Today's video is a long one about the part of Oahu I was born and raised in, Kalihi. I will go over nostalgic places, most of them not with us today and in between get some classic eats that have stood the test of time. Kalihi is known for their wide variety of hole in the wall restaurants. I could not get to all of them because the video is already too long. Check out my playlist of Kalihi restaurants for other suggestions in this community.

Never lived in Kalihi but I do remember going on road trips with the family, from Waipahu, driving through Kalihi to get to Ala Moana. That Foodland and Savers building was a Wigwam, Wigwam was like a Gems, Arakawa's, Coronets, Holiday Mart... Good old days

Misty, I want to thank you for your efforts and dedication to drumming up some great memories. I don't know how difficult it was to come up with all of those old photos and newspaper articles but I certainly appreciate it. I was amazed at my reactions to each old photo. Nice trip down memory lane. I always like to go by old familiar places when traveling. It's kinda sad to see businesses closed down or abandoned. Leaves me wondering about the people that ran them and what happened. I get a similar kind of feeling like when I saw your old cemetery videos. I love this, you helped me remember so many happy memories. BTW, Farrington ‘66. I’ve lived in San Francisco since 1969 and watching this Kalihi tour was a beautiful gift. In the 1960s our church, which started a couple doors away from the old Kam Bakery, needed a large sheet cake for a celebration. My mother ordered one over the phone from Kam Bakery with a decoration of a large open Bible with an image of a crown (like something from a Bible story) on it. After church service was over the paper cover was finally removed from the big box and the cake had a big open Bible with a clown sitting on it. A clown. Best cake memory ever. KZbin randomly sent me your video and I’m so very happy it did!

Wow ... what a great look-back to those former establishments. Back in the day, GEMS required their shoppers to be members. And I don't recall ever going into Kalihi Valley, though we would traverse the highway through Wilson Tunnel. I used to love all the Delicatessens in Kalihi, had one where Alejandros is now at. 5cents worth salad, 5cents worth chow fun...I ranged all over the valley, even climbed the mountains, went swimming and played in Kalihi Stream, went to Lady of the Mount Church, had friends up and down the valley. I worked as a beatman and sgt in D5 for about 8yrs total. I left Kalihi, I see thru your vid that so many things had changed since I sold my house in 2007. I went to all the places you went to, both on and off duty. I walked everywhere since I was in intermediate school (went to Kalihi Elementary, Dole and Farrington..)

Very impressive walk down memory lane and you remembered a lot! I guess you are pretty old after all lol Miss the olden days so much. Used to bowl at Kam, Classic & Kalihi Bowl. Ate at the original Han Yang many, many times and the owner was my friend's ex-gf's mom. Gem's was always a favorite when shopping for Christmas stuff, but always went straight to the cracked seed section and electronics. We did have a Gem's in Kaneohe as well. Loved the tempura mushrooms on a stick at Boulevard Saimin. Mixed plate at Kenny's with their unique chicken katsu sauce. Kaneohe eventually had one, but to me it just wasn't the same. Used to work at the building where Kapalama Hale now stands for much of the 90's -- if you remember what that was before. Anyway, I could on and on about going to most of the places you've mentioned -- one of the perks of being old and lucky to have lived those days. Really enjoyed watching this and also, I did watch the 1 hour ad before watching this video 😂😂😂

Oh my goodness. Staaaaap! thanks Kevin for your generous donation again. I appreciate it but no need! Save it for yourself or your family. I didn't know there was a GEMs in Kaneohe. Fascinating, thank you! Why is Dillingham ALWAYS in chaos? I grew up 60’s NS as a teen so don’t remember this part of town. I just remember most was the old Hale’iwa Diner (now Hale’iwa Joe’s) & shaved ice … the termites were winning as the entire town was heavily sagging. My parents did not like going into town so missed out eating the wide variety you did as a kid. I live Kona now … no Ray’s here … I wish! Sad to see Sand Island park looking like that … after they evicted all the locals that lived there in such a horrific way … whom were living simply and off of the sea peacefully. Mahalo again!

Dillingham is being wrecked because the rail is running through it. It was fine maybe a year and a half ago until they started to tear up the road. Being from the North Shore is still awesome. Quiet and peaceful. We never really ate out much when I was a kid. We weren't too well off. I think I ate most of my meals out once I was an adult and stared to make my own money. Mahalo for watching!

Everything is after my time. I was born on Dillingham Blvd next to the Kalihi Stream bridge in 1932. The inscription on the bridge said 1932 so it was built in the year I was born. I moved to Kalihi Kai in 1939 next to the railroad tracks and Puuhale Road. I left Hawaii in 1953. I did patronize Libby's Manapua on my visits to Hawaii. It was located two blocks away from where I used to live on Kalani Street. The location was a local corner store in my time.

Thank you so much for this video Misty 💙. The places you mentioned brings up so many memories of my childhood growing up in Kalihi. I came from PI in the mid 70s and the very first landmark I saw was the giant crab on the top of Tamashiro market as my parents used to frequent there for fish and produce. Some places I remember that wasn't mentioned on your video are Q's and Happy's drive in along N. King Street, then there's Old Vienna bakery at the corner of Peterson Lane. I'm glad you confirmed that the original location of Helena's was on N. King Street as well 😊. We also lived up on Konia street off of Houghtailing from 1977 to 1979, so I clearly remembered the original Kamehameha bakery and Ambassador market. That Chinese restaurant in the same corner was called Meilin I believe and I attended numerous parties upstairs in the banquet rooms and back then the entertainment was live bands and not mobile DJs. My dad and uncles had a band called Rythm Express that used to play at baptismal and wedding parties, etc.

Oh gosh Misty! So many good memories for sure! My gramma house used to be behind the original Kalihi Queen super market and I remember she used to buy stuff on credit. We would push the shopping cart home and back to the market, also used to eat saimin at Green Lite Inn, right on King St side of Queens, really miss that place. Used to shop at Muraoka Store across the street and if I remember correctly, the original Kalihi Pet Shop was on King St by Queens too. Had a taxi stand named Kalihi Meter Taxi by Bank of Hawaii across Factory St and we used to go buy stuff at my dad’s friends fishing store, Kalihi Fishing Supply. I can still see Mrs Yamamoto sewing nets behind the counter… Konno’s Grill was a few doors down. When I was in Kalihi Waena School, the original Gulick Delicatessen was right across the street. So many good cherished memories, thank you for bringing them flooding back… 🙏🏽❤️

I think Mr Shimabukuro owned Kam Bakery back in the day, at least early to mid 70's. In the early 90's, I saw him one morning in his bakers whites. I asked him if her still owned the bakery. He laughed and said no, he sold it to the Ayala familly (I think) and was teaching at HCC, but came on weekends to help out. I used to hang out in the parking lot and alley between Ambassador Market and Kam Bakery. We also hung out at Kenny's Burgerhouse. The restaurant at the corner of School and Houghtailing with the big crab may have been the first restaurant to serve king crab. I think the okazu-ya across the street was called School Street Okazu-ya.

KALIHI RULES! I grew up here, and loved that it was situated perfectly on the island of Oahu. Smack dab in the middle of three routes to the Windward side; H-3, Pali and Wilson tunnels. Hope skip and a jump away from Aloha Stadium and the international airport. A balanced amount of distance away from Kahala Mall to Waikele, and Ala Moana to Pearlridge. And only about six miles from Waikiki. As for Kenny's, when I was young, I loved their regular hamburgers. Slight little correction, Jolly Rogers was where O'Reilly Auto Part is. I still miss Libby's Manapua Shop; great pork hash and manapua. Something that Kalihi had a lot of was bowling alleys; Kam, Kalihi, Ft. Shafter and Classic Bowls. How many towns had four bowling alleys within 1 1/2 miles of one another. Right near where Honolulu Ford is, was Kodama Photography; which took mostly all of the portrait photos for Farrington HS's students. And before it became Nanding's Bakery Shop, it was Paul's Pastry Shop. And just a little makai/south of there is Island Manapua's Gulick location. Sand Island Park is the perfect place to end your video, as my late father & mother used to take their very young grandchildren there years ago (1990's); it was a great memory. I loved the old-time photos! GREAT WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!

A major change may be coming to the Dillingham Blvd area near the Kapalama Canal. These are two major projects; one by the City, and the other a private development with Kamehameha Schools. The City's project is to develop the canal area and provide two walkover bridges, lighting, sidewalks, eating benches, etc...and complete it sometime in 2026. The Kamehameha School project is more extensive and expansive. It'll see the tear down of the warehouses and businesses along the Dillingham Blvd corridor, and replace them with high rises and businesses. Dillingham Plaza and Kapalama Shopping Center are targeted for demolition when this happens. Already planned is the move of Bob's Bar-B-Que, from the corner of Waiakamilo and Dillingham, as they will be moving to Gulick and School St; the former location of the since-closed Tasty's Chop Suey. They project to open there sometime in late 2024. So by the end of 2026, this area will begin to look very different with the improvements to the canal and with Skyline rail.

@@EvilTheOne yeah we heard about these plans to make sort of like a river walk since around 2010ish from the neighborhood board. Interesting they are going to make it happen as I thought they ditched the plan. But KSBE does own the land to the shopping center and all along Kapalama canal so I wouldn't be surprised as they are the same ones to get rid of the Waipahu Don Quijote for affordable housing.

Mahalo Rod! Yes Dillingham Blvd was recently an okay normal road until they messed it up for the rail construction maybe a year or two ago. I fell bad for the businesses because no one wants to travel there so they're losing a lot of business. I hope you try oxtail soup one day. It is beefy in flavor and delicious! I just hope you like cilantro since they put a lot of it in it and if not tell them to omit it. You usually put the side of rice into the soup to eat it with. 🤤🤙

I see Kikuya's Japanese Restaurant, to the right/directly across from of Han Yang, many good food choices in that North King Street area.

Back in the 80s there used to be to be wild cotton plants on unimproved land. Teenage years there was something else, gangs would confront me and ask which gang I was with when I was renting VHS tapes to watch with my girlfriend. I wasn’t really thinking when I said, “ U.S. Navy!”. I was in the process of leaving for boot camp at the time, never really had major problems after that. No use making enemies there, eventually they know someone you know and go to the same parties, funerals, weddings, and first birthdays. It’s a great place to live if you’re not a Karen or have an attitude, be kind but don’t take crap. The only I would add would be to never walk around at night, no matter how good the restaurant is.
