Great review Mandy! You went very in-depth and even made me discover things about the game I didn't know beforehand! Like the relationship between one of the SPM songs and one of the TTYD ones) SPM is a great, special game and you really did it justice! P.S. your voice is really soothing too!

Hey yall, Mandy here. Sorry for things being so quiet on my end! For those who are wondering why I haven’t uploaded my next video: I caught COVID a couple of weeks before the intended upload date and this set production to a halt. Thankfully, I have fully recovered and I’m getting back on track. This video is nearly complete, and I am in the process of editing Mario Party DS. I don’t want to pin a specific date, but I am looking to upload the complete 2007 Mario retrospective sometime in July. To anyone who was looking forward to seeing the next video sooner, I sincerely apologize for all of the delays! But I promise this video essay will be worth the wait. Let’s just say this video might be slightly longer than the second Sonic movie. 😄 Thanks for reading! Mandy

Super Paper Mario is one truly emotional and fantastical game. I replayed a lot of times and I love so much how rich in detail the main worlds and Flipside/Flopside are. But the story is really beyond incredible, it was so impactful for me that sometimes I had daydreamed in school thinking about Dimentio and the game in general. Hope one day I will make a video so great as yours on the game.

I was reminiscing about Super Paper Mario after I found out that it's been 15 years since the game launched. It was my first Paper Mario as well, and I enjoyed your video on it!

Watched this like 4 times already. You have such a suave and amazing voice to go with such an amazing game. Incredible attention to detail and I legit can relate to every single point. (The Overtheres theme is one of my faves). Spectacular throwback!

Thank you so much, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the video! I enjoy The Overthere’s theme as well. I especially enjoy playing through Chapter 7-4, and the events that unfold during the end of the chapter.

Awesome video! I'm glad this didn't devolve into another PM video that just pointlessly bashes the modern titles. I think every game in the series has something to love, and SPM's story is what I love best about it (among other things I love about the game as well). Something I see a lot of players knock this game for is the weird, but also kind of boring looking NPCs. Last time I played the game, I actually went around and talked to every NPC after each chapter and was pleasantly surprised! They're much more interesting than I thought they were. They all have their own little side-stories and some of them have little character arcs as well. It was a real treat, and I was so surprised that IS put so much writing effort into NPCs that hardly anyone paid any attention to.

Thank you so much, I have been meaning to circle back to your comment! I agree that there’s something to love about each game in the series, and the newer titles don’t deserve all the hate it gets. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed 5 of the 6 Paper Mario games. The only game I have not finished is Sticker Star. (hopefully someday) 😅 Color Splash and The Origami King have their share of heartwarming and thrilling moments. I also adore the amount of detail the writers put into the SPM’s NPCs. It’s something they didn’t have to do, but they did it anyway. I remember spending my time interacting with the Flipside townsfolk when I was a kid. Maybe it’s my nostalgia talking, but I found the NPCs charming in both their dialogue and design. Now that I think about it, I haven’t interacted with the NPCs in a very long time. I should definitely do that the next time I start a new playthrough, just to see if I remember any of it or learn something new. Maybe it will be like playing SPM for the first time again. 😄

As a Paper Mario fan since the original (the original still being my favorite), I absolutely adored Super Paper Mario. I love how much you talked about the music, something that isn't discussed enough in games. The music is definitely top 3 in the series, contested by PM64 and Origami King. As an aside, I'm surprised how you managed to talk about this game for 30 minutes without mentioning Mr. L, everyone's favorite alter-ego! Heck, you skipped chapter 4 altogether.

2:58 I always loved how Bowser wore his shell OVER his tuxedo, implying he can just take it off. I don’t why, I always thought it was just hysterical to me.😂 Either that, or just ripped a massive hole in the tuxedo but I like my theory better since it ties into the implied lore that he can just change his own shell.
@VoicedByMandy Жыл бұрын
Ha! I never really thought about that until reading this. That is pretty funny 😆

@@VoicedByMandy The more I think about it, it gets even better when you consider that this little visual joke (if you can even call it that) has actually been established in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show (specifically the episode where Bowser tries to marry the Princess in order to take over the Kingdom), and the equipment system basically shows that he can in fact take off his shell Bowser’s Inside Story. And then Nintendo brought back the tuxedo for Super Mario Odyssey and the Super Mario Bros Movie (which is pretty awesome so I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you haven’t already seen it).

In complete agreement with you. I could gush about this game for hours. It just has that much lore and backstory, i actually think it’s crazy how much world building they included. It’s a shame about the controversy at the time of its release, as this game took so many risks and perhaps we would’ve seen more of that. It reminds me a lot of what happened with Pokémon black and white. Now both are basically regarded as cult classics within the respective franchises.

Thank you so much for your comment, I’ve been meaning to circle back to it! It’s interesting how public opinion can drastically change in a decade. I’ve also noticed that with other video games like Sonic Unleashed. I feel that has to do with younger generations voicing their opinions and how they enjoyed those games growing up, regardless of what the consensus was back then. Whatever the case is, it’s really refreshing to see SPM get some love and support by the community!

@@VoicedByMandy No worries, thank you for taking the time to get back to me. Still love this game and I just rewatched your video- a very personal and relatable take. I agree with you entirely.

Great video👍. Also, if you love 💕 playing as Bowser then you’re gonna adore Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story. Its story isn’t as nearly as intriguing but it’s still a cute yet almost dark plot for a Mario game. Also the DS microphone can be really finicky if you play the original version even on a 3DS, but it’s pretty awesome game otherwise. Both this game and Bowser’s Inside Story very special to me.

Honestly, I think it's completely unfair that a lot of the gifs you find when you search up "Super Paper Mario" aren't even clips from the game, and are just "memes" crapping on the game. This was my first ever Paper Mario game both played and beaten, and even if it wasn't completely what I expected, I gave it a shot, and as I got deeper into the game, the more I learned what an unsung hero it really is. Life is too short to not take risks, and trying this game and not knowing what to expect was a risk well worth taking. At the end of the day, Super Paper Mario is an amazing game that really deserves a lot more spotlight, and with such amazing characters, environments, music, and a surprisingly emotional and heartwrenching story, it's a Mario game that is definitely one to remember!
@VoicedByMandy Жыл бұрын
I noticed all of the anti-SPM gifs too and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that with any other video game! I think it’s pretty silly and I guess whoever made them had a lot of time on their hands. 😆😅 I’m so glad to see other people share their experiences with SPM. With it being the best selling Paper Mario to date, I feel like it’s a lot more loved than the PM fans give it credit for.
