Pretty awesome pond! I’ve been wanting to do a water feature with a wooden barrel and was looking for ideas. This is by far my favorite one.

@MichaelRoninTV Жыл бұрын
Hi Sharen, that sounds like some type of algae. I had it too. You can buy a powder that you throw in the water that is supposed to kill the algae. Give that a try :)

2 years later..would to see an update. How is the barrel faring?
@MichaelRoninTV2 жыл бұрын
It's still going great :) the pump died once but only because of a common problem with them but the actual barrel itself is going well :)

I've been told by a fella selling barrels to use a bitumen water proofing inside as I intend fish. Did your plants down on the bottom of the barrel reach the surface?

I need your help! Was trying to do the same drain system as you and measure the hole in the barrel and it’s 2 inches the bath tub drain fit perfect but I’m not sure what size gate valve you used! It’s confusing to find the right one and nipple.
@AmazingArnoldVoice Жыл бұрын
I figured it out and went with 2 inch gate valve, 90 and used to non over flow tub drains for inside. It came out perfect

How did you light it please? About to make my own
@MichaelRoninTV Жыл бұрын
I just used a pond light which is suitable for underwater. I then ran the cable out the barrel (towards the top so there is as little water pressure as possible) and siliconed all around the cable/hole :)

Just in the Process of Making a Similar Feature, What Light did you use for the Barrel and what is that Artificial Plant draping over the Barrel?
@MichaelRoninTV3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael :) the light is just a submersible pond light that I got from Bunnings (hardware store). The fake plant was also from there I just can't remember the name of it

Thankyou for Your Reply, Have you just Placed the Light at the Bottom of the Barrel or Is so far up? Do you have a link to the Light?
@MichaelRoninTV3 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's just at the bottom but sitting in a pot with a plant in it. I just tried to find the pond light online but just realised I actually got it from a place nearby that sells pond equipment.

I'd be a bit worried that birds might try to bath in the water with it being so full and drown. Maybe if the water level was a bit lower or you could put some wire just beneath the water so it can't be seen. Had that happen to me with a rain barrel once, always have a lid now.

I love this! I was slightly horrified when you pulled out that plastic pipe. Lol. The brass looks a million times better! I like all of the little extras you added. Did the plant inside grow well? Did the fake hanging plant last? We made a water fountain out of two half barrels, one sits higher than the other and feeds the water into it. The problem we're having is keeping the water clean. No matter what we use, it's been growing moss. We've cleaned it out thoroughly many times and used the proper chemicals. Any suggestions? Have you had any problems?
@MichaelRoninTV Жыл бұрын
Yes, mine is very much the same. Especially because I ended up putting fish in mine. One thing that has helped is I put an algae solution in every couple of weeks and that seems to keep the water pretty clear (it's harmless to the fish also).

You should have not fed the hose all the way to the end of the tap to get a more of a natural fall...

I did pull it back in a little bit. If it's too far in the tap it seemed to backfeed into the tap and come out of the bottom
