the architectural style in the south of Egypt. And yes, we have pigeons in Egypt. In my mum's apartment she adds bird feed in their food bowls every morning by every window and balcony and they like to hangout there till the evening. I can guarantee you, they are real pigeons and not the conspiracy theory digital pigeons that spy on us all 😂

Thank you omar, I read the whole thing and this was very informative. I know the vague history of Egypt, but this brings it all into perspective. So many styles and historical influences. Also I could see from the map that Egypt is such a large country so of course there are going to be differences place-to-place. Maybe it’s good that EA included a couple Egyptian regions/styles mixed together, personally I like the practical “sand cube” style of the EA houses, I would have been upset with certain styles if it threw off cohesion... especially Parisian since we just looked at France haha

That's so fascinating!! I never knew different parts of Egypt were ruled by different countries like the rest of Africa, but now it seems obvious. I'm sadly only familiar with the stereotypical architecture, so seeing French style houses in the middle of the desert would throw me off so much.
