Saying something, like believing it, is nearly effortless and nearly meaningless. Doing it is all that really matters. Repeating mystical mumbo jumbo phrases, and even believing them, is NOT what makes a Christian. Protesting at funerals and flinging hate speech are not just un-Christian, they're actively anti-Christian. Being Christian requires genuinely trying to behave in a truly Christian fashion, something the Westboro cult members clearly do not do. According to Christian mysticism, they are servants of Satan following a false prophet.

I almost went to that show Kansas City, and I wish I had. Would have been worth the 3 hour drive down there. They got on the flatbed and sang a song about man love, directly at WBC. It was awesome (they have the video on their channel). Foo Fighters don’t tolerate hate, and they are not at all intimidated by WBC. Love them for that.

I went to school with two of Phelps' boys. The church regularly had fundraisers (selling candy bars), and they could not go home until they sold their quota. You would see them on the street at ten at night, hitting all the bars and trying to sell enough so they could go home. Even before he was disbarred, he was a total whack job.

I was a funeral director in Wichita, Kansas when we held a service for a fallen hero. With the help of the family, we sent up donation cans and pledges based on how any minutes they stood there protesting. We raised a lot of money for a local gay organization. Then when we got to the cemetery, there was a large crowd of military veterans on motorcycles which kept them away from the grieving family. They never came to one of our funerals again. I just wish I saw their faces when they received the Thank You from the gay organization. You fight hate with ingenuity, because their heads are full of Stilton Cheese.

Read the writings of their contemporary extremists, such as James Winthrop and you get a clearer view of the roots of such movements. I watched british journalist Louis Theroux documentary about this babtist group. Deeply disturbing - they preached that if you got killed, injured, that something bad happened to you that was your own fault - and God was punishing you. They had little kids standing with their hateful signs( kids that were to small to know how hateful their message was). Louis Theroux really showed how one mans hatred( Phelps) trickled down through generations and how he took his disappointment of his own failures out on the world.
