Remington Model 58 O-ring Trials

Here we are trying to find the best remedy for a sick 1956 Remington Sportsman 58 by replacing the worn out fore-end ring washer with a hardware store bought o-ring. We have some replacement washers on the way from an eBay seller but this one-ring option was available first so we are giving it a try. We also replaced the fore end ring with Remingtons upgraded part to help save the washer.
So we tried out the o-ring with 4 rounds of trap on a 90 degree day where I was on the line alone so we got the gun nice and hot. I wasn’t really worried about the o-ring sealing, I was more worried about it melting from the heat so these conditions were perfect for this test.

Look at getting some "cannon plug pliers", its like a channel lock but with soft plastic jaws. They are made to take apart milspec circular connectors without damage.

I had a pair of those a long time ago and I found they slipped too much on metal for jobs like this.....for me, a strip of leather was my go to tool with the slip joint pliers shown. Can't find that piece of leather, need to make a new one.

Success! First off you survived the experiment. Congratulations. Always the first goal. It looked like it was safe enough and would work, the only question is for how long before wear begins to show. So far so good. It's gotta feel good to improvise a repair like this while you wait for the other gasket.

How do the O-rings compare to those on the Rem. 1100? Some consider them the Achille's heel of the 1100, but I have not found them to be fragile or short-lived - although I do not shoot as often as you do.

They last an amazingly long time and if you use a quality part are not at all fragile. I remember first seeing this design years ago and thinking to myself that it will be annoying to have to replace that thin o-ring all the time......and in actuality they last forever.
