I wish I was able to serve my country like this. Being disfigured and not allowed to serve was heartbreaking for me. 18 years later I'm finishing nursing school to go work at the VA hospital near me so I can at least help those that did serve.

But seriously, my Grandpa was a Gunny in the Corps, he served world war 2 and had both knees shot up. He told me when I was 10 that you should never be embarrassed by tears. I will never forget all those that we’ve lost my cousin was in the army for over 25 years and he wrote a book on what happened overnight and to me. It still shocks me for all the lives that we lost the ones that didn’t come home.

Before I was born one of my grandfather's first cousins was killed while he was on a ship. The day was a Sunday in December. The year was 1941. December 7th to be exact. He remains on the ship he was assigned to, the USS Arizona. Even though I never had a chance to know him, I remember him. One day, I will meet him.
