I worked with a dude who worked on MACE : The Dark Age . He brought in the original character design cards they made for the game . I saw at least 10 different characters that did not make the game , and some variants . They used the design cards in focus groups that they would hold in his area , they would bring in kids to pick what they thought was the coolest character was and then rank them . This is how they decided on what characters to use in the game . Well narrow down the choices from what the designers made .

@@richardsalmon2134 It was during that time (MK3) that the franchise really jumped the shark. There was just way too much exploitation going on to make a buck, no matter how cheap it made the franchise look. Between the "tour", the second Mortal Kombat film, the fact that MK3 was straight-up cheesy, and the (albeit guilty pleasure) Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, there was no shortage of dreck to wade through.

I love how these old arcade fighters treat mundane Japanese names as exotic. Seriously, having one of your fighters named Takeshi isn't that far removed from having one named Steve. I'll refrain from commenting on other nationalities, but I suspect it's not that different.

Good lord I own all three of these AND Mortal Kombat 4 on N64 still to this day. Mostly, at this point, for nostalgia's sake. We used to stay up all night chopping off both arms of each other in Bio Freaks, then flying around the screen because IF YOU ATTACKED WHEN YOUR ARM WAS MISSING YOU WOULD JUST SPRAY A STREAM OF BLOOD AT YOUR OPPONENT! It was awesome.

MK died when it switched to 3D. 2 was the high point. 3 was good at the time but in hindsight the magic just isn’t there. Bland backgrounds, boring new characters, they ruined Shang and Liu, fatalities goofy instead of gory (Liu Kang drops a MK1 arcade machine on someone as one of his main fatalities). The new ones are just button mashing crap. Mk9 worked because it was an update of MK1-3.

@@fiendwithoutaface6833 I don't like the 3D games much either, but I thought it was generally agreed Deception was perfectly fine. Plus saying MK3 isn't good anymore and modern MK is just button mashing (which is laughable to me, since they're much more complex than MK1-2) are pretty contentious
