I always wondered why steel waterfowl loads weren't advertised as pulling double duty as perfectly adequate turkey loads. For us guys that can't afford a million different components and a dozen different powders this kinda information is invaluable. Thank you. I'll be getting my Lee Load-All dusted off to make up some 3in Steel BB loads to have on hand for the few days a year I can chase turkeys, and also for the once in a blue moon I get a chance to shoot at Teal and Mallards with the double barrel.

Me and my family used this load in both the 2.75" and 3" for duck hunting this year. They work excellent. I'm going to dabble with some #2 shot soon for a slightly better pattern, but these still did well, like I said. Mr. Bill Kalwas hooked me up with 200 3" Remington's for about $32 (shipped to Utah from New York). Some of the hulls had dings in the brass, but they functioned well in my 11-87 and my dad's A5. They DID NOT cycle well in the Browning BPS... Just FYI.

Also, I was using CCI magnum primers. Sometimes the hulls would separate and even stick in the chamber. So I'd say if you're going to use magnum, put 32 grains of Longshot. Tests with the #2 went well, however to get good crimps, you need an overshot card. I just used an old cereal box and some scissors for the cards-- worked great.

Hi Wade. I was wondering why you switched to Steel Rated Modified Chokes and 40 yards for these rounds, as most of your videos use Full Chokes at 50 yards. So I asked a friend with more shotgun experience than I've got. He told me that one could severely damage their shotgun by shooting large steel pellets (greater than #2 size) through any Full choke, especially the fixed Full chokes of vintage shotguns. I know you're aware of this, but I wasn't. P.S. I really like your videos!

Nice presentation. Where I live shot size is limited to #4 and smaller for turkeys. I wonder if steel would make sense at that size? Also, I have heard of counting BB shot using taped primer trays to keep consistency between loads. I'm not sure I would bother with it but pressure might be a concern especially with steel or 3.5" shells.

Riddle me this shotgun man. I could not get anything but paper Gold Metal Match Federal hulls from Ballistic Products as that was the only hulls they had at the time. 2 3/4 inch Multi Metal shot cups and around an ounce of steel BB shot. 33 grains of Longshot powder and right on the bottle it gives over 37 grains for a 1 1/8 ounce load. Two in a row blew the case heads apart at the rim? Why? I even went down to make sure it WAS Longshot and I DID have the scale set correctly, all was as it should be. These were shot in a 930 Mossberg Auto loader in good condition and clean. After the blowups I shot two #4 lead Magnums threw the gun with perfect results. I'm not a newbie and have loaded probably in the millions of shells for shotgun, rifle and pistol in my life. I DO know what I'm doing and I'm always safe as I can be doing it. So why would this happen? Before this mishap I had loaded four with a stought load of Green Dot and those wouldn't even eject from the gun and left a LOT of unburned powder in the barrel. I've never had a load posted right on the powder can blow up in the chamber like this the only difference being the shot. They were shooting an 1 1/8 of lead and I loaded one oz of steel. Any Ideas on why ?

Bubba, thanks for great videos. One question if I may.. you use Longshot which is close to Steel by burning rate. I have some steel left but looking for a substitute. Great video, as always. Question: Can I use a TUPRW12 wad on your 2 3/4" Longshot load instead of the Multi-Metal? Also, what kind of primer did you use? I was going to try either a CCI Mag or a Win 209 with a Rem STS hull. I shot some BBs with some Alliant Steel powder last week and couldn't believe how hard those little hornet nests hit! Probably a great home defense round, especially for poor shots! Perps would get shot again by the MRI machine!

They are actually harder than the steel shot made for shotshells. BUT, you will notice the high quality wad he is using here is what keeps the shot contained till it exits your bore. Sadly, BPI has discontinued these particular wads. But there are other steel wads out there. Head to your local gunshop and ask if anyone working there reloads shotgun. I have the Lyman "Shotshell Reloading Handbook", it lists many steel loads, I recommend getting any book.

Bubba roundtree outdoors if you would could you please respond to my message. It's in regards to a similar comment from another viewer. I'm active duty military stationed in California. Well that being said were required to use non toxic shot for Turkey hunting and it can't be any larger than size #2 pellets so With that being said I can't afford to pay the big ticket prices of alternative non toxics for better Kinetic energy and penetration. So here I am watching your video. Point being I was wondering if you had data or seen the results of using pure copper bbs as in the "copperhead" brand or something of the like. Because the conclusion I came to is this I've found a buddy that does shotgun reloading I figured I could use the pure copper bb's to experiment with and if they work use for waterfowl. And that would give me the ability to try to and find normal size copper shot in say size #4-6. I feel that a good high brass 3 in shell with 1 1/4 oz copper shot would produce good down range accuracy kinetic energy and good pattern density. All this being said I already have decent quality nickel plated waterfowl loads "Winchester dryloks" 3" 1 1/4 oz #4 size that pattern well. Could I go as far as to use that existing shell (which is economically cheaper and more easily available) and just contact say carlsons and have them recommend a choke tube that would fit the bill as in give that expected xfull toy choke pattern ?

are there any other hulls this load would work in? For instance, new Fiocchi, Cheddite, Federal or Rio hulls from BPI? I think these will make nice duck loads for me this fall (I might experiement with steel #3 shot though).

Im assuming the BBs are .177 and not 22 cal but I would rather ask than assume 😆. At my walmart they don't have the steel but do have broth 177 and 22 in the copper coated steel would that work in place of the steel. Sorry for the questions but im new to reloading and I cant find lead anywhere around me and the only powder and primers I can find are at academy and they are not that cheap anymore thanks for the great videos.

Hello, I just found your channel and have been binge watching a bunch of the shotshell reloading videos the last few days. I just picked up a bag of steel F shot and was wondering if you had any experience with loading stuff like that? Thinking about working up a 3/4 to 1 oz light and fast load to shoot chickens with and any predators that might be trying to get into the coop. I also keep that gun where it's easy to get to in a hurry, so it will kind of also be double duty as a home defense load. I'm running lead #2 birdshot at the moment for the chickens and it has worked well. Looking for something inexpensive that will have a little more punch if need be. All of the #4 buck I could find was over $5 lb, plus shipping and I think that would be overkill for the birds (The F might be as well, won't be sure till I can test it out). I'm still looking into getting a #4 buck mold at some point, but the price on that steel was too good to pass up (about $2/lb shipped). Thanks for any information you might have.

I gonna have to voice my opinion. ..that's not enough pellets in the load or the turkeys head...yes it would kill him but if you had to shoot through a little brush it's not enough. ..and if you hunt where I do, your not always In a open feild....but I love your videos I'm just going to say that is not a good turkey load...

Have you ever had any problems with scoring the inside of your barrel using the Daisy BBs? Everyone seems to say not to use them, but it seems to me that loading them to a level below the top of the shotcup will keep them from contact with the barrel. I loaded a box of steel shells using Daisy BBs but haven't shot them yet. Your thoughts?

@BubbaRountreeOutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan... I've never had any trouble at all! The barrels are chrome lined and very tough. You have a wad that carries most of your pellets and as long as you dont have too tight of a choke you will be fine! Wade

Wade - I went out and shot some of my steel Daisy BB loads last weekend. They worked just fine in both my 12 gauges, pump and semiauto. I use the TUPRW123 wad which has pretty thick petals and they really do keep the shot from scrubbing the bore.
