Agree. People who disdain quartz are the same people who prefer film cameras, vinyl records and printed books. Those have all been eclipsed by superior technology, but they still hold sentimental and artistic value. Which is fine for those people, but I much prefer the accuracy, durability and cost-effectiveness of quartz. And solar-powered quartz is the ultimate.
@P_Ezi Жыл бұрын
@@richreecer2552Non-solar quartz has been eclipsed by solar power. I disdain buying batteries and keeping up with watches needing batteries replaced. If one has more than about three watches, it becomes a nuisance. If you are keeping up with batteries for your whole family, it is even worse. As someone who never wanted quartz watches, I must admit that there are now many very desirable solar quartz options available. These Oceanus models are beautifully made, very practical, and affordable. Solar tech has removed one of my main dislikes of quartz: battery life. Many quartz watches do not have any indication when the battery is nearly exhausted and I would wonder if the battery would die while away from home. Solar tech has largely removed that fear along with regular required changes. Solar cells do also die, but the intervals are typically VERY long. Having that fear removed, and seeing such well-made watches like this has changed my opinion of quartz. I am definitely considering this very handsome and high value watch.

The Oceanus line watches are hand finished with the Sallaz machine which is the the same machine responsible for what GS calls Zaratzu. They come from the same factory. There are only a few people in the world that are skilled enough to use this machine. Mtgs and MRGs have the same finish as well. If this was advertised the watches would have to be sold for a lot more $.

Japanese watch company marketing is flat-out bewildering even by the standards of the country. Source: have lived in Japan for 6.5 years.
@nikitaandriyashin73433 жыл бұрын
Zaratsu is just the Japanese pronounciation of Sallaz: Z for S, L and R are notoriously confused by the Japanese, Koreans and prob some other nations in the region, then TS for Z and giving it a mandatory vowel at the end, an U. So obviously it's the same technique, executed to a different level perhaps, but still same. With so much emphasis put on the Zaratsu by Seiko, I'm amazed that what appears to be an old tradition rooted in whatever history (the image they'd like to convey), turns out to be just a Japanese way to pronounce the brand name of the equipment they once procured. Like, imagine some Japanese clothing manufacturer of the late 19th cent. would tell, these items were made using Zingelu technique instead of mentioning the Singer sewing machines. A bit pathetic if you ask me.

I, too, consider the Oceanus to be probably the best watch made. It is well-made, and the functionality is outstanding. It is beautiful, accurate, always correct and reliable. Exceptionally reliable. Exceptionally accurate. Exceptionally beautiful. Exceptionally functional. What watch out there can best the Oceanus? I cannot think of one. I wear a Casio G-Shock GA-1000 A1 and this watch is incredible. Accurate to within ~2 seconds PER YEAR, compass, thermometer, multi time zones, waterproof to 300 feet, drop-proof onto concrete from several feet (I forget), mineral crystal (right for this watch) . I have worn it for three years straight - mountaineering, skiing, swimming, shooting, motorcycling, sleeping, chopping trees down, mountain biking and more. I never remove it except to clean it and to change the batteries (2 batteries - every other year). I tried mechanicals and love the machine work, but hated the built-in inaccuracy of mechanical watches. Plus, mechas are weak. Drop one on the floor off your kitchen counter. Go ahead. Fragile. Quartz is the way to go, and quartz solar is killer. Make it as rugged as the G-Shock and you have the perfect watch. Casio? Rolex killer.

It's nice to see in-depth reviews of quartz watches, especially when they are as gorgeous as this one. I watched a promotional video that outlined the functions of the Oceanus line and they are quite impressive. You are right about the CASIO name on the dial. Oceanus is a great name for the watch, but as soon as I see the prominent CASIO, a whole other image pops into my head. I am not a watch snob, but for a watch that costs over $600 Canadian, that cheap beater watch image sits in the back of your mind and makes you think you should not be paying that much for a CASIO. Then again, some of the G-Shocks are ridiculously priced.

Awesome review. I haven't had a "dressy" watch in over a decade, and I decided I needed at least one for my wardrobe. (I've always been more of a G-Shock guy.) I picked up the S100 a couple of weeks ago, and I was so thoroughly impressed that I splurged on an OCWS6000-1A for $1,800 from Casio's US website. I could have gotten it cheaper from overseas, but I wanted peace of mind with the warranty. I really love the way it looks. Lume could be better. As I mentioned, it's been a decade since I had a dressy watch, and the last one I had was a fancy automatic. I hated how inaccurate it was and the maintenance and upkeep. I prefer my devices work for me, not the other way around. Casio's Oceanus line makes me happy because it is so high-quality, reasonably priced, and has all the set-it-and-forget-it convenience you could ask for from a quartz movement. The Oceanus fills a gap that too many manufacturers neglect.

I have one of these. Mine is the grey model -- I guess it's a little harder to come by -- I think the letters end with "-AJR". I chose that color thinking it would be the most suitable for different clothes. It's crazy crazy accurate, but I feel it could be improved. The lume absolutely sucks and reading it in the dark really is not possible. The second hand is way too slender and very difficult to make out. The calendar window is microscopically small. One thing that is really good though is, Casio has clearly figured out how to make the second hand hit the markers _exactly_. I don't know why other quartz watch makers can't seem to achieve that.

That's a good question, and honestly I'm just guessing here. It's rated at 100m, and Casio has a track record of knowing what they are doing. Especially when you look at the G-shock line. Agreed. One of the very best quartz watches. But the case work and polishing ... I think, is totally Grand Seiko level. 🤔
@deanwaller82836 ай бұрын
FYI the snap on caseback is deliberate,they havent even put a notch on it so you can remove it,its done so that when it IS time to change the battery you have to send it back to casio so THEY can do it...these watches are built in sealed clean rooms,they dont want anyone but them messing around inside the watch.

As there is a button, why can't it have a chronograph function using the 3 hands. Surely is just a bit of chip programming for Casio
@RelativeTime3 жыл бұрын
I think most of the other Oceanus are chronos. So for this one they were going for a simpler 3 hander.

Hi Shane great channel! What are you wearing on left wrist during intro and wrap-up outro? I am getting back into analog watches and love your reviews but couldn't ID that one. I am a CASIO G and Protrek collector so excited to see the Oceanus review! Keep up the amazing work.

If I remember right, it's a Marine Master homage from uni-dive. I showed it off in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKuwlaujlLJgrLc

So was I. Although it probably won't have to be opened up for about 15-20 years.

Looks nice, although a tad large for a sports watch. Imported from japan to the UK the total cost is about £420, which is a lot for a quartz watch. I could but a quartz Tissot Gentleman for considerably less, and really can't see the Casio being better. Great video as usual
@jterranova3 жыл бұрын
It’s better. Worth the price. Finish is amazing. Global signal and good phone app for backup sync.
@johnholkham24203 жыл бұрын
Sorry to Tissot has a cheap $5 movement , the Casio movement is 100 times better, not all quartz movement are equal. The Casio has Radio control, Solar battery, hand Alignment plus many other features such as hitting the second markers at ever marker.
@watchalot9193 жыл бұрын
@@johnholkham2420 Tissot use ETA quartz movements, hardly cheap. Open the back up of a watch with an ETA movement, then look what is in the back of a Casio

@@watchalot919and that ETA is made to be disposable,it's not been meant to be serviced. I'll take the Casio all day every day.

This watch for me is perfect,and i realy mean that.You forgot to mention that the second hand hits perfectly.The price is almpst 50% more.I think that only brings cofidence to buy it. Hoewer i have only one problem and tha's the claimed 100m of water resistance.Would you have confidence to go and swim in the pool with this one? I mean can you surface swim with it?After all it's Oceanus wright?Otherwise i've enjoed watching this review as always.Keep moving forward

I'd confidently go scuba diving with this watch,when Casio say 100 mtrs they MEAN 100 mtrs

The whole line is awesome, so frustrating that it's not easy to get hold of in the UK. Hopefully at some point the world settles down again so I can consider ordering from the other side of the globe.

When i first started this "watching" hobby, i didn't even wanna look at Casios 😅😅, because i thought there's nothing cool about quartz and digital watches. But since i introduced myself to Casio A1000 Vintage series, my whole perspective towards this 'watching' hobby changes. I started to appreciate watchmakers hard works to create high quality watches, regardless of how those watches are powered. Only recently I found out that these premium (Oceanus) Casio series does exist 😅😅, and i started to appreciate them, and this review just confirmed that i am actually going to get one of these into my collection. Great review as always Shane! Keep them coming.

i started with automatics and now only look for quartz/solar. Automatics aborb too much money for service and time for setting it up, plus they are inaccurate. But i'm wearing a watch mostly for functionality not for pristige
@jimipane20133 жыл бұрын
@@wojciech5177 Exactly! Just like what Shane said in the review "I don't wear a watch to impress other people. I wear it because i like it" 😁😁😁. I wear watches that make me feel good wearing them 😁

The only issue I can foresee is the lack of a guarantee for these JDM watches ie if something went wrong what would be the best thing to do? It's also a minor issue the fact that you can't buy the oceanus outside of Japan as it's straight forward to obtain one through Ebay or similar.
@RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
That is always a question with some JDMs. There's an issue, most local watchmakers should be able to fix a Seiko JDM. Get something like Casio, or orient. That may be more difficult. Although I have heard of people sending their watch all the way back to Japan, and orient happily repairing or servicing them. Supposedly it wasn't bad price-wise.
@deanwaller82839 ай бұрын
@@RelativeTime No different to sending a Rolex off to Switzerland for repair I guess.
@danielmercado90352 жыл бұрын
I love the watch and the Oceanus line is very good. Casio on the dial may be a deterrent for some, however the JDM exclusivity may make up for it. You can't buy this in your local US mall.
@johno45213 жыл бұрын
For this price I would want some kind of after sales service. What happens a few years down the line when it needs a new capacitor and my country's Casio dealer won't touch it cos it's JDM,....
@deanwaller828310 ай бұрын
Try 15-20 years before that happens,and if you must?send it to Japan for a service
