I'm 66....My dad and his brother bought their dad a 12 gauge Model 31 in 1947. They had his name engraved on the side. I have no idea how many rabbits and squirrels that gun put on the table. LOTS! I still have it. Gold bead front sight. I rub a little linseed oil into the stock and remember getting to go rabbit hunting with dad, grandpa, and uncle Chuck. Dad used an Ithaca Featherlite Model 37, 16 gauge. He was left handed and liked the bottom ejection of the Ithaca. I have that one too......... Love the old shotguns...just metal and good wood. Thanks for sharing!

Looks Amazing and it seems it has at least 90% of the Original finish left. Quality from back in the days. Wood and Steel at it's finest.

if you have 3 letters on the barrel , the first represents the month and the second or second together with the third is the year. I think you have two u's making it 1949. If the first letter is a "P" , I can't tell for sure , then its june. I have a 12 gauge with a Heter's adjustable choke made in 1948. I'm so impressed with the qaulity of these shotguns. Remington didn't cheap out on the walnut either -very nicely figured and I see where they compared it to a ball bearing like action. Cool video and enjoy that slice of American craftsmanship of a bygone era.

I have one in 16 and 20. They’re very well built. It’s my favorite pump
@earlgateman375510 күн бұрын
Best pump ever made. It's basic design goes back to John Browning. Some modification of the model 17 by Remington engineers ( which incidentally became the Ithaca 37) to make it a side ejector. It ended up being incredibly smooth. It was advertised as the "ball bearing" action. It's been copied by High Standard and Mossberg, maybe others, but none were as smooth as the original.

The date code is on the left side of the barrel near the receiver, should be two to three letters, and possibly a symbol. Mine is from Aug. 1933. I can see the code at the 32 second mark in your video but can't read it.

I couldn't tell from the video but if your trigger guard overlaps into the stock it's most likely from the 40s older ones don't overlap.

Question - I got held up by 5 masked guys breaking into my house while I was home!!!! YUP! Cops told me to buy a pump action shot gun. Would you recommend this shotgun for home protection? I see you put 3 rounds in it - how many does it actually hold?

My Model 37 couldn’t hold a candle to a JC Higgins M20. There’s no comparing the two honestly. Edit: hold a candle in the sense of smoothness in the actions.

Remington 31 is a great shotgun. High standard copy the action then Mossberg copy the action. Never buy a Mossberg the parts are made in Mexico they are just assembled in America that's why they're cheap.
