Pro 42 years in Plumbing Lic. in LA Ca.(past) and Phx AZ. (current). Excellent video! I use your info on my own home improvements as a jack of all trades but master of one! To ease installation of the Oatey no calk gasket, I use a little bit of dish soap and I also prefer 'Plumbers putty " instead of 100%silicone as putty is soft and stays pliable easier to clean up. if tightened with a wrench just past snug the putty seal will never leak and provides a bacteria and mold resistance seal. Silicone is an acceptable means of sealing, just for a tip of the trade, keep a spray bottle of mineral spirits to remove excess silicone on finishes.! I just have a preference of putty because I have demoed plumbing from installs from the beginning of the use of putty(1940's) and seen that it never leaked . Silicone is recommended on porous surfaces such as stones used in high end tub and shower builds. Putty will stain these stones such as marble etc. I recommend the use of at the very least, a teflon or kevlar based thread sealing compound on "all mechanical threads used for sealing components", no questions as to why, just do it! lol ADA code for horizontal grab bars is 33"-36" on center above finish floor. I noted that this is for optional bars and not for an ADA shower. Ada code compliance showers require extensive attention for locations of valves, hand held shower, and "transfer" or "roll in" access! Green or 'patina" is not a sign of age it is from flux left over upon install look at the old joints for hard water minerals which will be white deposits growth at pipe to fitting soldered connections, this will be a sign of leakage. Pin holes you referred to can be in old and new type M or L and is caused primarily from what is called "occlusions" I have experienced this and had to refer to the manufacture for explanation. This is caused from contaminates in the manufacturing of copper M is code for a minimum standard in residential and L is for commercial but "L" is the better choice. Other practices shown here in this video are very good! Pex pipe is to be strapped every 3' and install in a manner that allows for expansion and contraction. I am the same in that i work better with no gloves and I can't see as well as I used to but PPE IS NECISARY FOR A SAFE AND HAPPY JOB WELL DONE!

Great video!! I really enjoyed watching the whole process. I hope you give us another one like this. I always quote toilet installs at $200 because there is a good chance the sub floor or flange needs repaired. If I pull the toilet and everything looks good and it’s a straight forward install I change my quote to $125.

1:00:16 I’ve read that it’s not advised to use a wet rag to wipe down your hot solder joint. It can cause the different metals to cool at different rates which can weaken your joint.

What about the air admittance valve? You gonna install a access panel or is their a way to access it it? Because there is going to be big problems when it fails and needs to be replaced I’ve seen it before I’ve replaced a couple of them.

I’ve watched so many of your videos Im fixing a shower leak right now in our shower had to pull out everything. I’ve put up the go board and have taped and waterproofed most of it. But I have a question? How do you transition from the shower tile to the drywall on an outside corner? Do you put a drywall corner bead up then tile to that edge and put in the tile edge so it looks nice (will that pop the tile too far away from the wall? or do you put your tile in and the then the tile edging and mud up to the tile edge? Or do you tile up to a few inches away from the outside corner with a tile edge at the end of the tile? Also do you wrap the waterproof paper around the edge instead of using drywall mud. Does that make sense?

If you caulk your toilet base, leave the back open enough not to see the gap but let the leak out so you know if there is one. God forbid there is a leak but you won’t find out until it’s to late and you have water damage to the flooring or worse. That’s why you shouldn’t caulk it. If the floor is done right it should sit flush anyway.

You talked about there being no vent in the drain line and then chose to use two separate air admittance valves, one for the tub and another for the vanity. I'm curious why you didn't simply vent properly to the main stack that was right there, especially since both valves will have limited air access since they are inside wall stud cavities.

Thank you so much for these videos!! You told us to ask questions, so here goes: I have old tongue and groove 2" thick redwood floors in my bathroom. I've had to repair a couple areas. It's not flat. I'd like to use a floor leveler, but being tongue and groove the leveler would just find it's way out between the boards, especially the repaired boards that aren't T&G.How would you go about leveling this kind of floor?
@BathroomRemodelingTeacher
@BathroomRemodelingTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and for something like that unfortunately you’d have overlay with at least 1/2” plywood before leveling, or tear completely out and put new 3/4” down. There isn’t any I know of that can handle the expansion and contraction of tongue and groove boards like that. I see a lot of Douglas fur around here. Crazy they would use redwood 😆

Good move not showing how to do the vents since you did them wrong. You didn't need 2 vents you only needed one. The shower can vent off the sink if it's less than 9' and you ran 2" in the floor. You can't put an AAV in inaccessible areas. The one behind the shower will eventually need to be replaced and no one will know it is there. The customer will start having a sewer smell that no one can figure out until a smoke test is done. An access panel on that back wall is going to look pretty ugly.
