I took my new and not zeroed 6.5/284 to National Long Range Championships in 2003 where I shot a 200 x 14 in opening 600 yard iron sight match 531. My first sight in shot was a pinwheel X and thus I went for record on second shot. That was a mistake and cause for next 5 shots hitting in 10 Ring at 12 o’clock even though I was making an adjustment for elevation after each shot. Seems the barrel was getting very hot and it did not become consistent until 7 shots had been fired. Bottom line is my inexperience with this round turned an easy win into a 4th place performance. At any rate, my rifle was X-Ring accurate but after about 500 rounds required rebarreling to maintain X-Ring performance. That’s so expensive for me that I now mostly shoot in Service Rifle Division of NRA Long-Range with a match conditioned AR in .223. It’s more fun than the 6.5/284 but with only half the MOA wind constant of the 6.5/284 it requires more thought about correct wind favor. No doubt though the 6.5/284 is what you take to the long line if ya want to win in High Master Class level of competition, which demands much from rifle, ammunition, and shooter’s marksmanship development.

I'm using Retumbo with Lapua brass in my rifle with a Brux barrel and Defiance action. One tiny hole per 3 shot groups several times over several weeks. Tagged a 9 point buck and a doe last season no further than 100 yards and both down in a 5 min span.

@@magwamagwa45110 I only tried H1000 with that bullet in my gain twist Bartlein barrel. I worked charge weights up with only 1 seating depth and with 10 shots never got over 1/2" - oddly all 10 rounds made a smiley face. So I just loaded them up at max charge, retested, and subHalfMOA at 100. Tagged 1 doe with it in 2022 season at 210 yards quartering away and dropped her.

I wish I could enjoy your services ,been in Canada sucks sometimes. This is one of my favourite calibers. I think you could get much better results with a powder change. My best accuracy is with 156 Berger’s at 2900 fps . Retumbo for me is much better than the 51.7 grans of H-4831SC that I started with . Reloader #17 works very well in 30” FCLASS gun . Great video and information here. Sir, is switching/ upgrading from my .260 Remington to the Norma worth it in the long run? I've wanted a 6.5x284 for a while just concerned if I'm splitting hairs and if so, is this a good thing considering I would almost have to reload for the Norma? My 260 consistently groups sub half MOA, just striving for better at distance or wondering if I should simply be satisfied without switching calibers. Also, my 260 is my primary rifle that I enjoy shooting paper, steel and have taken many , many Whitetail with ease.

My 260 shoots 2795 to 2825 all day heard the normal is close to 264 mag what do you think
Excuse me Sir. I wanted to ask you a question because you are an experienced reloader. I was shooting 6.5 Creedmoor handloads the other day. They were 143 ELD-X bullets, 43.5 grains of StaBall in once fired Lapua brass with Federal 210M primers. This is my go-to round for 6.5 Creedmoor (my rifle seems to like ELD-Xs better than ELD-Ms). Anyway, I was finishing up the 3rd 5-shot group of the day and things felt different. I found that I was unable to open the bolt. I took it home and was able to knock the brass out with a cleaning rod very easily. The brass had pressure signs all over it (flattened printing on the case head, a deep ejector mark, etc.,). I'm just wondering if you have any experience with pressure signs randomly happening like this. This is a load that is on the hotter side but it's within what reloading manuals deem to be safe. The only thing I did differently before going to the range was oiling my bolt. Could oil in the chamber have caused the crazy pressure spike? Anyway, I am just trying to think what might have caused it.

What is a 6.5-284 "Lapua?" I've heard of 6.5-284 Norma and 6.5-284 Winchester.
@blakemakison52962 ай бұрын
Chamber designed for Lapua brass. Lapua brass is larger than Winchester at the base. I had a rifle chambered for necked down Winchester brass and Lapua brass didn’t work well in it when it came to market.

@@blakemakison5296 Thanks. I guess I got lucky when I had both of mine built. I did tell the riflesmith I was going to be using Lapua brass. He must have had a reamer for it. Both shoot better than most people are capable of. One has a Brux the other a Bartlein gain twist. Actions are Defiance and Stiller.
@arnoldgrubbs20052 ай бұрын
Well, according to Hornaday, the only difference is the amount of "free bore" in front of the neck. More space in front of the neck before the projectile contacts the rifleing. The winchester has less, the lapua has more. Hornady loading book is for the short freebore. This means a bit less internal volume so pressure is higher with less powder due to the smaller volume.

Gez…so many want to jump in and give their version of what should be and should not. As the gentleman here that made the 6.5x284’s shoot well…as he pointed out there’s just so much that there’s just a lot of variations and sticklers involved basically you have to work to get accuracy down to a point a gun owner accepts. Come on….guys like me that shoot for hunting and not competitive shooting with a 6.5x284 “Whatever”…and I do have a 6.5x284 Savage Long Range Hunter…we want hunting accuracy. We’re not shooting on a bench for hunting…and let’s face it…a dead tagged animal shooting whatever chambering you are using…is a dead tagged animals taken ethically at ethical shooting ranges using a rifle that you’ve practiced with in whatever shooting position is available when a shot presents itself. Enjoy the video…we can’t use anyone else’s opinion..look at the reloading data available. Everyone’s rifle is a beast onto itself..no two are alike. Peace.
