Actually the Vesper Bay Ferry is still a useful one. Instead of running from the Horizon Aetheryte to the Waking Sands, the fastest way is teleport to Limsa >> Aethernet to Arcanist Guild >> Ferry to Vesper Bay. Quick tip for those unaware.

As for the interactive transportation, I think it's easy to see how it's a double-edged sword. It's great for the atmosphere and for just showing off the world from another angle, as well as for adding some gameplay possibilities like the vehicle being attacked or providing gathering opportunities. On the other hand, it also adds the "gameplay opportunity" to sit on your butt bored for several minutes. As a very long time FFXI player, let me tell you the thrill of riding on that big airship wears off after the 300th time and you start pondering just how much of your irreplaceable life you've spent pretending to wait for the bus. FFXI really did do some interesting things with the transportation though. For the two expansions that took place on other continents, reaching that new area involved getting on a boat and taking a fairly lengthy ride. It really added something to that initial discovery. And then you never had to ride that boat again if you didn't want to, because you'd get a way to teleport there after you arrive. Another one I liked was the ferry added in CoP that ran once every real life hour and a half, because it was a 40 minute boat ride. And there was absolutely no possible way to teleport to the island (outside of a couple seasonal events i think). There were only a tiny number of things to do there, but one of those things was a gathering activity exclusive to that island. Clamming, I think it was. Not a terribly profitable gathering activity, mind you, but just a weird little thing that only existed in this far flung inaccessible corner of the world. Which was a tropical paradise, in case you were wondering. A rare thing in a game where "tropical" was normally synonymous with "you're going to get lost in this horrific maze and die." I bet there's not a single person on that island on any remaining FFXI server right now. Just the idea that there's an isolated, uninhabited tropical island whose only purpose was to be exactly that, just in case players wanted to throw a beach party or roleplay as a marooned sailor or whatever else called for that setting. It's another odd case where the onerous travel time is actually part of the appeal. Seeing as teleportation is ubiquitous in FFXIV-2, it would be cool if there were also interactive transportation for those who wanted it just see the lay of the land from the sky. I'm also glad to be able to just immediately bamf to my destination most of the time though. We could have both.

in all likelihood, the aurum vale was named for the pools of 'gold bile' which i believe to be Auric Acid. Which would also explain the 'gold lung' affliction from it's fumes. Literally a caustic mixture of gold and in this case most likely the acidic compounds excreted by the Miser's Mistress and the leech, aurellia and diremite type enemies in the area. So, the adventurers hoping to strike it rich weren't necessarily wrong, as there would probably be gold deposits in there, but it would be completely irretrievable due to the environment it's found in. On the subject of the Ferries and airships, i do miss that they existed as physical elements in the world, i've long hoped they would reintroduce them as 'scenic' travel, with the random events and unique opportunities for fishing, maybe even some special triple triad challenges to be had with the npc passengers.

I like the idea of real time transport, and sometimes I pine for the old days of MMOs when you had to physically travel to get anywhere. It made the world feel larger and more alive. Most modern MMOs allow you to teleport all over the place, and you don't really get the sense of the journey any more. But I understand why it isn't like that any more. People have other things to do, jobs to get to and children to feed. Time is more precious than when you were a teenager. But still, unless I'm in a hurry, I usually try to make physical journeys over the landscape instead of just zipping around on teleport. ... unless it's because Tataru wants me to get tea leaves from goddamn Coerthas.

I'd definitely love to see interactive transportation back in the game as a scenic choice where you can sit, talk, or RP by riding a boat or airship. And since they're upping the quality of the game, I don't see why they couldn't.

The interactive Ferry's were a HUGE thing in FFXI and I was glad to see them back when I played FFXIV 1.0. So many memories in the first game that revolved around Kraken's, Pirate Attacks and perpetually riding back and forth fishing and hoping that damned Apakullu would spawn. Personally I think that with the addition of Cloud Fishing in 3.0 that bringing back Ferrys/Airships with a focus on the Fishing Gathering Class would be a great thing. Put fishing and cooking based vendors on the different boats, make random FATE spawn like in the olden days and it would be a great addition to the game.

Live transportation is definitely a relic of old MMO design I really liked. I never played FFXIV 1.0, but taking the ship in Maplestory to Orbis for the first time ever back when it was new was incredible and exciting. It didn't matter how long it took to wait for the ship and how long it took to land. But with MMO design and games in general having changed a lot since then, it's definitely hard to see a good place for it these days. Even I would probably have trouble using it more than a couple of times especially when presented of the convenience of teleporting in 2.0. A shame, but a necessary change I guess.

I miss the transport ships from FFXI, it was nice to sit back and watch the world go by, plus see a Tarutaru tank all the mobs. I still use the ships and airships even now, it saves a tiny amount of gill and actually places me better if I need to reach the Waking Sands: teleport to Limsa, then ferry to Vesper Bay

Really enjoying this series! I would love to see you do a segment about enemies that aggroed by sight/proximity/sound (i.e. aggroed when you were running but not walking) and the Wanderer's Shadow achievement. That whole epic saga of sneaking into areas with insanely high-level mobs to grab all the aetheryte nodes was one of the most unique, challenging, and satisfying parts of 1.0 for myself and many other players.

That interractive ferry thing reminds me of back when I used to play WoW, using the ferry between Darnassus and Auberdine. I'm sure there were other ferries that didn't have a loading time and actually crossed the sea in real time, but this is the only one I remember, and I legit loved the idea, it was really fun. I'd like to see that in ffxiv too, especially since we have the possibility to teleport anyways, so it wouldn't be a bother for those who don't want to take the ferry. Also, I can't speak for 1.0 Aurum Vale seeing as I didn't play at that time, but sometimes I feel like the only one unironically enjoying Aurum Vale x) Coincounter is actually a fun boss imo ^^

Have you thought about covering the NMs from 1.0? As a 1.0 vet, the very first 'endgame' content were the open world NMs, if you can really call those 'endgame'. They dropped unique crafting mats that are still present in the game even though the level 50 NMs are no where to be found.

There's no reason they can't have both the instant teleport and the times ferry available, just by walking past the counter. They already have the fishing ship every 2 hours in Limsa, they could implement that with the actual ferry system too and expand on the things you can get, as well as allowing you to level your fishing that way from more zones.

I use the ferry to vesper bay all the time. It's quicker to go to limsa and take the ferry then it is to port of Horizon and ride a chocobo. While playing through the story you do have to go there quite a lot only really saves you about a min in time but still it's a min and kinda worth it.

Honestly at least for optical reasons they should add the airships back to look at. That docking was really impressive. But fuck waiting for boats/airships I will just teleport around. And btw you are wrong on the boat seeing no use in vesper bay it's the fastest way to get to the Waking Sands.

Since there is no aetheryte shard there it's such a pain to get there (Don't remind me of the pre-HW quest line either ;-; ) I'd honestly kinda love to see the old system come back but I can see why it wouldn't with the world being much smaller and all chopped up.

I guess the interactive transportation hits that nostalgia spot from FFXI. I'm a bit torn on the subject, personally: I have very limited time to play these days so using all of it to travel around would be rough, but I'm also very fond of roaming the world looking for adventure. Even now I'll occasionally go to lower level zones on a healer job or something and try to help new players. It makes for fun player interaction as I remember starting off and players helping me out a lot. Though, the world can be less-traveled these days and everyone's just teleporting from A to B, straight-line to quest, B to C, etc. That's just how modern MMOs are these days, I suppose!

In FFXI, ppl would wait on the Ship/Airship dock and when it arrived they would just hop on and afk. It would deposit you at your destination and when you came back from w/e you were doing, you'd be where you wanted to go. There were also some cool events that would take place on the Ocean Boats like Undead Pirates or NMs that might drop something interesting.

Some ferries are actually still useful or the fastest way to get to point A to B. Vesper Bay for example, its shorter to take the ferry from limsa than take the walk from horizon, you can only access the left side of camp bronze lake and the Isle of Umbra through ferries (although you wont have alot of business) and more recently from Onokoro to Sazuki in the Ruby Sea.

dude Aurum Vale is so full of wipes the way it is now, I can't imagine how it was before. one thing I saw in 1.0 videos was players changing classes inside of dungeons, which was.... weird. there's footage of an Aurum Vale run where this happens quite often. Man, Vesper Bay really developed into something great. Now most the important characters that come from other continents (cough cough Othard cough cough) arrive in the docks of Vesper Bay. Man, that's something I miss in the game, having this real time travel for people who choose to use the ships and airships. I remember they briefly talked about airship battles between FCS when they implemented the workshops. I wonder if it was the PS3 support that held this feature back? I imagine it would be great to use the ships to fish for special ocean fishes.

I regularly use the existing transport systems over Aetheryte travel as I find it more immersive. Pretty sure I'd've liked the old ship system with set encounters happening regularly. Could have random difficulties with an option for players with levels too low to pop below decks. I'm leaning towards Vesper Bay being a port location for travel East in the next expansion (duh), and putting an optional dungeon encounter as part of the trip would be great. Clueless how they'd set that up though. Loving all the content you're putting out. Makes me regret not hearing about the game until 2015. Yup, I live under a rock.

While I don't exactly want to see it reintroduced as pretty much the only way to get from one place to another, I'd love for interactive transportation to come back. Just...as something you go on voluntarily. Stormblood is the sea expansion after all, I'd love if we got the chance to ride a boat for real, defend it, fight off enemies, interact with cannons like in some of the Vigil Dungeons, fish during breathers in between, and reach a treasure island in the end with cool, special stuff you can find only there, like with Aquapolis. Probably need a new form of lvl 70 treasure map to even enter the boat. Something like that^^

i miss the interactive travel, it never bothered me, as I'm the type to literally walk to rp. I played ff11 for 7 years. Unless you were in a rush and can use teleport. It was a fun way to chill. ff11 did offer rewards and side quests to make ppl do it. a smuggling side quests, a item return, killing the a mini boss skeleton gave you loot for a quest. as well as others. they could add repeatable quests, or roleplay factor to travel. Like wagons, ships, airships.

Looking back, I think that including random real-time events in the ferry/airship system may make the system seem less redundant. I don't miss the anima system's execution (though I prefer its flavor over the Gil system, which makes little sense for "ancient and abandoned aetherytes" in areas like Anyx Trine and Moghome that are not controlled by a group that can impose aetheryte taxes, a la the Syndicate), but I think that having the possibility of a small random encounter on a ferry trip and the ability to fish a la ocean fishing (which is a thing now) would make their use more appealing nowadays. As it stands, they generally don't even matter THAT much for saving gil, since you're usually not saving THAT much more, unless you're going to the Gold Saucer (or going to Ul'Dah and stopping by the Saucer).

Have to say i always use the ferry if im in Vesper Bay and need to get to Limsa. I also always use the Airships to get between city states. I won't go out of my way to use them though, like I won't specifically travel back to a city state to use the airship, and I won't travel all the way to Vesper to travel by ferry. Have to say I would welcome the interactive transport scenes although it would most likely lead to Ferrys and Airships never being used due to how quick and easy it is to teleport now. Maybe thats something for Stormblood however given how expensive the teleporting will apparently be between continents.

I used vesper bays ferry a lot in 2.0 because its actually quicker to go from limsa to vesper than horizon to vesper given its lack of an aetheryte

While I wouldn't mind some slower ferry/airship rides every now and then, it being the only transport method would drive me mad. Definitely one of those older mmo conventions I don't mind not seeing every again. Though it's a shame we can't at least see airships fly into and out of ports, that would be an easy compromise to keep the skies alive without putting too much effort into a system very few would use.

Huh. It occurs to me, the Garleans in Aurum Vale may have been researching chemical warfare... An early set-up for what became the Black Rose maybe?

Here's a theory about what the Garleans could be doing in Aurum Vale. Collecting Gold Lung samples to be used in research that would lead to the development of White Rose

My biggest complaint about 2.0 AV is that many new players (and existing lazy ones) enter with gear that makes them a wet piece of paper. In 1.0, you had to organize it with seven other (competent) players and as you pointed out, not screw over your party from getting click-happy on the fruits. Now you pray that whoever you get is not complete trash and at least knows how to keep hate. I don't actively seek out AV, but it is still good for exp while leveling - Totorak I will always eat the timer penalty. I do miss the airship and ferry rides, but as other posters have noted, it also got to that FFXI point where you pushed auto-run at the airship landing and went afk for 10 minutes or found something else to amuse yourself. At that point, it was a needless time sink - I'm sure people remember the days from FFXI of going to exp in Yuhtunga, only to miss the airship and tell your party that you'll be there in 20 minutes and then get replaced ; ;

I really wish they brought back real time ferries and maybe airships. To balance that out maybe increase aetheryte travel costs or reduce their density? To be honest the way it is right now is very convenient and..... promotes extreme lazyness :P I rarely find myself riding my chocobo for longer than a minute or 2, and with super cheap teleportation costs - it's really easier to teleport to aetherite all the time. WIsh chocobo travel was more of a thing (as well as chocobo stable transportation, which I only used very early on. I wouldn't mind sacrificing some comfort in form of not being able to just teleport from kugane to limsa in 1 click for the sake of immersion :P

WoW having actual transport ships was always cool to me and immersive. However, the waiting does sort of slow down gameplay and not everyone is as much a nut or immersion as i am.

Doubt it. It was probably part of some bioweapon program that that Black Rose was also, but independently a part of. Black Rose was initially researched in the imperial province of Ala Mhigo under Gaius's watch.

I disagree about the ferry docks being a relic in 2.0+. Why's that? Because Vesper Bay doesn't have an aetherite, even though you need to go there constantly. (And it's interesting to note that there actually is a reason given for this in the storyline. A minor detail, but I appreciate that the writers also noticed that a major port like VB really should have an aetherite.) The most obvious way to get there is to teleport to Horizon and cut through the Footfalls, but that's not actually the fastest route. The fastest way to Vesper Bay is to teleport to Limsa Lominsa, take the aethernet to the Arcanist's Guild which happens to be right next to the Vesper Bay ferry, and ride the ferry over. So you'd better believe that ferry is still seeing plenty of traffic, though probably not quite as much as in 1.x. And I see that loads of other people have already said the same thing. Ah well, just goes to show how true it is.

Was the area between Horizon and Vesper Bay in 2.x on ever anything? The brief watery path with the ruins, used for a whole lot of leves? The ruins there always caught my curiosity, and I always wondered if they used to be something real before the calamity.

Actually, it's the opposite - the ruins weren't something whole before, they were not even there. It was an extensive net of watery clearings connected by tunnels, but I don't remember seeing any ruins there. Guess the catastrophe dug a lot deeper than before and we can now see things that were hidden :)
