Thanks for the great review Marty, but I think on price, they're well out of my budget. I live in the UK and have spotted an artists' grade watercolour set that is so much cheaper than the likes of Rembrandt, Daniel Smith, Sennelier, etc. and wondered if you have reviewed/would please review it. It's made for Jackson's Art Supplies, you get to pick your own colours, they are full pans too, plus they ship internationally. I don't work for them, I'm a beginner on a very tight budget and would love it if you could review these please? Thanks :) www.jacksonsart.com/brands/jackson-s/jackson-s-artist-watercolour

Just a note, Rembrandt is a lot cheaper in Europe, since it's made here. For example, Cobalt Blue 20ml is around $18 on US Amazon, but only around $10 in Sweden.

Just as a psa, Jacksons art supplies from UK is currently having a large sale. I was able to get a 48 set of Rembrandt for less than $90 and a set of 48 Schmincke for around $160. It was free shipping for such a large order. It would be a bit more expensive if you were ordering from the UK though. I think here's a tax of some sort. But US orders are much cheaper this way. Sale ends Nov 27 2016. I hope this is able to help someone.

Lovely paints. Aside from the regular set they also have some cool sets like mono pigments, granulating, and so on. And they are very affordable for artist grade paints here in Germany. And I will not by purchasing any of them, ever, because they all include a sable brush. All of them. There is no Rembrandt set that does not include a sable brush. I know that other companies add sable brushes to some of their sets as well, but there are almost always options that either include a synthetic brush or nor brush at all. I was super disappointed when I discovered this, I already had them in my shopping cart, but I am glad that I at least found out about the brush before I ended up buying them. In a day and age in which so many people would not be caught dead wearing fur, it is completely ununderstandable to me, how brushes made from sable and squirrel are thought of as being so completely normal.

You don’t have to kill an animal to clip some hair. Also, they shed. 😉
@justacatwhocantype
@justacatwhocantype Жыл бұрын
@@UJB123 Watercolor brushes with real hair are most often made from sable or squirrel (the one in this set is sable) , and neither of those animals get their hair clipped or simply picked up after they shed. There are sable and squirrel brushes made from repurposed hair, but those are expensive handmade brushes and definitely the minority.

Hi Marty, great videos! Thank you for taking the time and explaining patiently. :) It was good to let folks know how to remove paper from a block, but realize that it is glued that way to keep the paper straight while you paint and apply more water, then, when your painting is complete, use an exacto knife or something similar, and the painting comes off the block easily. I love my Rembrandt pastels for underpaintings, but I have never tried the watercolor pans - I am definitely going to get this little set!

Hi Edgar - You're right about leaving it in the block while you paint. I sometimes do that as well. The little pan set is really nice, especially if you're out on the road and just want to do a quick study or sketch. ~Marty

Lukas is listed as Student grade watercolor paint at Jerry's Artarama website art store. It doesn't mean the pigments used are less lightfast because pigments are pigments from the same source. Its just that Student grade usually do not list the pigments used so you don't always know if the pigments used is lightfast. But it does mean they are more opaque because of extra fillers and brighteners. W&N Cotman do list the pigments used in student grade and that's a plus. Daler-Rowney makes an artist grade too.

Thank you for another great review. Beautiful paint - the layering demo really showcased how vivid they are. I've found difficulties with viridian in other lines to. It doesn't seem to dissolve from pans that well. I think that's why most now use thalo green ( sometimes called viridian hue).

This colours look nice, maybe i will try them:-) I like Sennelier paper also but it is expensive in Austria... i watch this video because i heard that Van Gogh are student colours and Rembrandt are artist grade. Van Gogh are also nice colours with a lot of pigment with but if i mix this colours they can look a bit dirty. I use also white nights, but only the good ones and Single pigmented. My darlings are Sennelier, Blockx, Mijello G.C, Daniel Smith and Holbein. Museum coditions are a bit laughible, because there is no daylight...so i test every brand of watercolours on my window in the hot sun over months and look how the lightfastness is- every brand have colours wich are not lightfast, so i exchange. I dont prefer sets, i only buy seperately. Thaks a lot for your video!

Hello Marty, these small watercolour kits are just so neat! Such a great advantage when compared to oil painting. Probably i will get the very small Aqua Mini kit from Sennelier with only eight colours. But now that you mentioned that the Aquafine colours are quite good i need to think again because Daler and Rowney also offers some very small kits. Your colour chart comparisons are really helpful. My favourite paints are the Daniel Smith, i guess, especially the Primatek colours because of the granulating effect which makes them look so special. Have you ever heard about Kremer pigments? This name sounds again very German but i have never seen this colours here!

I haven't heard of Kremer pigments, but I will look them up now that you've mentioned them to me. My favorite paints are still Schmincke. ;-) I saw the weather today was in 12 or 13 C in your neighborhood, was it warm enough to go sketch? - Have a great evening Anja! - Marty

@owingsart
@owingsart 8 жыл бұрын
Hi John - I'm an oil painter by trade and so I tend to paint dark to light, but I believe you're correct that watercolorists go light to dark. I would recommend tubes because you get more paint for your money. Some of the smaller pocket boxes are only issued with pans though, so I use them up and squeeze tube paint into the pans after I've exhausted the pan paint. Hope that helps! - Marty

Hi Marty! Commonly the viridian pigment makes the paint to dry very fast and it is one of the most difficult to rewet. You could use a spray or wet the pan a bit to get the true color and paint. Also, the pigment is very transparent so it's made to be mixed with greens that are opaque or semi opaque to get it more transparent so you don't make your mix more clear with water. Greeting :)

+roden70 Hi roden - I ordered the White Nights the other day based on your recommendation, but they are on back order from Russia, so I have to wait until mid-March for them, but I'm looking forward to them. If I lived in the Netherlands I would buy these Rembrandt's in the 48 tin, grab some Stroopwafel and milk and head down to the Rembrandtpark (appropriately) and do some watercolor painting. :-) - Marty

I don't know if this was a mistake, but that Amazon link sells the set of 24 instead of 12, so $86.68 (as I saw) is a rather great deal (actually the lowest I've ever seen of this set). It is definitely more expensive than Sennelier, but still cheaper than Schmincke. Jackson's Art does not have discounts as great as American art suppliers, but the listed prices of their European watercolors (W&N, Schmincke, Rembrandt,...but not Sennelier though) are much much lower than those I saw in dickblick or jerrysartarama so I think you might want to take a look at their site. This review came finally as I've always been pondering between Rembrandt and Schmincke. Thank you for your demonstrations and opinions as usual. Also I have a question, which brand has watercolor with the best transparency?
@owingsart
@owingsart 8 жыл бұрын
+Quyen-kun Thank you very much for the notes and the tips about Jackson's Art supplies. The transparency question is a good one. Here's the thing, each watercolor maker has some colors that are very transparent, others that are not. This is true for all of the major manufacturers in my experience. Still bottom line is I think Daniel Smith and Schmincke are the best all-around paints for pigments and transparency. I hope this helps you! - Marty

No offense, but: The reason Viridian doesn't "pop" like you "expected" it, is because it's the real, genuine Viridian. Look, this is an artist range. And thank god a few of them still operate on the philosophy of offering the real deal to the customer. Yes, it would have been much stronger if it had been mixed up from a base of cheap, intense Phtalo Green, as is the case in student ranges and some newfangled brands. But what's the point in offering an imitation of Viridian that is made from Phtalo Green? You are going to offer Phtalo Green as well, aren't you? Could one suspect that the murky intention is that unwary customers will think that the brand is superior? Because Viridian, Cobalt Blue, etc, seem stronger? You may counter by asking: What is the point of having real Viridian and Cobalt if they are so weak? - Well, why don't let the artist decide that! For one thing they have their own unique properties in washes and mixtures which artist may be used to. They are granulary, sedimentary. And they lift! Replacement "Viridian" doesn't. Finally, they are indestructible. Imitations may be very lightfast, but they do eventually fade. Genuine Viridian and Cobalt don't. Ever. But yea, maybe they should have included a Phtalo Green instead of the Viridian in this box.
@owingsart
@owingsart 8 жыл бұрын
You make some great points. I appreciate your passion about Viridian, not everyone would take the time to express it. You're right Viridian and Cobalt in their pure form are extremely lightfast. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and opinions AND thank you for watching. ~Marty

I bought this set and was also disappointed in the viridian and one of the blues. I was used to a Winsor and Newton green. Didn't realize viridian was supposed to be like that. Spent nearly a hundred bucks on my set from a local Blick store too. I have loved working with the Rembrandt oil paints for a long time -- they are beautiful -- so I had to have the watercolor set when I saw it.
@Vermiliontea
@Vermiliontea 7 жыл бұрын
Well yea. It's the drawback of sets, particularly small sets. You rarely get a set of paints that suits you perfectly. The solution is to buy separate paints to supplement. For instance, in this case you could buy Phthalo Green 6752. It's similar to the classic Winsor Green, being the same stuff, PG7 chlorinated copper phthalocyanine. Manufacturers like Daniel Smith, W&N, M Graham, Schmincke, Sennelier don't have such big ranges of colors in order to offer many different hues. They do it to offer different choices of pigments with different properties. But when putting together a set, like 12 colors, for marketing, you have a problem: Which do you select? Rembrandt's watercolors are IMO superb. They belong to the top team, which is basically those I've mentioned.
@shadesofgray5476
@shadesofgray5476 7 жыл бұрын
Well, Vermilliontea, thank you for making me see those colors in a new light. I will enjoy getting used to the properties of those colors. I did add a couple of W&N artist colors to my set for when I want stronger colors. Like I said, I have been a fan of other Rembrandt products for a long time. One other drawback I see to the Rembrandt box is that the front tray droops down. I noticed that my larger Schminke box has a slight bump to prevent that so I glued a small piece of magnet in the same place. Now my tray doesn't droop down so much when I use the thumb hold.

Wow, thank you for explaining that. I hadn't the slightest idea! I am a total newbie, like got a Prima set at Christmas and started playing around a couple of weeks ago. I usually do acrylics. I love Viridian (in acrylics) since it is such a vibrant and lush color, but had now idea about this. I do love granulating watercolors, so I have to research this a bit more.

19:40 Off topic of this video in general, but I believe we now share a curiosity in the Lukas paint. After some more internet scouring, I managed to find a recent development. Your tests of the paints in comparison to others does assure me quite abit, especially the result of your 3 day lightfast test. But if you are curious as to how they might hold up in a longer test, I think I'll be following the tests on this blog jennifermack.net/2016/01/20/lightfast-test-lukas-aquarelle-1862-vs-arizona-sunlight/ . This artist will be putting some Lukas 1862's to the test in Arizona weather for up to 3 months, and will be updating periodically at monthly intervals. I would do some lightfast tests with my own paint myself, but I'd probably botch it up, I'm not very experienced in the first place. Curiously enough, I wonder if the results would be comparable, as I live in California, we too, as in Arizona, get very harsh sun nearly year round. As for some tests in general, I did do a black line transparency test, and from my colours, it appears lemon yellow, and cinnabar red are not nearly as transparent as they should be. They compare more to the semi opaqueness of the cobalt turquoise, or cerulean blue I also have from them. It's not quite a problem for me with lemon yellow, as I'll be moving on from PY3 to PY97 (Usually labeled as hansa yellow medium) as my cooler yellow. As for Cinnabar PR-255, I think I'll be switching brands for this particular pigment t o Daniel smith, for their Pyrrol scarlet (Same pigment). It's come to my attention, no brand perfectly formulates for all of their pigments, so this must be one of those situations. I hope these tests finally put my curiosity, and hopes for this still slightly obscure paint, to rest. As for these Rembrandts, everything seems spectacular. I'd love to try a few colors of many brands if only for the hands on experience, and comparison between each other. I may have to hold off on that idea for some time though, especially with Rembrandt, because of the cost. I think it will be very worth the money in time though, as the learning one can get from trying different brands between the same pigments, will allow you to feel for yourself the differences between formulations made for the pigments. As usual, I look forward to future content!

+AntiFormKeyblade Great detail here and very helpful. My short tests are just very basic and I'm just looking for any initial fading. Putting watercolors in direct Arizona sun for 3 months wouldn't tell me much to be honest. No paints in the world are meant to stand up to direct sunlight for that period without some fading. Many manufactures claim lightfastness against what they say are, "museum" conditions. That is no direct sun, museum glass and perfect temperature control. The fact is museums spend a lot of money keeping paintings in good condition, that includes re-touching them and painting them. Conservationists do this work professionally and their primary function is preservation. For me, I just try to look for the best quality paints I can find. Lightfastness is certainly important, but it isn't the only factor that influences me or many other Artists I know. Your curiosity about other paints is one I share and I feel the same way about being able to explore and try all kinds of paints. Thank you for the information and the support! - Marty

+Adam Wallen Hi Adam - Thanks as always for watching and the tip. I hadn't heard that, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised. They quality is OUTSTANDING, but the price is very, very high. I will check with the company to see if this is true, but I see no evidence of it on their website and they've been in business a long time. I'll definitely look into it for sure. A lot of the venerable old paint makers have had to figure out a different business model as pressure from low cost manufactures and new technologies weighs on them. We need companies like Senellier, Royal Talens, Faber-Castell, Schmincke and others to succeed because they really raise the bar for others. At any rate, I have a cost ceiling and these Rembrandt's just about hit it, so I'm tapped out when it comes to expensive art supplies for a little while. :-) - Have a great day! - Marty

I'm just watching the video years later from the original post. As most of us have probably figured out businesses like HL and Michael's have been switching to offering their store brands rather than professional level brands......I'm thinking due to costs. Also, some companies are not able to continue contracts with US companies due to supply chain issues, costs, transferring production of products to China and other nations. It's been a fluid market. I enjoyed using many professional grade items...i.e. Moulin du Roy paper that HL once stocked. It is only available now from the UK. I'm attempting to now support USA manufactured watercolor paints exclusively....DS, Da Vinci, American Journey, M Graham but it's tough as I have my favorites from other nations. Rembrandt tins are on sale at Jerry's now for $ 88 12 tin set. I'm tempted.

The one thing people who use this set need to keep in mind is the dirty water needs to be disposed of properly. Because the colours/pigments are real pigments, not hues. +King Mambo Studios Thanks for the message and sharing your thoughts on this topic, it's an important one. At a certain point I do see a significant difference in quality. This is less pronounced in the mid range bands like Marco, Bruynzeel, Prismacolor Premiere's and Staedtler's. Those all seem to have roughly the same quality. However with the lower end brands, like Crayola, Prang, Kid Made Modern and others, you can see a range of quality. When it comes to the best brands though, the quality clearly stands out in my experience, for example Faber-Castell, Caran d'Ache and even Koh-I-Noor. Have a GREAT day! - Marty

5ml tubes are a real joke. HOW on earth do they consider themselves for artist?
@justacatwhocantype
@justacatwhocantype 4 жыл бұрын
But then you also have to wonder why artist grade watercolors are sold in half pans. The reason why I sometimes buy 5ml tubes and half pans, and I am sure that this goes for other people as well, is because it allows me to try out new pigments and brands without having to spend a lot of money. I know that some watercolors really shrink down when they dry in a pan, including the Rembrandt paints, but other brands, like Schmincke, hold up pretty well, and then 5ml aren't such a bad amount. 5ml of Horadam end up giving you a full pan. And by this I don't mean that you can fill a whole pan with the tube, I mean that after the paint has had time to settle and dry, you will have a full pan. And that really isn't bad, considering how long a full pan of high quality watercolor is going to last.
