Quick question for either you or JM: at 8:04 the first R1 registers no shield chip damage. But then, the consecutive R1s start building up chip damage. What’s the deal there? Do you have to hit a sweetspot to chip through? If so, what is that sweetspot? Thanks for the great info. Innate shield chip by itself is worth noting here, especially since it’s a buffable weapon as well.

@@Felicificity The thing absolutely doesn't require a sweetspot to be hit in order to chip, just any part of the katana does the job (and it doesn't have a sweetspot to begin with), but I also don't really understand what happened in that clip. I'd assume at first that it was a connection screw up, but judgin' by the consecutive hits - ain't that thing. If I find smth that explains this thing, I'll let ya know

@@kettleling6662 Small thing worth mentioning about the carthus rogue. While Darkdrift gets 34 bleed, which is higher than most other buffable katanas, it doesnt have hold and therefore cant resin cancel like most other katanas. Meaning an opponent can pressure you and prevent you from applying/reapplying the buff. While if you have a hold katana, you can reapply it almost instantly with very low chance of being punished.

@@ryonic Have personally never found resin cansels that useful at all :v If one is under too much pressure to apply it safely - tis better to ditch bleed for the time being and amplify the damage of katana itself by using bundles, which are almost instantaneous and, more importantly, reliable

For the record, you dont have to kill Yuria to get the Darkdrift. If you do her quest up until defeating the soul of cinder, you can return to firelink shrine and find her things left where she was standing. Correct me if im wrong. Edit: You have to summon her for soul of cinder and keep her alive for the fight.

Well, if you want low level invasions you won’t be able to wait that long. ...unless you want to beat the Soul of Cinder at level 30. It’s possible, but tedious compared to a brief spat of Hollow-induced Homicide.

Loved the video, though there's one thing that might've been worth mentioning. Since you can buff but not infuse the weapon, it might be worth it to go for 40 dex and put the rest of the points into faith or intelligence. Get some spells out of it and give your dark drift a strong weapon buff.

I would love to see you take on the Brigand Twin daggers! They work amazing if you have a luck build and give them the blood infusion. The right timing can completely stun and wipe out an unsuspecting gank squad.

There’s actually a mod that makes the Darkdrift into the Elyum Lloyce sword from DS2. Looks pretty cool 10/20: Late clarification. It’s more like the *Ivory Straight Sword*. Which overall is basically a lightsaber

I've used it. I prefer the Black Blade. Darkdrift looks cool with buffs, especially Carthus Rogue. I cast Hidden Body and now me AND the sword are invisible. Oh wait. I was doing a Chakas, Anubis (Jojo Bizarre adventure) cosplay with Dark Drift, lol.

I slaped this on my level 60 +6 30/30/30 bleed build and it's really good at keeping on the bleed pressure with the WA combo/roll catch. It even has a higher bleed out amount than a hollow black blade. Also it's one of those rare twinkling weapons you can put buffs on to which means it benefits from carthus rouge.

What DangitJM doesn’t tell you is that literally every other single katana (minus black blade/O&U) shares the same base 1/2handed moveset, therefore the ONLY thing black blade has going for it is its reduced stamina consumption and its WA. You have neutral flexibility with frayed, and Uchi/WP have superior reach, are also buffable and infuseable, and have a WA that has just as much rollcatch potential. As for the reduced stamina cost, this remains the weapons greatest trait. Speaking from application at a high level of skill, mindgaming the opponent by using your now enhanced stamina bar is a huge benefit. All that extra stamina can be used for setting up far more spacing, reduces time spent neutraling for stamina, which maintains more aggression, as well as punishing people that try unsafe rolling and spacing when they assume you are out of stamina. In this aspect, it is similar to the Lothric banner spear, with similar low stamina consumption, and gargoyle flame hammer in terms of surprise factor. The weapon art of the Darkdrift is a onetrick pony at best, and will only work/not be parried into absolute oblivion if your opponent is virtually ignorant of the blade/overcommits to spacing game. Selecting a weapon based off of the assumption that your opponent is ignorant, or less skilled than you is highly disrespectful, in my opinion, and unfortunately something that the community seems to lavish in. I rate this weapon a “B” out of a possible “S” or a 3.0/5 I look forward to scraping all the assholes to death that are gonna be offmeta-spamming this piece of shit with my Banner Spear, Lothric ugs, and SS

Thanks man for making another weapon fun to use. I remember watching a Revan619 video where he was ranking the weapons. Then I knew that a dark infused Lothric straight sword with a black knight shield and crossbow with exploding bolts was the only viable build. Oh painted phantoms a tournament player uses Valor heart. Okay 2 builds, there are 2 viable builds. Oh Iamamish is using claymore with off hand estoc and mixes the attacks up between the two. Okay so 3 viable builds. Dangitjm starts the underrated weapon series, oh... Also Gabri and Jeenine videos on great and ultra great swords. Found a lot of cool weapons on this channel to try, really appreciate the love for the partizan. You have helped keep this game fresh for my cousin and I. This isn't really a new player channel, but I have seen a few discussions by players saying shields aren't useful for pvp. Some players don't realize that medium and great shields are meant to be used aggressively and paired typically with a medium to fast speed weapon.

I have been using this shit unupgraded for a long time, I was too lazy to get my ass off to get some Twinkling Titanite, but it was well worth it. This weapon is one of my favs, along with Arstor's and Crow Talons, very underrated though, it has some potential for finishing off opponents in invasions and it's fun as hell in duels. R1 spam or R1 -> WA is almost a fifty fifty, very fun indeed. Thanks for sharing love with the Darkdrift.

I'm glad somebody is noticing these underrated gem weapons. I've been using a lot of stuff you've made videos on since the game released, especially the Darkdrift. One con of the Darkdrift is that you can't dead angle the weapon art, which is such a shame. It can be parried from the side despite not directly hitting a parry hitbox. If you want another underrated wep, I highly suggest... THE CLAWS. Especially buffed with bleed, getting a hit with the weapon art while the opponent has high bleed is guaranteed explosion of edgy blood they can't escape. Pair it with the pontiff ring and you'll be racking damage. The only issue is that it's easy to parry, but that opens up options for parry punish backstabs. A good start up combo for the claws is backstep into R2, which results in a gap closer and high potential damage. The demon's fists also benefit from some of the combos the claws have, but with a flashier weapon art and more catered to strength rather than dex. Duels, they work really well but I don't recommend ganking with claws... Their sweep potential is garbage. Give 'em a shot. Even the manakin claws can be amazing if you get the backstep techs right.

manikin claws! :D i've been having fun running those offhand on an rp character (for punches, not parries) and 2handing them for chasedowns. trying to get a better handle on using quickstep; so far i just use it to prompt panic rolls and parry attempts rather than actually dodging or changing my spacing (except when i feel like using them on a boss. super fun to use on dancer!)

I used the Darkdrift in the past, loved it but hated it at the same time. I won't be running it again, but it's fun to see people remembering it's existence. I do agree that people shouldn't be using it in invasions as it struggles pretty hard indeed. Great video though, glad I could finally get around to watching it. I made a build using it with hidden body. The fast start up animations of the weapon art are slightly concealed making parry prediction a tad more difficult and the blade itself becomes slightly more transparent I think. Pretty fun aggressive weapon.

Its fascinating that even after four years we are discovering new tricks, techniques and builds in this game. I think most people don't appreciate Dark souls 3 enough. You just don't get this much complexity in sekiro and bloodborne. And most of the controversial changes that Dark Souls 3 made like changing poise into hyper armor, nerfing magic and adding combos turned out to be a better decision in the long run as the game is more balanced and fair and there are way more viable builds due to these changes.
