This video came in very handy, perfect actually. Replaced the ribbon on my Remington: Quiet-Riter. Only difference on mine, there was no circular insert ring, none on the left or right side at all. So, I used the trick from this video and used both of the ink ribbon stops (rivets) as a little anchor to slip into the ribbon holder. Works like a charm!

I've always done a hand-wind swap to replace Remington ribbons. Everything on one side, wind old ribbon off to extra empty spool, wind the new ribbon on, reconnect. 🤷 Note, the reason that he cut the eyelet out of the one side is because it will interfere with the ribbon reverse. It will want to come out of the spool area as expected but then jam up against either the guide at the spool or the ribbon lifter before the ribbon comes away from the core of the spool and keep the reverse arm from dropping. So if you don't cut the eyelet out, you don't reverse. Your ribbon just stops moving.

I just got a 1957 Quiet-Riter. Tried putting the universal spools in with the plugs out, probably doing something wrong, machine was unhappy. I thought it would accept the universal spools but maybe not. Put the faded ribbon back in (have both metal sleeves), machine much happier. Guess I need a new ribbon. Got the tab set/clear working again, cleaned a farm’s worth of dirt out of it. Comb on right side pinched, unpinched it. Like it a lot. It is quiet.

Took the all black ribbon I had on the Royal metal spools in my QDL and wound it into my new QR, have both rings so cut the eyelets off so there’s no going back. 1 ribbon on universal spools is now shared by 3 other machines.

I'm glad I watched this before spending almost $40 on a special Remington ribbon. I'll buy the generic replacement ribbon (for $10) instead and wind it on myself using your instructions. Thank you!

Some corrosion spots are not reversible, shift on these machines has never been a trouble area, no video . . . .

Have you noticed the carriage lock on these Quiet Riters working itself loose when carried around in their case? Appreciate your videos, btw

Yes the carriage lock has a poor design indeed, I didn't try, but maybe finding the right size rubber band to connect to it & a mounting location might be necessary.
