That comment that Dan makes begs the question...wouldn't a "proper" fix...like plugging and redrilling...actually HELP the value of the guitar? Why would anyone EVER go back to stock when the intonation is that bad off? Why not fix it right, then the value should go UP because Gibson's error was expertly corrected. The vintage guitar market is such a mystery to me. I suppose I'll just keep building my own guitars instead of buying... :)
@JillandKevin5 жыл бұрын
@@wescanaday8336 Although it seems logical to do the job "right", there are many collectors out there who care not a bit whether a guitar plays in tune. They want it as it came from the factory. Even the most perfect re-finish knocks the value of a vintage guitar in half (yep, I said 1/2!). No logic there either! Gibson (and Epiphone when they were made by Gibson in Kalamazoo) place hundreds, if not thousands, of bridges incorrectly, while Fender sent thousands of Telecasters out with three barrel telecaster bridges, which, again, couldn't be properly compensated, and there are still idiots out there that insist that "if it was good enough for so and so, it's good enough for me"". Kinda makes you wonder... I used to put those wide Schaller bridges on my 335's and Epiphone Rivieras. There was enough adjustment to get them fairly well intonated (and added sustain as well)

So now I need to do something similar to what was done in this video if i want the thing to ever play in tune.
@HBSuccess9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Leites You got your answers - but let me throw this in... this is why *some* Gibsons become worth a small fortune while other ones get turned into firewood. The 10% that survive un-touched were the really good ones that didn't need any cobbling, had enough glue/clamps used so they hung together, etc etc. It's also why I would not buy any Gibson even today without playing it and doing things like checking the intonation. Or at the very least I'd work with a company like Sweetwater that has reliable reps who can check that stuff for you before they ship.

I removed the bridge and with a metal file brought it down enough to finally work. I also found that some of these will not let the adjustment screw to pass through the top and a little careful filling might give a couple more millimeters to work with. I decided to go this way instead of shimming the neck. There are lower profile bridges but this is just a knock around guitar and I saved myself a couple hundred dollars.

Hi, the second mark you say from the center of the 12th fret is 9/64"and that should be the center of your bridge right? then you say you move the poles 3/64" why, am I missing something? please clarify thanks
@stewmac6 жыл бұрын
It seems you may have misheard Dan. He does recommend making a mark 9/64" beyond the center of the 12th fret that should roughly align with the center of the bridge (if it has been mounted in the proper position) when moving the end of the rule to the center of the 12th fret. However, at the 1:26 mark in this video, Dan says that he's setting the post further back by 3/16". This allows Dan to mount the bridge in the right location, providing enough room to adjust the saddles for proper intonation.

I have a late 60s Teisco that I'm rebuilding an adding a tunomatic bridge. It has a zero fret. I measured from zero fret to 12th fret center and was about to mount it exactily twice to the center of the new bridge. Then you add the extra 9/64" for compensation. Is this universal? I've also heard to add an extra 1/8" to the base side. I assume I shouldn't do both. BTW, the old bridge was located 1/4" too short).

I wonder if you guys can help. I have a guitar with a Floyd Rose trem in it. I want to get rid of it completely and put a Tune-O-Matic on. I dont want to block it, I want rid of it. Is there a way to do it that isn't an excessive amount of work? My guess at what would be involved as a minimum would be this. 1. Take trem, springs and bracket off. 2. Take out pins and bushes. 3. Dowel the pin holes. 4. Clean out and prep the trem cavity. 5. Make blocks and glue them into the trem cavity. 6. Sand level. 7. Fit Tune-O-matic bridge. 8. Remove hardware and paint / touch-up as required. 9. Refit Tune-O-Matic, string up guitar and be happy. Have I missed something here? The guitar is a 25.5 scale ESP with a Floyd Rose Special so how do I deal with the string spacing? Do I just get a regular Tune-O-Matic and cut notches in the saddles to suit the wider than Gibson spacing? Is there something of the shelf that has the right spacing. Am I fundamentally missing something that would prohibit me from doing this, neck angle or such like? Ok, I have said I don't want to block the trem but how about a tutorial on how to do just that. I know what to do but you guys always have clever ideas that somehow make things way simpler or better.

I was reunited with my first guitar I traded back in high school. The person I traded with lost the bridge. The problem it's not your standard bridge and all signs point to a Japanese guitar. One place told me they think it's a Goya. I saw a custom 63 Red Goya Eko Hagstrom. The tremolo set up looks exactly like a this particular custom guitar. When I bought the guitar the headstock said Gibson. I know now it's not a Gibson and the neck finally broke at the headstock. Plus the headstock isn't your typical Gibson headstock. My nephew found a Gibson Corvus that has a similar headstock to the neck it had. Long story short they told me I can use any Fender neck on this guitar but the bridge measures at 2 11/16 or 68.26 MM from post to post. Where can I find that size of bridge? Desperate in Denton TX.

Does the bridge sit tight enough on such poles? Seems like it can still move up-down (ie perpendicular to the strings), scratching the finish BTW
@sweatshirt02910 жыл бұрын
the tension of the strings holds it down
@HBSuccess9 жыл бұрын
+Timur Iskhodzhanov Scratching is only one of dozens of ways you can ruin the finish on a vintage guitar. If this is a "daily player" sweat and gunk will accumulate under those new offset studs as well. You can put a bit of felt or other separation membrane under - just be careful because any sort of solvent embedded in cheap felt can also ruin the finish. I did something similar recently and used some bits of glove leather I had laying around. Even with that - I'd check it every couple of months until I knew the finish was going to stay stable underneath. Finally- all that said - having to touch up the lacquer slightly will de-value the instrument *MUCH* less than plugging holes and re-drilling. Those kinds of mods are a big no-no - you could literally be destroying the resale value, depending on the guitar and how in-demand it happened to be.

I was considering the bridge being able to swing to the left or right a little. A little movement either way and it would loose tuning and intonation. But, this fix has got to be better than not being able to tune or play at all.

I'm curious as to why it wont tune with the bridge in its original location? I know you measured but it still seems strange that it won't tune? Is it possible the tuning machines may have gone bad aswell? I do like the way you did those bridge posts without drilling new holes. It is a beautiful guitar and that would be a shame if you had to!! Is that the original bridge? If so i'm surprised it came with the brass saddles! Great work as usual Dan!!

You could tune the open strings just fine before the fix but if the bridge is off then intonation of fretted notes up the neck will be off

0:40 We need to measure the distance from the nut to the 12th Fret and Double it. Long and Behold, they've put the bridge in the wrong place, we need to get that in the Right place so that it works properly.
