St Peter's Hospice cared for Tam after she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
Here, her husband Dan remembers the special times they spent together, and the care she received in the Hospice Inpatient Unit.
This film was made in support of our Room to Care Appeal, through which we are trying to build a 21st Century Hospice for Bristol. Find our more: roomtocare.co.uk

My ex's grandfather was sent to a hospice here in the states, the entire staff was so loving and after he passed they did everything in their power to make sure in that moment it was the family that were comfortable. Tears were shed on both sides, we all shared stories and had great things to say about how uplifting his personality was and that day forward I was almost certain that Hospice nurses are angels on earth

Even if this is advertising it's still someone's personal story. Having had a similar experience I resonate deeply with what is said. We are still greatfull 3yrs later for the loving care our local hospice gave us. I love what is said about how the hospice provided a space for his family to make memories and focus on connecting. Yes, it's time to embrace death and not fear it.

Having worked in an acute hospital and a hospice as a registered nurse I just want to point out that a hospital is there to treat illness and injury in an acute setting and therefore regular monitoring is of paramount importance. A hospice is not a hospital and therefore it has a different way of approaching the needs of the patient, eg it focuses more on the comfort and emotional needs of the patient. The two levels of care cannot really be compared.

In Australia there are not many actual hospices, but our hospitals have Palliative Care wards attached to other wards and there are the Nursing Homes where some people come to to pass away from their illness, not necessarily older people who are expected to die. I have had great satisfaction over the years of being an RN who was able to spend time with people who were going to die and their families. It is an absolute privilege to care for someone and their families. I have very special memories of a lot of the people I helped care for. We have a very good "hospice at home " program too and my father was able to have my mum stay at home with him when she was dying of cancer and I was offered help when I was caring for my ex husbands dad until his death 2 months ago at the age of 97. I had been caring for him for years, but I really didn't need the extra help until the end and he passed of a severe stroke the day before we were going to engage the Palliative Care services. Each family is different. Some people simply aren't able to care for their loved one at home, while others feel better knowing that there are other people around at a moments notice. We all die and we can only die once and for that to be the best experience for everyone involved is THE most important thing, regardless of the place. I wish this man and his daughter's all the best for the future and I'm glad that this service was available to them.

Michele Sartori.. you sound like one of the beautiful people that took such wonderful care of my mum before she passed. Just minutes after mum died I heard one of her carers whisper to her "it's been an honor & a privellage to have met you" & kissed her on the forehead. That carer didn't know I was watching so I know it came from his heart & he didn't just say that for my benefit.... 12 months later I still think of him saying that & it makes me cry knowing mum was in such wonderful caring hands.. All carers have a special place in my heart.. angels on earth I think..

MIXHELE. MICHELLE..I’ve always found my mom’s relationship with my dad’s parents quite unique so when I read your comment, I felt compelled to comment. My mom and dad got divorced when I was 16 YO and I’m now 57 YO. In spite of their divorce, my mom continued to remain close to my dad’s parents and helped them a lot before she moved in with them and helped to take care of my grandfather until he passed away 20 years ago at age 86. Hospice was there towards the very end of his in-home care. My mom again moved in with my paternal grandmother In 2014 and took care of her until she passed away in 2016 at age 95. She wasn’t doing very well when my mom moved in with her so b/c of the TLC, I love to believe that my mom gave her almost 3 more years on this earth that she probably wouldn’t have had, otherwise. Plus, when my mom moved in with her, she took her own 94 year old mother with her, so she was taking care of both of my grandmothers. I have chronic back pain so my daughter and I helped out when we could. In fact, my daughter was very young but looked forward to spending the weekends with my mom and helping her. They were her great grandmothers and not every child has the privilege of knowing any of their great grandparents. I’ve always thought that experience will help her to be tolerant, understanding and sympathetic towards the elderly and/or sickly and currently she has ambitions of being a nurse. My paternal grandmother passed away the very next day after Hospice started their in-home care. Hospice played a huge roll in the home care of my maternal grandmother until she passed away in 2018 at 98.5 YO. Same with that of my father before passing away in 2019. IMO anyone who takes proper care of the elderly and/or sickly are heroes. It takes a LOT of dedication, patience and love and often times it seems as if the caregivers who sacrifice so much, get overlooked. It’s VERY tasking yet rewarding and when you look back you realize you wouldn’t change a thing!! Hospice is a wonderful organization. It takes a very special person to be a part of it and I’m so appreciative of those that are!!

I would love to see how many rooms have been able to be added to the facility that would have a great impact in the people actually seeing that they are truly using the donation for that purpose plus I think that every time that they have a patient that they are going to be able to get that privacy they have to take away enough as it is because I have been a nurse for people that have been in the hospital and they have been really trying to get that I hope that those young kids will be able to take and always remember that leaf was a little sign that they had a mom who they loved and lost so young.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss, but if it means anything, I don’t know whether you’re religious or not, I wasn’t very, but I died when I was 21, I’m now 49, even though that was a long time ago, I had a near death experience, and I got to see what awaits us on the other side. Your dear sweet wife will be with her family right now, and will be waiting for you when your time finally comes. I promise you that death is not an ending, but merely a transition into the next state of existence. It’s never good guy, only until we meet again. Ever since that first experience, I’ve undergone 33 more operations, and nearly died twice more. I’ve also lost several people I love during that time period, But having experienced what I did, while I’m still devastated, it gives me so much comfort and joy to know that I will see that they can, and that it’s not goodbye. I just hate being separated for such a long period of time, but love knows no boundaries, it is eternal, and absence truly does make the heart grow finder. God be with you and your family, My deepest sympathies, send all my love, compassion, and hopes for a brighter future for yourself, your beautiful family and your beautiful wife, who is not gone, just temporarily separated.
