To each their own, you can't go wrong with either but I have used both and I lean towards the Mossberg and prefer it for several reasons. Dual extractors for shells with the Mossberg where the Remington only has one, a solid barrel bolt lug lockup, I find the slide release more comfortable and not having to readjust the hand, the open shell feed for high-stress situations and another one that people often mistake for a defect is that the Mossberg has a bit of play in the forend which actually allows for easier cycling in any of the slightest misalignment problems with the slide arms. My friend's Remington has no play in the forend and on the outward appearance it would appear to be better built but the slightest misalignment problem with the slide rails caused a huge crack down the middle of the forend under normal cycling and he shelled out some serious money for his Remington while my Mossberg Maverick was only a couple hundred bucks. The one thing the Remington has the edge is the steel receiver but I'm not sure that it's really a deal-breaker. I actually prefer the Mossberg Maverick to the Mossberg 500 because it has the safety location on the trigger group like the Remington. I highly recommend polishing the internals of either with a felt wheel and polishing compound on a Dremel to eliminate any casting flashes to help with smoothness and reliability, remember smoothing instead of metal removal. Have fun and stay safe.
@harleyutterback821810 жыл бұрын
Hunter Jordan His was older the stock is still in pristine shape but the forend got a crack down the center from fatigue. Most Mossbergs have a little side to side play while the Remington is stiff. My understanding is that under any misalignment or malfunctions if it is forcibly racked that the tight tolerances place the stress on the forend. For an older shotty it's a reliable beauty with the exception of that.
@harleymichael8310 жыл бұрын
It's a somewhat common problem if you do a Google search. I don't think it''s just Remingtons I'm sure but any kind of wood forend but from what I understand the tight tolerances stress it a little more. Nothing to really sweat, all that much excuse for him to get a new furniture set for it. Still cycles really well although I did notice his action release is a little more difficult to depress than that of that of the Mossberg.
@harleymichael8310 жыл бұрын
Hunter Jordan In all honesty I think most modern pump shotguns are created equal in terms of reliability. Most of it just comes down to personal preference, I never understood why Remington didn't use the dual extractors. As a Mossberg fan one distinct advantage I think the Remington has is the steel receiver. One thing is for sure I trust a pump shotgun in a home defense situation more than a semi-auto just because they'll feed just about anything where some of the semi-autos seems a little more picky.
@harleymichael8310 жыл бұрын
The part I was referring to is the shell extractors that grab the shell out of the chamber not the elevator. The Remingtons only have one and the Mossberg has two.

Love you guys! Keep doing what you're doing. I've had an 870 for several years, bought a used Wingmaster from the 60s and the fit and finish on it is unbeatable as well as smoothness of action. The only issue I have with my 870 (Which Barry mentioned in a much earlier video) is that the ejector is not user serviceable. on the Mossberg 500 you can change the ejector yourself if it breaks. I agree with Barry, if you can afford it go with the 590A1. Over engineered and totally user serviceable

The only thing I don't understand about this is: How is it that the side eject option on the gun can give your position away, but an enormous blast from a double 0 buck shot round at 25 yards from a twelve gauge shotgun and the sound of re racking a new shell does not? Makes little sense to me.. I see this logic for rifles at moderate ranges but a shotgun? no way jose.. You pull that trigger and the whole world knows where your at.
@kevinharker7689 жыл бұрын
Maybe they mean it this way: You're in a hidden position and the intruder is around the corner from you or in the hallway, whatever the layout of the building is, and they can't find you. You fire a shot, it's loud, bad guy is still trying to find you and you rack the weapon. Say your she'll flies out the door or past a half wall and they spot it. I don't know. I now see your point clearer after writing this but he must've had a good reason to say it haha.

if you are inside a building with a lot of corridors and hallways, the gunshots will echo and it will be hard to distinguish exactly where it's coming from (especially with all the other gunfire). When the shell ejects you can see which way it flies from so you know which side they shooter is on. This is only applicable in the case that you are already detected, such as in a gun fight

having owned both and being left handed, i gotta say, the 870 takes the cake. i put my index finger on the lever and pull the trigger with my middle finger, no one shoots faster than me.
@Ephem1310 жыл бұрын
Well the fore grip release is only a consideration for first round, once it's been fired they release automatically. That being said I never have to change my natural hand position thus I have several accurate shots in a short amount of time. Speed does not win in life or death situations, the accurate shot wins. Not to mention you need to be deadly accurate with a shotgun in a home defense situation as the buckshot hasn't expanded more than a few inches.
@SynchronizorVideos10 жыл бұрын
You can put a reverse safety in a right-hand-ejecting 870, or you can just use the standard safety left-handed, it's not hard with practice. There are also fully-reversed left-handed 870 models.
@Ephem1310 жыл бұрын
***** All of witch is very, very true. The reasons I bring it up is left hand guns tend to cost more and why learn to practice something extra when you can avoid it all together. These two shotguns are so close in every category that it's going to be the little things that make a difference.
@usmcrvn6911 жыл бұрын
I have had both for many years and both are fine shotguns. The one negative of the Mossberg is the aluminum receiver. After some years of use a dent developed in the top of the receiver caused by the rim of the shell slamming up into it. This caused an occasional jam when cycling the action. A few minutes with my Foredom grinder smoothing the dent out cured the problem. The most outstanding feature of the 870 is that it has been made in a left hand version which us lefties appreciate.

I had a 1970s 870 Wingmaster with 28 inch non vent rib smooth-bore barrel and combat ringed fore-end. Threw a mag extension on it so it held 7+1 and I kept the barrel 28 inches. It was a big boy, very light recoil, and it was my go-to shotgun. Paid $100 bucks the day after I graduated High School, and I sold it last year to buy a pistol. It was the smoothest shotgun I've ever had/fired. That's out of Mossbergs, A Winchester 97, Stevens, and some lower end 12 gauges. Man I need to get another 1.
@CaeruleanWren10 жыл бұрын
I must admit, I find it interesting that the first two things he mentioned for ergonomics on the 870 are the two things I hate most about it. I can neither rack the first shell nor turn on the safety without moving my shooting hand. That's always seemed dumb to me. I thought that Mossberg just had a patent on the behind-the-guard action release until I learned that the 870 came before the 500. Besides those two things and the lift gate, I'd take either gun.

I think i understand his point with ejection. If the shell lands at your feet, it could land on your shoes or lightly on the carpet or whatever floor is below you. With the side eject, you launch the shell out of your way, possibly going around a corner or hitting the wall with the force of the ejector. The enemy also might see the shell fly

Well, my understanding is that it is hard to tell where a big blast came from indoors and in urban areas (places you would generally be using a shotgun) because of the way the sound bounces off of hard objects. A shell dropping does not have the same awesome concussion and its sound would be limited to a specific area. Now, that being said, I do agree we are splitting some hairs here.

The ultimate bottom eject shotgun, the Ithaca 37. Find an older Deerslayer 12 gauge or a Ithaca 37 DS police version with the longer magazine tube. I have had Ithaca's for years and they are tough as nails. I do have a Remington 870 for defense use these days and it will do everything the Mossberg wishes it could do, especially since mine is 30 plus years old and is steel. Of course I could have gotten a Mossberg 590 but I couldn't afford it so I snagged the 870, I got it used for what I would have paid for a Maverick 88.

It doesn't matter if you have a bottom eject or a side eject shotgun, it you want to eject a shell, you either have to fire and rack the slide (which is going to give your position away) or just rack the slide ( also giving your pos. away). I've got a Ithaca m37 featherlight and I'll tell you this, it's my favorite pump shotgun. It has a smaller tube capacity, but it's light, exceptionally solid (no shake or rattle at all) the sights are good and the ergonomics are fantastic, especially for people who like a slightly tighter gun. I had a 870 and a 500 before I received the m37 bequeathed to me by my uncle and the m37 handling is simply superior. A bottom eject has many advantages over a side eject that they haven't mentioned.

I have to say the tang safety for me is much better than a cross bolt one. And a bottom ejecting/loading shotgun would be much slower to feed and run and gun with compared to a side loader. You can't chuck a shell in and feed as you go or throw a different type of shell in ie: a slug. Hence why they aren't as common.

Have you heard anything about the freedom group producing crappy 870's now. There are tons of videos on here with failure to extract. I wish it werent true but there are lots of forums online discussing the QC of Remington now. Too bad

I'm into Martial Arts and what this video tells me is if I had the choice between those 2 shotguns for home defense is that I would choose the Remington 870 first then Mossberg 500 second. If I had to use the shotgun as my striking weapon other than a shooting weapon then I would choose the Remington for its rigidity and component strength. Then, I can choose to use myself as a weapon, shotgun as a striking tool, and then still shoot it after I bashed someone's face with it. I didn't know about the plastic trigger group and this made my decision so much easier. Thanks for the video. I'll get the Mossberg 500/590 as my secondary because my Family means more to me than a weapon that has a potential to break in physical encounters. BTW, I'm getting both
@tonyrogo2275 жыл бұрын
Your logic is flawed and I could give a shit if you know martial arts or not. I'd take the shotgun that's more reliable PERIOD. That would be the mossy. Your idiotic post belongs in a B rated action flick. Not a real life situation . Try better internet tough guys😉.

I'm a lefty, and I have a Mossberg 590M full-size 12ga., and I also have a Mossberg 590M Shockwave 12ga., (the "M" stands for "Magazine" fed). I replaced the plastic safety buttons with metal one's from Brownells, and I've not had a problem with either of them (not that I'd ever had a problem before, but ... better safe than sorry). I have the original 10 round magazines that came with both, AND, I also have a 20 round magazine for both ... the 20 round magazines are just INSANE, lol. I also installed a "LS-250G Crimson Trace Shotgun Lasersaddle with Ambidextrous Control", on both 590M's. It brought my accuracy with the Shockwave up 100% since I fire the Shockwave from the hip as it has no stock, so shoulder firing is NOT an option. I use the Shockwave as my home-defense shotgun, loaded up with 2 3/4' 00 Buck, 8 shot. (The magazines are chambered for 2 3/4' ONLY)

Biggest difference is the lift gate on the Remington. If a shell gets under it, you are screwed. If you have ever had to disassemble your 870 while hunting due to a shell stuck under the gate, you know what I'm talking about. Or, if you've seen guys slamming the butt stock on the ground trying to force the shell to load. I've seen guys grind a slot in the gate so they could get a pocket knife in there to push the shell froward when it happens. Kind of a pain when hunting. Would be a disaster during a home defense situation. The flexi tab modification is Remington's attempt to fix this, and it is much better than the old system. But, the Mossberg avoids the whole problem with the open system it uses. This one difference, alone, precludes the Remington from home defence, in my opinion. Everything else is just personal preference. But, if you just absolutely have to have a Remington, make absolute sure you have one of the new ones with the flexi tab. I also don't like adding a tube extension to the Remington to increase capacity. The joint, where the extension mets the tube is an opportunity for a problem. Shells can, and sometime do, hang up there. The 8 shot Mossberg uses a solid tube with no such joint. I, like a lot of people, own both. I hunt with the 870 because it's pretty. But, I keep a 590 by my bed. Just my opinions.
@chriscat8510 жыл бұрын
Look, I'm not bad mouthing the 870. But this is not a rare event. Guys used to cut a slot in them so they could get a pocket knife in there when it happened. I've seen it happen several times. Try it sometimes. I hunt with a 870, cause it is pretty. But I would never keep a 870 for defensive purposes.
@chriscat8510 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But just for the experience of it, try it. Load the gun and don't push the shell all the way forward. In other words, force this situation. See how easy it is to do and how hard it is to fix when it happens. You can do it by short stroking the action too. Again, I'll say I sometimes hunt with an 870 wing master. Very nice gun. But if it happens while I'm in the field, I can dissemble the gun and fix it. I've done it. Worst thing is I might waste a little time. I can't imagine doing this in my bedroom while someone was breaking into my house. And, by the way, I have been in that situation. I've been asleep when two punks kicked in my door. I met them with a mossberg 590. Didn't have to fire it, thank God. But the gun chambered a round with no problems. They went to jail for 3 years, nobody got hurt, and I still rethink what could have happened. Would have an 870 served the same purpose? Sure, but after seeing 870's disabled with a shell under the lift gate several times over the last 30 years, I'll stick with the Mossberg. Again I'll say, if you are going to depend on an 870, at least make sure you have one of the newer ones with the flexi tab system. And actually practice this malfunction a couple times. Even with the flexi tab system, it is more difficult than you might expect.
@SynchronizorVideos10 жыл бұрын
That shell-over-carrier malfunction was only a problem with the older 870s. Remington engineered a fix in the mid-80s that solved the problem. If you have an older gun, you can order the updated parts and drop them in very easily.
@chriscat8510 жыл бұрын
No, remington "improved" the situation in the mid 80's with the flexi tab system. It still does not prevent the problem. It provides a method of working around these jams using force. Much better than the old system, to be sure, but they did not eliminate the problem. To " fix" the problem, they would have to adopt Mossbergs system, or something like it. The conversion parts you speak of are upwards of $100 plus shipping when you can find them. And that's if you can do the work yourself. Replacing the lift gate itself involves messing with the trigger assembly and may be a little more than some people want to tackle. Cheaper to just sell the 870 and buy a Mossberg. But, if you are absolutely determined to keep an old 870 as your home defense gun, I would definitely spend the money for the flexitab conversion. Now, again, I'll say, this is only a big problem in self defense situations. In a hunting or clay shooting situation, it is just a minor inconvenience and absolutely no reason to replace or modify a high end wingmaster. My advise, keep the 870 for show when hunting. It is an excellent gun. But buy a Mossberg for the bedroom. A 590A1 if you can afford it, but a 500 will work fine if you are on a budget. Just my opinion though.
@spacepope879 жыл бұрын
I've had problems with a Mossberg 500 that just wouldn't feed. When ever you would pump, the shell would fall out. Nutnfancy has a video where the 590 has nothing buy light primer strikes. All shotguns can have problems. The Mossberg's have this myth about them vastly superior to an 870. It is NOT the AK of the shotgun world as most like to think.

great vid! I prefer the Mossberg for 2 reasons: as a lefty, the crossbolt safety on the 870 doesn't work well for me, so I love the 500's top safety! I also like the flush shell loading, very easy to load with gloves on. I love Remington too (my favorite hunting gun is a Remington 1100 12 ga!) and would trust my life to either of these guns, but for me the Mossys are my favorite. I shot my 1st squirrel w/ a 20 Ga 500, and I'm bout to get a 2 barrel 500 HD/hunting combo w/ a 18.5" & a 28" barrels

***** It's not simply about what's cheapest. It's about economical AND durable. Mossbergs are like the AKs of the shotgun world. They have higher tolerance, less precision, which is exactly what makes them so popular for so many different organization.
