Things I missed - Rainbow Shell is more accurately the ability in the Final Smash. Though I'm not technically wrong in saying it's the blue and red shell abilities, the ability to use them all together was a byproduct of the rainbow shell, a yellow shell a koopa jumps in that homes onto Mario. Eating that gives wings, fire and the stomp - Back air changed from 64 to Melee. It was a back kick like Mario's, now it's a tail wiggle. I'll add more if you smarty pants' have more to correct me on! Have a good day!

While in the "Super Dragon" form, Yoshi also has a hitbox on his body so if you touch the opponent it deals damage and knockback... that's most likely where the yellow ability ties in, since its kinda like the stomp except its in the air at all times.

20 people probably already took note of this, but in Mario World, Yoshi gets all special shell abilities at once if you happen to eat a Rainbow Shell, which happens whenever a Yellow Koopa hops into any shell. Kind of funny, considering the Smash Ball is all rainbow-y too

In Super Mario World when the yellow Koopa goes back in it's shell it goes all crazy rainbow colors. If Yoshi eats it he gets all 3 abilities. His Final Smash is actually based of the rainbow shell.

Sue me, but 64 Yoshi will always be a favorite. Things like his up-tilt, his double-jump armor eating multi-hit moves, his ability to double-jump cancel with aerials, and the sheer fun and speed of his silly shield breaks make him so much fun for me. Smash 4 does improve lots of his kit, but I can't help my nostalgia for the old kit.

I just realized, 64/Melee Yoshi was actually based off SMW Yoshi for the most part, but Brawl gave him changes that ressembles Yoshi's Island's Yoshi (including a standing anim that's actually closer to that than it is to SMW Yoshi), and Sm4sh... basically turned it into Mario spinoffs Yoshi which is the depiction that makes perfect sense across ALL of Yoshi's appearances especially in newer titles.

I'm sort of surprised you didn't even mention, even offhandedly, double jump invincibility, parrying, or the fact that he can't jump out of his shield. I know there probably a link between those mechanics and his games (is yoshi's flutter jump invincible in any of his games? Idk), but they're his most defining traits from smash 64, melee, and PM and are what made him one of the wackiest and most unique characters in the game. Also in terms of which yoshi is the most definitive, I guess it depends on which games you're coming from. While yoshi's upright stance is common in most of his more recent games, you can't really fault melee/64 for going with the original, super mario world look.

You are right, Sakurai writes about that stuff and I thought about mentioning it but when it comes to writing these videos I have to choose a direction for the topic to flow and sometimes a certain thing doesn't fit the theme. This was more a casual approach to the character instead of a competetive and in depth one like that. The invincibility on the double jump was added as to make Yoshi able to recover with his double jump without being knocked out of it.The jump isn't invincible in his games either. Parrying is just something else I think lol not sure why it exists.

Not sure if already mentioned, but the Final Smash is also a reference to Yellow Koopas re-entering a shell which makes the shell track down Mario as it spins to attack while it shuffles through colors of each existing shell in Super Mario World. If any Yoshi eats that "rainbow shell" it will gain the abilities of all shells combined: can fly, spitting it shoots fire and landing causes the stomp. No stomp on the Final Smash, but Yoshi still gets access to all the abilities much like how the special shell works.

Here's two changes I want to Yoshi's move set: Side Special - This move would give Yoshi 5 eggs, and if the move was used again, he would throw an egg in the way he does in the games. I used to think the abilities Yoshi got from Koopa shells was indicating different flavors: Red was spicy, blue was light in calories (thus making him fly), and yellow was highly caloric, this making him heavy and shake the ground.

Gotta continue in yet another post... - *Palutena:* Ah, the goddess...who can't jump any higher than Pit. She tends to use a lot of mid/long-range attacks and defensive skills at base, likely a nod to how she gives her support from afar. Of course, all of her specials are based on Powers that she grants to Pit in Uprising, so a custom Palutena has many more options - moreso than most of the other fighters do for their customs. - *Wii Fit Trainer:* Yet another surprise addition to Smash. Her (or his) skillset mainly revolves around her role as a yoga instructor, demonstrating the poses on-screen. Actually, the theme of good health is kinda worked into her specials - Deep Breathing and Sun Salutation can both heal a bit of damage. - *Shulk:* So far, Shulk has THE biggest sword. With its ether blade out, the Monado dwarfs even Ike's Ragnell. However, it generally focuses more on attack area than damage. Probably the best way to understand Shulk's influences in Smash would be his specials. Monado Arts alters his stats, and in turn his fighting style. In Xenoblade, the Arts that Shulk learns for the Monado usually boost stats. This is most true for the Monado Speed and Monado Shield Arts. Monado Buster, however, is an attack, but its effects in Smash could be based on Monado Enchant (which boosts everyone's strength along with letting anyone harm Mechon). Monado Jump and Monado Smash are completely new, but their presence could be justified in that Shulk gains new Arts as needed to change the future to his will. He could have invented those Arts to make use of Smash's system. Fun tidbit on Back Slash and Air Slash: here in Smash, the Monado's blade changes color, which matches the color of those Arts' icons - Back Slash having a red icon as a Physical Art, and Air Slash having pink as a Break Art. The counter move Vision plays into how Shulk receives visions of impending threats so he can subvert them. However, he doesn't exactly have control over when his visions occur, which may be why the Vision special's active frames decrease if it's used too much in a period of time. Lastly, Chain Attack is the successive use of Arts among the team, usually for more than three actions. But why is Shulk bringing in Dunban and Riki? Well, maybe because they're both heroes of their people - Dunban defended all Homs-kind from the Mechon in the Battle of Sword Valley, and Riki is the Heropon of the Nopon up above. - *Duck Hunt:* The dog is still as smug a chuckler as ever, but he's got good reason to in his Smash appearance. After all, he's got even more zoning options than most other fighters. And in a lot of fighting games, many characters designed to be keepaway specialists tend to be seen as annoying or cocky - Peacock, the zoning fighter from Skullgirls, also plays on this trope by being all smug and uppity. Also, he surprisingly fits the role of a hunting dog even more here - note that the off-screen shooter only fires when told to. Hunting dogs give signals to the hunters on where the quarry is, and when to shoot. - *R.O.B.:* Video games might never have made it past 1983 if not for the introduction of the Robotic Operating Buddy, or R.O.B. for short. Introduced as a toy that compliments the Famicom/NES, it reignited support toward gaming. Bringing R.O.B. into Brawl could be a nod toward that great feat, as well as turning him into an "original character" of sorts for Subspace Emissary. In general, R.O.B. pretty much plays like a robot and nothing like the toy, save for moves like the Gyro. Then again, most of his arm movements seem to be based on his turning-torso design, as well as how he grabs opponents. - *Snake:* The man that introduced third-party representation to Smash. Apparently, he was meant to be in Melee in lieu of the Twin Snakes remake of Metal Gear Solid on the GameCube later on. But by the time Sakurai decided to, it was too late to add any more playable characters, so he was reserved for Brawl. His appearance is quite a hodgepodge - it's as he looks in Metal Gear Solid 2, the most recent game in the Metal Gear timeline at the time, but he shares Naked Snake's stubble from Metal Gear Solid 3. Amusingly, he wears the longer bandanna, which as an equippable item in the MGS games grants infinite ammo - which could justify his endless supply of grenades, missiles, and C4 in Smash. Snake using explosive weapons does stem from the decision to not use realistic guns, but it also gives him a strategic vibe. Likewise in the Metal Gear games, you have to plan your moves carefully and efficiently to slip past the enemy guard. - *Ryu:* Coming from the games that defined what we nowadays know as fighting games, his appearance in Smash is actually quite fitting. In Street Fighter, he'd just be your standard all-around character. But by applying some of Street Fighter's mechanics into Smash, he becomes a real standout. Tapping or holding the attack button to change some of his normal attacks is actually a feature from the very first Street Fighter game, before there was even a diverse roster of fighters, but it does allow the Smash team to fit in as many of Ryu's normal attacks throughout the series in as possible. This function was also a basis for Fighter Kirby's abilities - just one of many Street Fighter influences. The other unique trait that Ryu has is the directional inputs, which would be used for "EX" versions of his general specials (Hadoken, Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, and Shoryuken). Focus Attack from Street Fighter 4 was put in to fill out the special move set and to give a good defensive element. As for Ryu having two different Final Smashes, it could be based on Street Fighter 4's option to have all of a fighter's Super Combos available, at the cost of them being weaker. This may be why these are relatively weaker than most Final Smashes. - *Cloud:* Technically, Cloud has the base requirements to be Smash material. He originated from video games, and he's made appearances on Nintendo platforms - Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts: Re:Coded, and the Theatrhythm games. That latter would actually make any Final Fantasy lead fair game for Smash, but of course they went with the most popular one. Amusingly, Final Fantasy 7 was originally intended to be on the Nintendo 64 (the SNES before that) with the disc add-on, but then there was the split-up that resulted in the PlayStation, and...Oh, his dash has him glide over the ground? That's a nod to how he rushes at enemies to attack them in the original Final Fantasy 7. In fact, his side taunt reflects his spell-casting animation. But his specials are all based on his Limit techniques - in fact, Smash makes use of all his Limit moves except for Meteorain (Braver is his front air attack). His Limit Break mode has a blue aura, yeah? He actually bears this aura in Advent Children whenever he's worked up, especially as he's dealing the finishing combo to Sephiroth.

I spent more time with the N64 Yoshi, but honestly the Melee Yoshi is my favorite as far as visual design is concerned. The Melee Yoshi takes from the very first design I ever saw of him in Super Mario World, and the main reason why I like that version so much is because Yoshi actually looks like a dinosaur...and not some jumpy little kid dressed in a costume.
