Using an actual bandolier or belt, instead of a pouch, would probably help decrease his load times.

+Conroy Paw it used to be common practice to hold spare ammo for upcoming shots between the fingers of one hand.
@conroypaw8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, absolutely, but I end up fumbling more rounds than I can actually chamber. I'm pretty sure that it could be done effectively with a lot more practice. However, I've found that a bandolier or cartridge belt is quicker from the get go. I haven't seen any period pictures of soldiers (or bandits for that matter) using that technique, but I have seen them with cartridge belts and bandoliers, and there's no reason why they can't use both to speed up reload times.

@@tfbtv have you ever thought of doing a running gun with the Winchester model 1866 and 73? Extraordinary rifles for the time. And they also came in military versions called Winchester muskets.(idiots in charge of the US military never adopted them.) have you ever thought of doing a running gun on those firearms especially the military versions seeing a Winchester live action rifle with a bayonet that would be sweet.
@andrewromig97538 жыл бұрын
It's been obvious to me for quite some time that the Remington Rolling Block is one of the fastest single-shot designs out there, however, there USED to be one that was faster. The original Browning-designed Winchester 1885 High/Low Walls had a lever-actuated falling block extremely similar to the Sharps pattern, but when you inserted the cartridge and lifted the block back up, it would automatically cock the hammer, and be immediately ready to fire. Apparently even in the late 1800s idiots and litigation existed in the world of guns, and after a few years Winchester decided to change the design so that the hammer no longer automatically cocked and thus had to be pulled separately prior to firing, eliminating almost all of its' speed advantage. It saddens me greatly that despite three different companies all making versions of the 1885 today, none have duplicated John Browning's original kick-ass design. :(

What a miracle that this good weapon never became a weapon of the US army, but was sold in very large quantities to the army of Tsarist Russia as well as the Balkans and Ottoman armies, it is also interesting that the Winchester lever action rifle (66s and 73s) was sold 10,000s of times to the Ottoman army and police . But the biggest cliché is that a large part of the Spanish soldiers and their sympathizers used this Remington Rolling Block rifle against the US soldiers in the American Spanish / Filipino war.

That was very educational as a real world demonstration. I saw a written reference to 10 rounds in 60 seconds being an average rate of fire. This helps validates why the RRB was such a long lived rifle. While 10 rnd/min isn't amazing compared to 15 rnd/min from a bolt action with stripper clips, the entire action of reloading is much more ergonomically fluid than I expected. The simplicity of the RRB is easy to appreciate on paper, but the smoothness of a speed reload needs to be witnessed.

IMHO one of it's biggest advantages over falling-block rifles is that you don't have to thumb in the cartridge completely. It can stick out a couple of millimeters and the lock will seat it as it rolls up.

Alex, those RBs are sweet! I have a pair , both in 7x57, one rifle, and a carbine. The only bummer about them is the carbine. With a 17 1/2 inch barrel, the carbine kicks like a mule. But, both are accurate enough for "sharpshooter" work, and one or the other often goes hunting with me.

Place rounds between the fingers of the off hand. This will allow for faster reloading. Also, you can keep your eyes up, watching for targets, instead of losing cheek weld by looking and reaching down on every reload.

Nice video. It just depends on what you're practiced up on, as to how fast you can shoot it accurately. A fella I used to know had a war trophy Martini/Henry, in .303 Brit., that he became quite fast with, and would have given you a run for your money, with. The Sharps was never intended for fast fire power. It was intended for targets out past Ft. Mudge, so you didn't have to prove your action was faster than the other guys. In short, the Sharps was intended to start work at say, 200yds. and still be a viable tool out to 1200yds. and more. i have seen this with my own eyes, and have done it as well. Keep up the good work.
