Hi Paul, hope I don’t ramble on. Two things: 1) I’ve found that Rem green box (soft points) shoots better than anything else I’ve tested in my Rem700. Never discount “old fashioned” stuff when sighting in. 2) this won’t pertain necessarily to this test - I’ve trained myself to automatically count rounds. Unconsciously I count rounds online, at the shooting range, commercials, movies, TV shows, what have you. I’m not always 100% right but I’m a lot closer than most. Except for machine guns - usually have to guess on those. I get a lot of practice on KZbin. It’s just a reflex action now. Love your channel!

*What a treat - two in one day. I WISH he would talk about his grip and hold. I note that he does not press his left thumb way forward down the slide like so many guys tell us. But given his numerous marksmanship awards, I would like to see HIS approach!!!*
@saviostrawn87376 жыл бұрын
Julian 3 Thumbs forward is a modern approach. A more target style grip is offhand thumb tip barely touching the trigger guard and strong hand thumb not touching the gun at all. Strong hand index finger tip (the pad of the last section) centered on the the trigger. I learned both being in the military during the transition from practicool to tacticool. I suspect Paul uses more of a target stance than modern combat stance.

I've seen you shoot Remington Green and White box so I went out and bought some for my Ruger 9E. When I started this video I paused it and went to look at my Remington Green and White box and sure enough it was Remington UMC ammo! So I pressed play on the video and watched anxiously as you tested each ammunition. Whew! So glad UMC faired well against G&R. This is why I come to your channel! The honest and good-natured reviews and advice you offer is refreshing and endearing. Thank you so much for all you do! P.S. I also have a Remington Model 11 20 gauge semi-auto shotgun. I was shooting at the range and I was curious and I had a box of the green and white box 45 ACP 230 grain FMJ. I don't have a chronograph but I could tell the difference in them. The green and white box seem to be a little hotter then the UMC.

I'm really glad you did this video last fall. Today I was at my local gun shop to purchase some cheap range ammo for a day of shooting with my niece whom I see about once a year. Cases of the UMC were well stocked and inexpensively priced. This was not the case for regular G&W box or HTP. I was purchasing the 9x19mm 124gr FMJ and 38 Spl 130gr FMJ with flat point. I have no idea what Remingtons business plan is for this stuff. I do still have some old yellow box UMC ammo that I've fired a fair bit of over the years.

Any chance we'll see super-cheap ammo testing? Like Blazer and Tula aluminum/steel case stuff? Testing possible chamber-fouling issues might not be feasible with your usual round counts, but it would be nice to see if there are significant consistency issues.
@PaulHarrell6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good topic for a video. Ammo that's good for plinking in the sense of "bang for your buck"
@hoovdaddy05056 жыл бұрын
I second that! My shooting buddy always provides the ammo and he likes to use Tula. He calls it the "Vladimir Putin special." I really don't love running it through my gun, but I've never been one to pass on free ammo either 😅 Other than it being dirty we've never had a problem.
@tackytrooper6 жыл бұрын
In my experience Wolf steel case and Federal Champion Aluminum have been solidly reliable, while Tula has had a dismal track record. That is of course discounting mag feeding issues, which I find tend to plague steel case ammo disproportionately regardless of brand. After I got a really blatant hangfire (the first of my life) shooting Tula 7.62x39, I vowed never to buy the stuff again.
@CrysResan6 жыл бұрын
I had a bad time with the tula 9 mm. Only used one box but that's enough for me. Tons of failures to fully eject, and I had to clean my pistol twice to get all the crap out. I think some of it I heard was the 9 mm loadings are underpowered more than ti being steal cased or such though. It also smelled bad firing it. I was half wondering if it was black powder it smelled so much like sulfur.

Back in the mid 1990's when I first got into collecting and shooting firearms I used to buy the yellow box UMC for range shooting all the time and never had any issue's in 9mm, .357 mag, .44 mag and .45 ACP that I can remember now. It was all FMJ. A couple of years ago when I had an armed security contract job and was carrying my 92FS I used Winchester white box 115 gr FMJ for range ammo.
@roykiefer77136 жыл бұрын
Paul, THANK YOU, I really enjoyed this video and found it to be both valuable and instructional. That’s because I buy a lot more “practice and plinking” FMJs than I purchase “defensive” hollow points (and, I’d speculate my experience isn’t at all unusual). We all enjoy debating whether Gold Dots are superior to V-Crowns, to HSTs, to Golden Sabres, to T series Rangers, and so forth. HOWEVER - over the course of many years - we probably spend a LOT more money buying ordinary range and “woods walking” rounds than defensive loads (both “hyper” and less-hyped). I know I do. So, THANK YOU; I believe this KZbin helps to fill an important, if largely unnoticed, gap. In fact, I’d suggest you expand this “ordinary fodder” analysis. Your Remington versus Remington demonstrations were great, but how about Remington Green and White (and/or UMC) versus Winchester White Box, Federal American Eagle, CCI/Speer brass (perhaps aluminum, too) Blazer, Magtech, S&B (which, incidentally, I really like), PMC, Fiocchi . . . this list is near-endless. Normally - due to post-kids downsizing, I no longer reload - I treat all of these sorts of decent quality FMJs as essentially equal, and I then buy whatever is least expensive in thousand round lots. But, were I to learn that, for example, American Eagles and S&B were generally better than their competition, it would be helpful. V/R.
@submanusn36926 жыл бұрын
I like Geco, S&B, Federal Aluminum (in 45acp), Blazer Aluminum in 38sp. Heck, even the Armscor in 380 has performed well for me. Don't like it in 22 though.Also 10 Ring ammo seems to work just fine for practice (Outdoor Limited).

I'm not even particularly a gun person and I enjoy your videos; informative, well put together, amusing (when intentionally so!) and, obviously, sourced from a great deal of experience. If time ever permits, and interest is sufficient motivation, I'd love to see a video with your thoughts on the post-heist shootout in the 1995 film Heat. I know it's a little trivial, as your previous videos of that type have been based around real life events, but the scene has apparently been used as a tutorial by law enforcement and armed forces as the correct way to retreat under fire. If nothing else, it's an excuse to watch what is, in my humble, one of the greatest films made in the last fifty years. Either way, keep up the good work. Cheers from England! :)

Apologies if I am simply missing it, but I am not aware of a video where you test the penetration and expansion of the UMC… I typically carry Remington green and white box 115 grn JHP, but that’s not always available -I’ve found that UMC is regularly available where I shop. It would be great to know if the 115 grn UMC JHP is a viable/interchangeable carry round when the typical green and white box isn’t available.

I was doing the "hyper" ammo and it became "precious" (if you don't know what I mean, search Paul's video on hyper ammo) I was emptying the precious from my magazines, loading cheap target ammo, then after I cleaned my firearm I would load the precious back into the magazines. So I was carrying 147 gr Hornady +P hollow points, training with 115 gr Winchester FMJ ball ammo. It was a complete different feel and performance. Just to save a few bucks. No longer. The precious is in Mt. Doom now, all I carry is the Remington Green & White FMJ hollow points. Now, the Hornady is a kick ass round, don't misunderstand me. But they're a $1 a bullet. If you can afford it, train and carry it. But us less than wealthy shooters can have good performance at a decent price with the Remington G&W box

@@PaulHarrell Well generally you would buy the size of target that is challenging at the distance and with the weapon you are shooting. Those huge targets are probably for shotgun slugs or pistols at 50-100yds. For rifles I would consider these to be 500yd+ targets and they look similar to the ones used in the ELR [Extreme Long Range] rifle competitions for the 2 mile championship.
