His face lit up when he was asked about Jesus. I think his answer was meant to be relatable to the average warped tour audience who may or may not be Christian. Plus it's hard to put how you feel about Jesus in a sound byte. Let's cut him some slack.

@Random dude Sorry random dude but the existence of Jesus as accepted as history whether his divinity is true or not. Personally, I believe saying the Bible is supposed to be more of a moral compass is a cop out for most people that say it than an honestly held opinion.

Yeah like he's (so far) not turned out to be extreme with his beliefs, and if you're a fan of this band you can't NOT know their religious base. I no longer believe but I still find a lot of strength and solace in the messages they sing.

This guy handled the interview like a champ. Most interviews ask what the sound of the new album will be. But to do an interview involving religion depression ect and handle it well. Props to you man.

So because Matt T. is asked to explain a worldview in a few sentences and it catches him off guard, he's not a Christian? Come on people.

It’s because of petty nonsense like that why I couldn’t deal with being raised in the church. His response was honest and down to earth, and wasn’t the usual canned lines like “the alpha and omega”, “the almighty”, “our redeemer”, etc.

"Pardon me while I throw up. I guess some people never grow up. What happened to the salvation you claimed? It breaks my heart to see how much you've changed." - Relient K (2001) In all honesty though, a return to form and a basic understanding of Christ's saving power is evident in _Air for Free_. Blessings!

Matt is such a great songwriter and lyricist. Matt Hoopes seems super down to earth and loved his comments here. Listening to Two Lefts Don't Make a Right was one of the points that made me decide to make music. And all these years later still love their tunes.

He answered the question rather than using it as an opportunity to testify. *shrug* "What's your perception of Jesus?" - "everything" - coolest person to hang out with - gives great advice on how to live your life - a friend After reading the Gospels manymanymany times, I think that's a legitimate perception of Jesus as a person.

The members of Relient K are passionate about music. They are also passionate about their Faith. They are from my home town and I graduated with them. They always have had wonderfully strong faith in Christ. But they are MUSICIANS not pastors. Where people are in their comfort in talking to THE MASSES about their faith is between them and GOD not YOU. Judge not lest ye be judged. Sound familiar? It's not up to YOU to say ANYTHING about their faith. They aren't professional speakers or pastors or teachers. It isn't up to YOU weather or not they are "worthy Christians" that is strictly up to God.

@@thankyou2532 I know this is from 6 years ago, but that's a very... loose interpretation of that verse. Here's the full context, 23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath? 24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Jesus wasn't approving of their judgment, rather saying they should look beneath the surface before judging. He was really saying, don't judge others based on surface appearance. Psalm 75:7 It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall. Matthew 7:1,2 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. Only posting this so anyone that sees this will understand that the Bible does not permit judging.

This is an old video by now but I really like the way Matt explains his connection to Jesus. Its really a way I can connect to and I think a lot of the people in the comments are reacting to this deeper then it really is. Obviously we all have a different perception on faith itself, Matt's may be different then yours, that doesn't mean you should immediately diminish and attack him because of his perception. Christianity is built on the idea of welcoming everyone no matter their background, sex, race or upbringing. No matter who you are, you can create a relationship with Jesus, and no matter what your perception of Jesus is, we need to understand, accept and embrace others beliefs of not only our own faith, but of other faiths and beliefs too.

I never comment on videos, but I have to say, in Matt's defense, the question was "what is your perception of Jesus' and, not for nothing, the "awkwardness" in Matt's answer probably has a lot to do with the hypostatic union being a MYSTERY of faith. It's not something you can easily put into words and that's why Matt is so amazing for what he does. I am currently getting my Master's degree in Theology and this kid is right up there in my book with great Christian theologians for his charisms

I suffered from depression for a number of years, and while I do think that medication is helpful, it's by no means a final solution. I found that if you rely on medication to solve the problem, you will only subdue it, not get past it. In order to work through depression and other mental illnesses, there is a matter of will that one must have to work through it. That's why I'm finally able to be free of medication. And, yes, faith is a struggle, especially in our culture. I've kept my faith.

Seems to me that most of the people denouncing him ARE Christians, which means you understand who Jesus is and why he came to die. However, to the unchurched, the hurting, the broken, those who have never known him on a personal level, he gave a very down to earth explanation. We use the terms "Saved", "Savior", "King" because that is who we know him to be, and we love him for it. But for the non-christian, to know him as a friend is much more personable. Check yourself.

You know what I totally agree with you! While I love Relient K and their music, I do feel like they should all be much more open about their faith as hard as it is. Although it isn't my place to judge, the bible explains that those who are unashamed will be blessed.

Love the comments guys. We did not edit anything short. We are a Christian-based media group, so we ask all kinds of bands about Jesus. But we did not tell them that going into the interview. So Matt's "weak" answer (as many have described) could have been his attempt to not upset us, perhaps thinking we were anti-God or trying to start an argument. But that was our intent. WE give any band an equal opportunity to claim Christ. Watch our interview with Austin from Of Mice & Men!!!

What Matt Hoopes said was good: "you have to make a decision: was it true or not? You can't just say he was a good dude." Matt Thiessen was kind of wishy washy in his answer, It seems like he's not so assured now. If this is true it's sad to listen to their early songs like 'What have you been doing lately', because future Matt T would be the one he was singing it to. I know it doesn't involve me directly, but as a fan you want to be able to look up to your favourite artists.

Yeah dude, I've been finding to my dissapointement that a lot of the singers I thought were Christians almost seem to have lost their faith. But I saw Relient K last year live and Matt T still seemed to be a Christian. I don't know, but I agree with what you're saying, I wonder if they ever play that song anymore...

Guys, I think thats just the way he talks (to all the upset christians out there). I mean his first answer to the depression was "i dont know." He may not know how to express his thoughts all the way--may be a little tounge-tied. He might even be shy for all I know. But listen to what he has to say in his music. That just might glue everything together. I heard the wonderful Jon Foreman say "I'm a better singer than I am a talker." some ppl aren't very good talkers (like me) so cut him slack.

Everyone go look up C.S. Lewis's "Liar, Lunatic, Lord" argument. That's what I think Matt is referencing. He's saying that if Jesus is who He says He is, then it's everything. If not, He's either a liar or a lunatic. He's saying that there's no gray area. As a man who's seen Relient K live multiple times and met members of the band, I'd say that Matt isn't a very eloquent speaker. People need to stop judging and trust that the Lord knows Matt's heart.

Wow at everyone who is dissing Matt for his answer. Judging him for what he said in one interview? Saying you're ashamed of him? Throwing him under the bus for not giving the CORRECT Christian answer? Should he have spoken in tongues and prayed for the interviewer? O_o All the things he listed are true anyway: Jesus does give good advice to live life, He IS everything, He IS the coolest person to hang around with, and if we listened to Jesus we would find ourselves happier than we are.

I just want to point out that nearly ANYONE would be put-off by a direct question about what they think of Jesus unless they were expecting to be asked that question. I am confident that Theissen's love for Jesus is deeper than some neatly packaged words. That being said, I feel like if you are going to be a Christian who creates art that people consume you should convert your motivations into words long before you even think about being interviewed.

Wow, I use to disregard this band based solely on their genre, but now I see how stupid judging them, or anyone, for that matter, can be. His music and lyrics are real and honest, and that's something that I believe everyone should be able to appreciate. Not to mention that Matt seems to be a great guy and a good role-model for those who may find their self struggling with things like depression or self-conscious feelings: you choose to be happy.

I think Matt's faith was shaken from the depression and he's still not 100% about it right now but he still like believes in God and stuff but I think he still needs some time to think about it. Also I think that he is a shy kind of guy and he expresses his feelings better in song. Therefore, what you must take into consideration is his latest work, which is what he has been feeling recently. That will tell you what he thinks :)

God has been starting to convict me about how much I care about celebrities' spiritual lives versus my own or my friends or families. I think that we should care only to make sure their music is helping our own spiritual lives and to pray for both of them as brothers in Christ. We don't know Theissen or Hoopes's spiritual life based on this interview partially because it's just an interview(it could just be Hoopes is more articulate than Theissen) and partially because it's an old interview and their relationships with God could be better or worse than when this interview happened. With that being said, if it just so happens Theissen is struggling with his faith(it's quite a jump to say he's not a Christian,) I'm glad he has Hoopes. Based on this and other interviews(like the one where Theissen says Hoopes takes his kids to church every Sunday, not to be legalistic but it could be fruit of a deeper faith,) Hoopes seems to be really serious about his faith. In conclusion, we should care more about our own and our friends and families' faiths and those who are personally closely to Theissen are the ones who should care the most about his.

That same chapter of Leviticus also bans eating raw meat, eating fruit off a tree the first 3 years it's planted, and shaving your beard. That section of Leviticus was a time sensitive segment. Also, it doesn't ban tattoos in the modern day sense of the word. Back then they would cut their bodies in order to worship/commune with the dead.

Allow me to be a little clearer: I didn't say that CHRISTIANS are the problem with the world, the problem is the people who call themselves Christian but sit there judging other Christians and being hypocritical. Jesus didn't point fingers (except at the Pharisees which were the pompous political Christians of his day), he said to love each other, and put others before yourself. As soon as Christians start actually being Christ-followers and not Church-ians, the world will finally see the light.

I definitely feel like Hoopes countered Theissen in his answer about Jesus. Theissen ways basically saying he was a cool dude, and Hoopes says you can't just say that. You can see it in his face as Hoopes is talking, like he feels uncomfortable.

I disagree, I think both understand eachother very well, and Hoopes built upon what had already been said. Neither statement was actually a contradiction of the other, they were complimentary. I think Hoopes understood that listeners might interpret Theissen's answer a bit differently, and Hoopes took it upon himself to clarify the message to avoid confusion. I also feel this way because Relient K's lyrics in many songs indicate the general consensus within the band that Jesus is the saviour.

If you listen to it again, that "says" doesn't mean this person doubts Jesus. It means he's giving the perception of Jesus as a person that he gets from Jesus' *own words* - the parables, talking to the woman at the well, driving the moneoylenders out of the temple, etc. - beyond just glowing descriptions given by writers of the Gospels. Personally, I think that's pretty cool, focusing on Jesus' personality - and he's answering the interviewer's question.

To those people doubting whether Matt's a christian or not because of what his answer was; it's very normal for christians, when asked about their faith, to back away and try to avoid the question. It's our nature which makes us feel ashamed, or that we have to explain ourselves, or accommodate for the views of unbelievers. It doesn't mean he isn't a christian :)

I thought their descriptions were a little bit lacking too, at first. Then I thought about it and realized that their music speaks for itself. More than likely, as many have pointed out, they wanted to be able to reach out to all of their fans, not just the Christian ones, with what they said. Bring the listeners in first, then hit them with the Message in the music. And, if you have ever listened to the "Unknown" song in "Two Lefts," you know that Matt isn't the best conversationalist. Haha.

I think that "what is your perception of Jesus" is a very hard question to be asked on the spot like that so people shouldnt give matt such a hard time. Its a huge question and a very difficult one to answer

Depresses me to see one of my band idols have a such a simple view of Christ... he wrote all these songs, claiming to have a strong faith and relationship and understanding of Christ.... But Jesus way way more than just a cool dude or a guy that would be a great example of how we should live our lives. Jesus is/ was a savior that gave everything in order for us to receive the kingdom of heaven someday.... why is it so hard to say that? I love matt and matt.. i just hope they truly understand !!!

He is my savior. And so thank you Lord. And even in hard times rich or poor. Please let God be the roller of your life.

@PrettyTiaF That's a great insight. Most people become (or try to ) musicians to speak what they truly feel. And if it's hard to answer questions in an interview it must be easier to do so in song with a lot of thought put into lyrics. (like "Friday" XD)

Last I checked Matt is still alive and breathing. Its our struggles that make us stronger. If it wasnt for his struggle he wouldn't have written such a great CD. And why the caps?

Actually, something that's interesting is there's another interview(I think you can find it on KZbin, it's called "Matt Hoopes on the business decision to be a Christian band" or something like that..the thumbnail has the Collapsible Lung cover) where Hoopes talks about the fact that while he and Theissen are still believers in Christ, they are careful how they talk about about their faith because they never felt comfortable with the whole idea of a Christian genre and don't want to be pigeonholed. He says that's why Theissen may seem flippant about his faith in some interviews, not because of what's in his heart. Now, if you disagree with their approach and think they should be 100% comfortable with the Christian band label, feel free to be upset but at least be upset about what the truth of the situation is if you're going to be upset. I know Hoopes is very active on the internet, so I think his comments in the other interview is a response to all of your posts.

I feel for Matt trying to answer a question like that; he may be very strong in his faith, but coming up with a description of the Savior in a few sentences is not easy for everyone. I would also have struggled to answer definitively, right there on the spot.
