Excellent video. I especially like the importance you place on the genome. Much of my work is trying to bring back the genome into psychology where it belongs. Keep up the amazing work.

The symptoms are a signal for action, and in action you'll find adaptation and resolution. To acknowledge this is to acknowledge the massive intelligence of the unconscious, something beyond what we could fully understand but a part of us that seeks health and homeostasis. Great seminar!

An excellent overview of how complexes form, and how they can conflict with and cause the repression of instincts and affect. Another highlight for me was the idea that optimal self-preservation is to be optimally adapted with minimal distress. That's what the genome and the instincts want, for sure. Great video!

Creating a counter complex that supports our self regulating principle of optimal psychobiological and psychosocial adaptation is so genius. Reconnecting with our instinct by receiving the signal our body provides, saying thank you, and feeling into that, is fundamental in synthesizing our futures in a way that is complimentary to the downstream intention of our genome. It is not an easy task when the ego is weak, and maladaptive complexes are strong. A trance state can certainly help if needed. “Know thyself”, and your personal myth, is that which will strengthen it. This video is pure alchemical gold. 🙏🏼 thank you

the thing about the therapy world being an bad place sadly seems true from what I heard (and own experience). Yesterday I spoke to a friend of mine who has been struggling with her mental health for a long time now and she told me several problematic stories about therapists encouraging "inner child work" (she told me that made her even more depressed), telling her she has a lot of issues and its gonna take a long time for her to heal, or therapists straight up wanting to put her on drugs against her will and wanting to send her to a psychiatry. Luckily she never stayed with one for long.

A very timely video, thanks for sharing it from an IPSA training seminar! This relates very closely to information included in the Personal Myth handbook that I was reading just last night. It also landed perfectly on the day I got my referral to see a respiratory specialist to start with my biology and work from there, rather than viewing my breathing difficulties psycho-reductively as was discussed awhile back.

Excellent. Thank you. Many of my own thoughts and questions were expressed here in a synchronic way. I’m studying as a counsellor and though I understand it’s value through experience I have many questions regarding its utility. I also work in a secure mental health hospital and am very much aware of effects of trauma and the difficulty in treating it. I am so pleased to have found a voice and mirror here for many of my beliefs , enquiries and intuitions. The way in which you are open to multiple disciplines but are not ego attached to the point of arrogance is greatly appreciated. I have always felt that a truly holistic view of mental health is the only way forwards but have never found this put to practice until discovering your work. I would very much like to study with you at some point. I wish I was in the financial position but that will come I’m sure .in the meantime I look forwards to checking out more of you content .

The metaphor for complexes resonates deeply, it helped resolve some contradictions I had. It makes more sense to see it in terms of teleology, in a way, it 'works' for the Ego, as long as the Ego is in conflict (and cannot find out). I also tried to 'trick' anxiety by considering it state-dependent and try and change the affect in those situations - but that itself is a lid of fear! Would have liked to hear more on counter-complexes, I can intuit that but not fully. Also, thanks for the honest discussion of therapy. I myself have found that apparently 'naïve' therapists can often bring about more positive change than highly trained 'unconditional regard' therapists, which generate loops. Many thanks for this quality content, as always, Steve and Pauline.

I think one thing this video demonstrates is how important it is for parents to acknowledge the emotional experiences of their children and build ego strength by teaching children from a young age in an appropriate manner how to accept signals from the unconscious, that "bad feelings" are really there to help us. Some general insight I got from working on myself and realising how I dealt with things is that young children's egos are still developing and cannot understand and deal with certain emotional and instinctive internal conflicts in any other way except by suppression and repression (developing a complex to deal with it and forgetting about it). I think essentially that is one of the main problems with both emotionally neglectful parenting and overprotection because, though they are very different, they both essentially disrespect the child's psyche in different ways, undermining the capacity for the child to gradually build ego strength! Emotional neglect ignores and disregards the child's affective needs while overprotection tries to smother the affect and make the "bad feelings" go away, both leading to problems later on in adolescence and adulthood with regards to biopsychosocial adaptation. I personally think school systems in general need a drastic shift from an overt focus on cognitive and intellectual academic achievement, which itself causes unnecessary distress at times, to a healthier balance between rational academic intellect and "emotional education".

@@JungToLiveBy Thank you so much Steve. It really is astounding how clear, and accessible you make this for just us ordinary people, and how generous you all are, with these videos. I've been able, because of things I've bought from you guys, and also because of these videos, to understand myself so much better, and feel like I have a "map" This week. I was journalling about something, reflecting, on my dad, who died when I was 16. I'm 51. It was quite intense. The polarities. Like one side vicious. One side collapse/fearful. I kind of just let it all unravel, and exhaust itself. Weirdly. I then had this inner "no" Just a very quiet, peaceful, solid, "no Fiona" It felt very similar to loving firm boundaries with my daughter, when she was young. The this video came up. And I wondered. Whether this, is an example, of a "counter complex" I really look forward to the next video. Thank you, Steve, Pauline, and James.

Is it possible that we all have a destined path which is straight and narrow but there are experiences that make the way crooked and sometimes treacherous; plus, free will mucks up the process of traveling smoothly on that path of destiny? And is it possible that destiny is no more than the fullest, healthiest, most vibrant, thriving form of our genome? Is this the Self that Jung wrote about?
