I used to be a scuba instructor. I'm getting one of these. Divers dive with dive computers. They are ugly and when you get out you soak it in fresh water and put it away. I wouldn't trust my life to a watch. Nobody goes down 100 just on air. You get nitrogen narcocis around 60 and you are risking O2 tox further down. If it's fine for swimming, it's fine. I love this thing because it reflects that I used to dive but life moves on and this is a practical, beautiful watch.

Wonderful review, mesmerizing voiceover and awesome photography as always. On that crown issue: I don't need it signed because I'm already sure it's a Seiko by looking at the dial. I also don't need it screw down because I can easily wind and adjust it that way and there is no point of failure or wear like a thread. I like it exactly as it is - just like the rest of the watch - instant classic! I also don't understand how people consider this a downgraded SKX since it has nothing in common with it except the basic case shape and the dial layout. To me it is a far better everyday watch in every regard.

Recently picked up one of these on a local second hand web board not knowing much more about it other than it being a late model seiko for a ridiculous steal. With that said, I searched it out online and came across your video review. The previous owner said it was a srpe51 and you mention yours being an srpe61. This one came on a 2 piece leather strap, a seiko branded oyster style bracelet, and a throw-in nylon nato. Seems like the only difference between a 51 and a 61 is the watch's band if I'm not mistaken. The specs you mention are identical to this one and like you also mentioned, the accuracy was atrocious at a -26 seconds and a beat error of 3.3 before I was able to 'trial and error' regulate it to an acceptable 0.2 beat error @ + 4 seconds with a phone app. It seems to have settled in at between +3 to +6 seconds against my phone's clock wearing it over the past couple weeks so I'm satisfied with it now. The crystal's clean and a thorough cleaning of its backside around the gasket made it look presentable. The seller asked $75 mentioning how it wasn't very accurate and we settled on 60 bucks. I installed the bracelet and 2 new spring bars. Not sure if I'm going to keep it or flip it but as entry level seikos go, it's not too bad now.
@RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
I think the other difference between the 51 and 61 is the bezel. If I'm remembering right the 51 has a polished bezel, while the 61 is brushed. But overall minor differences. $60 is a fantastic price for it! Eventually, I put this one on a strap code jubilee. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6e9o2WdrtyHlck
@a.delome80232 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime Good info Shane and thanks very much for the reply. Your insight confirms that the one I bought is the 51 as it does indeed have the polished bezel and did come with the Seiko branded bracelet even though the leather 2 piece I mentioned is what came installed. I doubt I'll invest in another bracelet as this one suits the purpose fine and I'm looking to satisfy other endeavors at the moment so will hold off on upgrading it. I wasn't on the hunt for this one to begin with and only bought it for the price and the challenge of regulating it myself, so both urges were satisfied. It's a nice 'everyday' for the time being though. Thanks again for your insight, good luck to you, and take care.

Of course the sapphire will be more scratch resistant, but are you talking about a domed piece of sapphire? Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it to "pop" more than what already comes with the watch. I'm not a bracelet guy myself. When Pete takes it to the jeweler to have it sized, I'll have him make sure the jeweler checks the spring bars. He's a gold tone watch kinda guy and likes bracelets. Nice review. That dial is really nice, a great alternative to black without straying to far. It’s a nice enough watch. However, with Seiko, certain boxes that would be checked with microbrands are not checked here. No sapphire, unsigned crown. Since it not a diver, 100m wr and a pullout crown are ok. With those large crown guards this crown is very well protected. Personally, I’m really not into these newer Seiko 5s, Im not a fan of what they did. Just my opinion, I would go for a Turtle and spend a little more, I like the ET Bezel. I have heard this series being called the “Solid Boy”, I guess in reference to it’s fixed Bezel.
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
A few people have mentioned the "Solid Boy", which is evidently what they are calling them in Japan. Hard to go wrong with a turtle. The one thing I'm really glad they did with this one was reduce the thickness. Which gives it a better feel. I think that was one of my bigger issues with the 42mm 5kx. It's about the same as the SKX, yet it's not a real diver. So not much point.

@@RelativeTime I've never really seen too many watch makers do a purple dial. Which I think is really disappointing, since it'd be such a versatile colour and in some situations could really stand out, especially if it's a sunburst dial.
@ColinLack4 жыл бұрын
@@dparis2172 Great nickname for it in a purple colourway.
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
Thats an Awesome name. So far the only purple dial watches I've seen are from Aragon and the purple version of the Irukandji from MAS. Which I told the brand owner it reminded me of Samuel L Jackson's lightsaber in star wars.

Hey Saen, Thanks for reviewing this watch. I really like it, and as you mentioned the gray dial is a killer. Today's price on Amazon is $220. Feb.13.2021 Keep up the great job. ps, I like the Dress KX.

Mine has "made in japan" as well. Nice bonus. Also, I like the unsigned crown. It would be cool to have the presage type "S" crown, but I really really like the fine radial brushing on the crown end. It looks great, better than polished. Thanks for another awesome review! Also, I got the same gray dial but on a bracelet. The bezel is polished with the brushing in the middle, the opposite of the bezel on yours. Kinda wish I got the brushed, but I really wanted the bracelet. Even though it's folded steel, hollow end links and pressed clasp, it looks great & is super comfortable.

Crazy?! Mine does not have ”made in japan” on the dial...maybe a different lot of production? My first automatic and love the watch 💚

have the other gray one (67K1) with the brushed case face/bezel instead of mirror finish and I think it's even slightly dressier. It's become my everyday watch (fighting for the spot with the Orient Kamasu which I also love to wear on a regular basis). Not sure if I'll also get a compass-less Alpinist (that should get released in a couple of weeks) as it's probably going to feel very similar to this

Nice review, as it happens I really quite like this watch, it reminds me of the older Sports 100 Series (of which I still have mine from 1982 and its still running). I like the faces of divers but don't normally need the timer bezel (strangely few seem to know how to use them properly anyway). Its classy and elegant. I'll be buying one when the prices go a little lower.

I own one, and love in more than the higher end models in my collection.

I like them, but for the price you're in sapphire territory. And the lack of the screw-down crown of course. But you did it right, went more to the dress side and less diver/ sports watch. Great review as always. Thanks!

Price is the biggest issue, not exactly a value proposition at full retail. But if they get closer to $200 later on it's a different story.

The Chinese are probably already offering watches almost identical to this Seiko 5 with a Seiko movement, sapphire crystal, screw down signed crown and a better strap for substantially less...
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
@@23727bgk I've looked at plenty of Aliexpress watches, so far I haven't seen anything quite like this. Don't get me wrong, there are some great Chinese watches that you can pick up for a bargain. In fact, I' have a few videos coming with some, but one of the things they don't do well is casual. Most of the watches on Aliexpress are either Diver homages or Dress watches. Not too many that I'd classify as casual or as a sports watch. Although if these get popular enough I'm sure someone will put one out.

The japanese version says „Made in Japan“, its reference number is SBSA051. I like the looks a lot, especially with a light brown leather strap.

Good to know. When I put this out I was trying to find if there was a JDM version, but as they were still a little new couldn't find much.

Fantastic genre-crossing redesign that does a whole lot more right than wrong. Very happy with my SRPE53 in blue sunburst. Loving it on a shark mesh. Also had the SRPE57 “gilt” black with gold but it wasn’t quite as versatile and lacked a sunburst effect. Looks like a 61 may be in my future... :)

Seiko has a real winner here. If the price dips below $200, as most Seiko 5 do, it's going to be one helluva deal. If I didn't already own a sarb033, I'd likely buy this particular model. I have no idea why someone would want a screw-down crown on this watch. Beside it being another potential point of failure, it is also an unnecessary inconvenience every time you want to wind the watch, and/or set the time and date. I agree, the Vario cordura strap looks great with this watch! Excellent review!

Totally different feel from the SARB, I own both and couldn’t be happier. 👌🏽
@dparis21724 жыл бұрын
@@jessemartinez6120 Understood. I'd be happy to have both watches in my collection. But considering my particular priorities at this point, another dark dialed, Seiko powered watch would be redundant and I'm looking to stretch for something in a slightly higher bracket, with a lighter dial. If in a year's time this watch is available at a lower price, I'd definitely consider getting one.

I finally got the opportunity to try one on recently and I am very impressed. So much so, that I have shifted my priorities from acquiring a couple of higher priced micros, to making a SRPE my next watch purchase. I feel dumb for spending $500 on a Lorier Falcon when this watch is half the price and twice as nice on the wrist.

It is surprisingly good. I still haven't seen any bracelets from Strapcode, but Marc (long Island) now has domed sapphire for them. Been debating if I should put one in, or wait until the hardlex gets scratched up first.
@dparis21724 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime I was surprised that I wasn't hating on the bracelet when I tried it on, but then again, I'm not as spoiled with straps as others might be. 😉 As far as the crystal, why not just wait until when/if it's needed? While I like the scratch-resistant confidence of sapphire, I actually don't mind hardlex/mineral (or even acrylic, for that matter). I think it is generally clearer than sapphire, it attracts less smudges and cleans up easier, too. Or maybe I'm crazier than a bag of cats...

I think the 'DressKX' nickname is well suited for this line of watches. It pays tribute to the fact that this watch after all is a derivatative of the 5KX, albeit a good one. It's catchy and it'll probably become universal among watch collectors.
