"it can do more than it is allowed to do" is basically the motto of reMarkable.

Great coverage of the issue. I ran into this when I first got my tablet shortly after release. Support said then that they would look into it. Glad to hear there is a target version for the fix. FWIW I'd be happy with it just being tuned correctly. A third contrast option wouldn't be bad either. I don't "need" to fine tune the display myself but wouldn't be upset if they did offer that. I choose reMarkable because it just works. As an IT professional, I tinker all day log with tech. My rePP is my oasis where I can de-tech for a bit and I'd love it if they can keep it simple.

Would you please post somewhere this particular PDF file, that was used in this video? So, I can also upload to my RMPP , which is on the latest 3.16.1.X firmware and see if it is reproducible on the latest?

Some people on Reddit presented comparisons of color reproduction differences between pre 3.16 and 3.16 (which is already out of beta). The difference is huge, the light/bright colors are much better visible right now, and dark colors are also distinguishable. Contrast filter option is also applied specifically to only those parts of PDFs in which there is text only.

I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements, once my device receives the new update. So far, I'm still not getting 3.16.

@@MyDeepGuide To be honest it's quite interesting that they can modify or calibrate how a device renders colors with software updates. That it is not entirely restricted by hardware components, but can be tweaked (to some degree, of course).

It's a fairly normal and a necessary level of control that they have to have, in order to calibrate the content display to their liking. Technically, it's fairly simple how it works: the system reads a pixel color value that is sent to the display driver and the algorithm changes the color values to what the calibration settings tell it to do and then that modified color information is then sent to the display driver that tells the display what to show where. This is an oversimplification of the process, but that's the gist of it :)

Very good demonstration of the issue, thank you.

You need to be able to turn the filter/contrast off on the rM2 unit, as well - I have several documents with light grey text that are simply invisible on either the rM2 and rMPP screens. Pretty aggravating. I see it perfectly well on the Supernote Nomad and the Boox Note Air 3C.

I literally reported this problem to remarkable on the same day I received the device. I'm waiting for the fix.

I'm on the beta program and just got the newest update 3.16.1.0 and I think they have improved the color filtering on this version. wasn't able to find the exact color table used here but there are discernable color blocks when I looked at a cmyk chart

I have just tested it briefly with a file on my RMPP (version 3.16.0.67) and I am surprised at how great the result of the color display is. Apart from yellow in the 10 and 20 percent range, every color is visible in every percentage range. The grayscales are also displayed excellently. However, I am not an expert and I am not sure if this finding is enough to claim that Remarkable has solved the problem. The contrast filter was on "adaptive" which is same as "off".

3.16 specifically mentions this should be resolved, or at least appear more favourably. I would be interested in the re-run.

As soon as my device receives the 3.16 update I will do it, as I am interested in this difference too, as I mentioned in the video :)

What's ur opinion on RLCDs are they not a good alternative to e ink?

Interesting! thank you. While I don‘t like all these controls on the Boox device, because I constantly try to change settings and not focusing on the actual reading, it is interesting to see that the RMPP hardware is capable to do (to present) more. Hopefully the reMarkable team doesn‘t do any „over engineering“ and providing „tons“ of settings in the upcoming update; I still like to just use, read and write and not playing around with settings…

I totally agree, and it wouldn't suit the mentality of the device at all, but the functionality offered should work better. Thankfully, people who have been beta testing the 3.16 version report that directly this issue has been improved significantly, so I am eagerly looking forward to the update 3.16 arriving on my device so that I can check it :)
