i miss the visual flare of the movement physics in 1.0. but even back then, it resulted in people dying to AOE that they simply couldn't move out of in time, especially on the extreme mode ifrit later implemented which had most of his moves from 2.0 in a more simplified form. (this was also when primal weapons were introduced and were some of the best stuff in the 1.0 game's arsenal) Glad it's gone, miss the prettiness of it.

It's interesting that Revenant's Toll that started on 2.0 was basically just aetherite crystal and wasn't much more than original camp, but now it's a huge fortress constantly filled with players. Not to a degree of capitals but it's still large enough to be called a fortress town.

Old ass comment but realism isn't something to be seen as an ideal to reach lmfao It's just a visual styling. It'd be like saying that painting is superior to sketching or wood carving. It's not, it's just another style. It's so silly to adore realism like this lol
@Boyzby
@Boyzby Жыл бұрын
@@YaMamasAss They're not talking about the art style, they're talking about the animations-which is instantly noticeable jump in quality when you watch them. Also, if realism is just another style, why can't they adore it? In your example, it's like saying no one can love wood carvings or have it as their favorite style.

if I remember right, there technically was a sprint in 1.0. It was one of the skills you bought with Guild Marks, pretty sure it was from Archer. Made you run faster with your weapon out. Of course, it was phased out when Guild Marks were, when the battle system was reworked a little to let you pull your weapon out while moving and such.

I feel like that is the illusion they are trying to give, but in reality the retainers you see aren't linked to any player. They are just npcs that have a chance to spawn, do their little retainer act, and vanish.

Actually there's a way for people to see your retainer. Its possible to see another player's retainer when they're out gathering in the field. And I believe they're getting more features in the future so its not really pointless. On top of that I'd take any customization I can get that's never a bad thing.

That's what I don't get about 2.0 . The CSs actually look a bit better in 1.0 . Or at least the performance is. In 2.0 you often see the suggestion of an animation followed by a cut and then the end (like someone kneeling before a jump and then standing someplace else after the cut without you seeing the actual jump). That actually happened quite a lot in 2.0 . 3.0 got way better with that.
@ishashobar

The old movement physics are actually still in 2.0, albeit in a limited fashion, as animations. They are used in certain cutscenes throughout the main story. They aren't used all the time, since many cutscenes use new mo-cap animations instead of stock ones. The scene of Urianger and WoL running to check Minfillia in the solar ( back in 2.1) is a good example.

Interesting to note: The movement physics are still somewhat in play. I've noticed it on male Lalafell anyway. I haven't figured out what causes it, as it isn't always there, though. SOMETIMES when I start walking (normal "jog" speed, non-sprint but full control stick on my controller), my character's torso will lean in more, like you do when starting to run, straightening up after the first few steps. The thing is, it doesn't do this all the time. What I mean is, sometimes when you start walk/jogging like this, it will do it. Other times, it goes straight into the more straightened jogging animation. It doesn't seem to be based on direction (at first I thought it was when I did a 180 by starting to walk in the opposite direction my character was facing while standing still - but no, that isn't it), speed, or anything else. Were I to hazard a GUESS, I'd guess it has to do with server ticks somehow. Like if you start walking just AFTER a server tick, it does this as a transition animation until the server tick completes (~3 sec), but if you're walking after so much of the server tick has gone by, it doesn't do it. ...but that is entirely just a guess on my part (I know JUST enough about programming and computer code to be dangerous and little more... :) . EDIT: Somehow I'm back here after 3 years (Hello from January 2023!) but I also found another way to do this. Pull out an umbrella from Fashion Accessories. Now start walking at normal run/job speed (non-RP walk, non-Sprint, just normal "standard" speed). Now, press the button to put away your umbrella while you continue to walk. Did you see that? Your character did the same little dash/jolt thing leaning forward before transitioning to normal jog posture. Unlike the other one, which seems to be random, this seems to be something I can invoke whenever just by doing that. Funny how it's still in the game. One of the most interesting things about watching FFXIV 1.X stuff is how the characters seem to have actual weight and mass to their movements. It's interesting that a piece of that is still there in the gamecode, even interacting with new systems like the umbrella (which uses mount code; kinda makes me wonder if it does this when dismounting and I just never noticed...)

@@nnymeia7663 well, it seems to be a remnant of the old physics engine/code. It IS kind of cool, since it's a LITTLE more realistic physics/model, and it doesn't happen all the time. Just kind of a fun little Easter Egg that pops up from time to time out of the legacy code to say hi. :)

I do miss the old movement physics, I would be happy for their return. Even though the combat was slower, there was an upside to it, you could actually communicate with other people in combat, kinda like how you could in XI too. One complaint some people have about DF runs is the only communication is pretty much "Hi" and "Bye". The faster combat is very much a part of that. While I do agree that button mashing is fun at times, so is being able to talk a little too.

Personally, I'd love it if they could keep the old motion physics when out of battle and switch to the current one as soon as you enter battle. That way you get the best of both worlds. I don't care as much about having "weight" to my character when I'm focusing on a fight as when I'm just walking around or hanging out.
@TheLuckyDingo
@TheLuckyDingo 7 жыл бұрын
burchdc Yeah, that would be amazing. There was just something about those physics that made the game much more satisfying, and less static World of Warcraft feeling... Although, if I had to choose between the newer combat mechanics of the pugilists and the old movement physics, I would stick with the new combat, hands down. I'm only level 28, but having to manage between which side of the enemy I'm on for each ability in my chain makes the gameplay soooo satisfying! I played the game when it first launched on PC for a bit, and became too frustrated with it (I can't zoom in and out of the map, seriously?), but I just jumped into a Realm Reborn on PS4 recently and I've been having a blast!

I don't condemn retainer creation. This is a game where one invests time in making himself happy, be it with his appearance or with the appearance of his retainers. I assert that there is nothing wrong and everything right with being able to customize this! I agree with you that the loss of motion physics was a step in the right direction. Function over form, and some of the trials are quite a bit of fun! As for Camp Revenant's Toll, I used to see it pretty much every day doing Ixal quests. Great way to get pre-50 crafter experience.

There are fast paced mmo's that have movement physics that does not restrict combat. The real underlying factor was once again PS3 i'm sure. those extra movement physics probably destroyed the the few mbs of memory it had left after the zone loaded. They could definitely work that back into the game if they cared to. Also if im not mistaken there are a lot of textures or graphics from 1.0 that seem to be a lot better.

I do wish tho certain areas like that camp or other places would see a resurgance in use. It's weird that some areas you've discussed in other videos seem to have been the parts in 1.x that were what it got right even if they may have needed tweaks for how they made the game work in 2.x and beyond. I'm certain I just need to wait further in HW(or whenever I can finally upgrade since I wanted to do it before EW's release but that didn't happen because funds were tight....). Just some expansions on the Gelmorra lore and allowing us that didn't exist in 1.x days to see some of that would be great. It's not just for lore reasons. It's to A) keep starter city areas populated and B) not crowd the end game areas to the point of congestion. I remember Mor Dhona was horrible to go through at times because, even though I was not in the camp area, everyone idling in that area made some things a bit sluggish. It's why Idylshire is not in the same zone as the Hinterlands.

The better movement physics shouldnt be dependant on the actual speed the character moves. Image the "Character" is just a dot on a grid. This dot would start and stop instantly when movement applied. This single point would also be where attacks are registered. If they hid the dot when moving with fancier movements it would appear physics are in place, without actually being there. That is how it appears in 1.0 at least. When i see someone moving i dont see the camera gradually getting up to speed, which would mean the acceleration of abovementioned dot would be like in 2.0.

was more like a split second "ramp up" and was specially noticeable on mouse turning. Still to be fair part of the reason dodging was so tedious was the server structure too, 1.0 primals you saw a skill you were going to eat it, you had to preemptively start to move. Overall I don't mind the liberties they take to make things "smoother" like the hiding of auto attacks in order to show the full animation of skills etc.
@AegisVS

Was thinking the exact same thing. In the current version of the game, we have things like a Dark Knight skating across the ground while still in a Power Slash animation, yet they couldn't make the motion physics animation from 1.0 independent from the characters actual position like we have now? Not really buying the 'it's because we have faster combat' argument on this one.

Aegis i enjoy the movement physic in 1.0. 2.0 is like everyone sketing on the ground. and i don't agree movement physic should be remove just because we need to dodge enemy area attack. in 2.0 i think 95% of times we can dodge the enemy attack, this dodging doesnt makes me feel challenging or intense, instead i feel quite bored and getting a bit annoying. if 2.0 can have movement physic, not only we can enjoy a more realstic ff14, but also the dodging become a bit more challenging as which direction we are heading is matter

To each their own but the dodging in some of the fights and mixing in my rotations and other responsibilities in the fights are intense and challenging for me.

I suspecte retainer customization is a by product of system reuse, instead of creating a whole new retainer system they simply reused the character system, this likely either was influenced by, and/or influenced, the retainer venture system

Garlean storylines ALWAYS confused me... it's... I am a prime example of new player who had NO idea about history/anything/nada. I can tell you this; it was confusing as HELL from get-go what they were talking about, until I watched YOUR documentary (Fallen and rise??) And bam... but Garlean part still confused me, I shuld restart and play over again x_x Also, I use retainers appearance function to pre-make new look/new actual character with nicer glam......Yes I have an empty retainer slot just to edit something I could at start of game.. But... I don't feel it has the feel of it, unlike, when doing retainer..OK I sound weird - OUTFITS MATTER...

Speaking of Retainers, can I ask WHY the storage is tied to the retainers??? This is a FFXIV feature that really baffled me. Why didn't they just give us a box to put our stuff in? Then Retainers could still be useful for selling your wares, go adventuring, and look good as your waifu / hasubando. This is made worse when they decided to monetize for more retainers, spiking up the monthly subscription. Obviously, the initial 350 items (175 per retainer) won't be enough especially if you're a multi-crafter and the fact that HQ items need a separate slot from its NQ ones.

@Kylesico912x 7 жыл бұрын
I think it is to give them more of a use besides selling things. In 1.0 if I recall correctly, you had no ways of storing items outside of the armoire for specific items. We even had less room for storing things back then so crafting was a even more of a nightmare on top of the usual nightmare it already was. We had 200 inventory space with no armory chest, meaning it was very likely for a crafter to run out of space.

TO me, retainers not having much to do and lack of storage space are two different problems. Retainers have ventures now, which was something 1.0 didn't have. Plus they could be chosen to loiter around the House. I think those are sufficient enough functions for the retainer so Storage can be its own thing.

It's not even being able to design a retainer that's dumb, its the whole system. The game should let you post on the market board by interacting with the market board, just seems like one of those systems that is deliberately way more confusing than it needs to be.

Can you please explain what the "rarity" thing means?
@SpeakersNetwork
@SpeakersNetwork 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes I can. It's actually a bit of a... "remnant of a show". In the planning stages and the first pilot (not the one on KZbin) the rarity was supposed to go from A-F based on how easy it was to find/access the location or how rarely the feature was used or mentioned in the game, with a more in-depth explanation of the rating coming up a the end of each segment. But it was decided that it was just too much to do and too much useless information for the viewer, so it was dropped. I forgot to remove the rarity rating on the first proper episode uploaded to KZbin, so I just kept it there >-< the rating still works though, A-F based on availability and access.

It's not true that the movement physics slowed your character down. Dodging AoEs was hard in 1.0 not because of how your character moved but because of how the servers detected the movement of your characters. ARR had the exact same problem when it launched and it was fixed when they decided to scrap all the old servers and replaced the entire server structure of FFXIV in 2.1/2.2. When ARR launched they massively underestimated how popular the game would become. The game became profitable only 6 months after launch when the team originally thought they would break even around the first year anniversary of the game. The movement physics only gave the illusion that your character had weight. Underneath it the characters move about the same as ARR. There is a bit of extra locomotion with the movement though which cause involuntary movement at undesirable moments.

Movement physics T^T Oh how much I miss you~ That's literally the only thing I can't get over. Other things were dear to me and I didn't mind them getting abolished as much. I love fights in which the devs make us dance through all the AoEs nowadays, but I'd give all of that up in a heartbeat if we could get movement physics back. The game feels like plastic, fake and as if the characters are jumping around on a gummy ballon and it bothers me so much that nothing else can really be enjoyable because of that lack of "weight".

The thing with weight animations is that you could perfectly have such animation in our current game, cuz that animation has nothing to do with the actually server checks for positioning. The speed at which your "character position" moves has nothing to do with the animations your characters has. Graphics and animations have always been one of the weak points of the game, probably the sacrifice needed to be able to be across so many diferent platforms. That animation at the begining and end of movement could perfectly work in the current game, is just an animation. As long as the position of your character is checked at our current speed (1.5 seconds). I love to see those textures and models, wish Stormblood now working exclusively on 64 bit clients and without the PS3 can bring a bit of much needed graphical improvements to the game. dx9 performs like crap and the game really starts to look dated. dx11 is so bugged that idk if its worth the performance improvement when all shadows are a mess and the 256 pixel resolution textures plague the game, making the use of tesellation or parallax a terrible idea.
