Thanks for sharing. In 76 I was a city kid and my family moved to a small house in the Arkansas Ozark mountains. Wood heat, no running water, and an out house. I thought I'd go crazy till I got my first dog, and my first shotgun. Suddenly the woods was mine, and I knew every creek and cave in the area. I miss it to this day.

As homesteaders, we have found that if you "work" for your water, you become so much more grateful for it. It is another avenue for gratitude for the seemingly simple things that most take for granted. Brings into greater focus what generations before us had to do to live.

So true. It’s amazing how much water is wasted when it is easily accessible and conserved when it’s not.

So true. One of my kids was involved in a group ecology/Earth Day project years ago and each girl selected one topic to present at a booth we had at a nature preserve. My daughter had atm/gas pump receipts. Apparently only 2% of people actually “need” the hard copy of those items but most people still allow it to print when given the option & then toss it. If you add up every atm/gas pump rcpt in America in one year you could make a chain that would wrap around the planet. Another young lady had a very simple but EFFECTIVE visual aid about water waste. A 5 gallon bucket which is the amount of water you waste leaving the faucet on when brushing your teeth. This was probably 10 yrs. ago & to this day my head nearly explodes when I watch a video or movie and people let the water run while they talk as they do skin care or tooth brushing. We are so spoiled & generally ignorant to how fortunate we are to have such resources.

I used a washboard for years. Never again. The little washer/spin dryer I use now is excellent. Then everything is dried on a clothes drying rack near the woodstove. I use a lot more water than you though. My soap is a Zote bar soap and Borax mixture I make.

I don't mind the washboard at all. I know a lot of people say looks like back breaking work, but honestly, I don't think it is all that bad. Hauling water is way more of a chore! 🤣 I have seen a lot of people rave about the little washer and spin dryer. My problem is that anything that is a set it and forget it type of appliance, will get just that. Set it. Forget it. Until much later. LOL. I bet your clothes smell great! Zote definitely has a nice smell too it. 😊💛

Oh my goodness do I hate doing laundry! And I even have a compact automatic washer & dryer in The Little House! I just let the clothes pile up in a corner and do the wash every couple of weeks. I do love your set up though Alone and admire your patience and diligence and what almost appears as passion for hand washing your clothes! I did make one big adjustment about 10 years ago that really made my laundry chores move along much quicker. I threw away my iron & ironing board 😂! I did notice subtle changes in this video in your camera angles & some of your editing details which I thought really added context to your already great content. Unless someone is actually producing videos, I think it is hard to have true appreciation for how much work & time goes into making things flow in such an interesting way as you do. I find the camera tracking motion sensor/tripod gimbal gadget to be well worth looking into. Thank you for sharing that. I am so very technologically challenged that I often go unaware of some of the latest tools that are out there. I have yet to even invest in a drone for fear I will crash the thing into the tree tops or the bottom of Back Bay! I am always learning something new from you! Like the vinegar thing. Which I am already very much aware of it’s bacteria prevention properties because I include it in so many other applications in the restaurant. But it never occurred to me to add it to my rinse water for dishes. Something I will definitely be adding in practice in camp. It is amazing how far you can stretch your water supply when you have to haul your own. I go through far less of it when I am in camp than I do here at home. I have two wells here on The Pungo Prairie which makes me feel really spoiled! One is a shallow well which I drove by hand with a pitcher pump. I haven’t used that one for a couple of years because it needed a new leather. I replaced the leather this past week so it’s back up & running now. Thanks for another very entertaining and informative video Alone! Hoping your weather breaks soon!

Hi Bill! I used to be the same way when I lived back in Colorado. But then I realized that it was because laundry wasn't interactive enough for me. 😁 I kid you not! I hated doing laundry so much that whenever I thought about designing a house, I always wanted the bedroom closets to open up into the laundry room, so you didn't have to carry the clothes from room to room. I had a bad habit of starting the washer and forgetting about it. 😒 And ironing?!? Forget it! I know people who iron a crease in their Levi's still to this day! LOL. The gimbal tracker is a hohem iSteady M6 kit. I am totally impressed with this device. it is awesome! But I also just bought a DJI pocket 2 action camera and it will basically do the same thing and is so small that you can carry it around in public and not be completely obvious. I will eventually get a drone but also fear that I will crash or lose it. I remember trying to play driving video games using the thumb joystick controllers and could never stay on the track; can only imagine how bad I will be at navigating the drone! 😲 The vinegar in my dish rinse water helps to remove water spots and also to ensure any grease that might still be on the dishes after washing is pulled away. The dishes are squeaky clean after rinsing with vinegar. I would dig a shallow well here, but everyone that I have talked to in this area has said that it is not an option. The aquafers are too far down, the ground is too rocky, and the water isn't even drinkable. When someone has managed to get a deep well dug, they generally are unable to get any substantial water pressure. The water at the public wells in the area is good so I guess I will just keep using them. At some point, I hope to get a truck so I can haul a larger amount of water all at once. Glad you liked the video, Bill. Always good to hear your thoughts.

Hi Alone, if you want to do laundry the old fashion way, do like I used to do laundry, a 5 gal. bucket and a plunger, that was the good old days. The water I get is good old mountain water, tastes so good. This year, I used slightly over 2 cords of wood. The temps here have been single digits in the morning then, warming up to the high 20's and 30's. We are supposed to get snow all week, yuck. Isn't it time for your cooking channel, I'm getting hungry, lol. Thanks for sharing.

Hi John! Thanks for the tip, but I think I will stick with the wash tubs! 🤣 Luckily the well water that I get is some of the best water around this area. Nice tasting and clean. But just down the road, the water is horrible! 🤢 It is still snowing here! A couple of days of nice weather and right back to the snow. Can't catch a break in the weather for very long this spring. Oh well... summer and those pesky misquotes will be here soon. Don't worry I will have plenty of cooking videos soon. Bring your appetite! 😉💛

As a fellow water hauler I can honestly say I prefer hauling water over indoor plumbing in a colder investment. It seemed like their was always a leaking pipe or drippy sink wrecking the floor. So ill never have indoor plumbing again. I use about 1 gallon of water to shower mabe 2. In the winter might I suggest melting snow to get water for cleaning chores. You still have to pour it through a cloth of some sort to filter it but for cleaning the floor or stuff like that it doesn't need to be pure water. It even works for bathing in. A plywood floor is a sturdy floor with lots of character. I know this because I to walk on plywood and I love the look of it. Kenai seemed happy with his treat. All in all your getting it figured out what does and does not work for you. I hope you have a great Easter and God Bless
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska Жыл бұрын
Not many people are willing to invest the time and energy it takes to haul water in and out especially in an environment like ours. And would rather take the risk of a burst pipe, or a leak here and there. I am so glad that I disconnected all the plumbing in the cabin. Even when I rebuild the bathroom, I won't have traditional plumbing. It just isn't worth the risk. I did melt snow last year for cleaning, and managed to stretch the drinking water out as long as possible. Thank goodness for the berkey! But luckily this year I was able to get off the property and collect water at one of the local wells. If it came down to it, I have no problem melting snow for either drinking or cleaning water, after all I came here to live a simple life. I hope your Easter was great too, and that you and your family are doing well! 🤗💛

Wondering whether at some point you might do rain collection. It would certainly ease your water carrying for at least 6 months of the year. You could even funnel rain water directly to a barrel inside the cabin. I would think you'd absolutely need rainwater collection for your garden-to-come.

I am thinking about doing laundry your way. I have a Samsung washer and it does not do my standard of cleaning. They make all washer's now water restrictive. They call it eco-friendly. What that really means is that you get a tablespoon of water and that's it. I want my washers at least three-fourths full. Won't happen with these new washers. Love your laundry setup. Hi Alone. Will try to send through a postal letter soon. Hope you are doing really well, especially now with your warmer temperature season almost with you and things budding into life once again around you. Down here in Perth, our winter is just starting and the cyclone season up north of us in the Kimberley region will begin to send storms and rain our way. Don't laugh when I tell you this, but the temperature here in the hills of Perth is down to 9C tonight (brrrrr! Cold enough for Bonnie and I. Why I even had to light the fire for the first time tonight!) Never mind your extreem minus temperatures, although we love to see all the snow! When winter really gets going here the temp. at night will average around 2C to 5C while the day temps. will get around 13C to 18C. Alone, your channel content is really interesting and very informative. We love it. Bonnie is really interested in the laundry soap recipe and we will try it. We just have to be careful of our washing detergents as we are on septic tanks and can't upset the bacterial balance in the sludge. Anyway, we do so enjoy your video companionship so thank you ever so much for the effort. Many sincere hugs to you and Kenai. Graeme and Bonnie.

Alone, I loved the beginning of this video. It was so beautiful and set to lovely music. I don't think most people who are connected to the city utilities think about getting water or even how much they use on a daily basis. Maybe they might think about getting bottled water during their Costco run but that's how far removed our society is now a days. It's so great that you did this video because if and possibly when things go awry in our modern world today, people need to learn how to do the basics. I don't doubt that the way you're doing your laundry gets your laundry cleaner. All a washing machine does is agitates the water but you're actually scrubbing it against the board. Bravo and great video!

Hi Laurie! Ah, glad you liked the opening of the video. I never really paid too much attention to how much water I was using when I lived in the city. I knew it was less than some of my friends only because we would discuss our water bill on occasion. But now when I think back about letting the faucet run while washing potatoes, or rinsing dishes, I cringe. And yes, water is so essential for survival and bottled water will only get you so far! I have often wondered what most people would do if they ran out of those bottles during a real long term crisis. So scary to think about. The first time, I did a full load of laundry by hand, and I saw how much dirt came out I was grossed out. But then when I saw how clean everything was, I was sold on doing it this way. 🤗💛

I really like the red wall behind the shelves in combination with the light woods. The cabin is getting better, and I like your ideas on what you want to do with the space. Since you are planning to have tall cabinets built up upstairs , keep in mind that they might block the sunlight coming from downstairs and also be careful with dark colours, because they are linked to seasonal depression and you don't seem to get a lot of light during the winter, so you are at higher risk. Also.. 1. Are you planning to get better a windows in the future? Have you considered a thermo curtains? 2. Are you going to build up more walls to separate the space 3. Are you planning to install more heating outputs around the cabin? I mean heating up upstairs rooms as well? 4. Are you planning to build or buy furniture? Apologies for all the questions, I am an interior designer, and I really get invested in this..🙈😀🙈 Take care and keep posting content. ❤❤

Even I have wash boards, one is a very heavy glass type. To be honest, Ive never used them, as I have two rocks down at the creek for nosey city ladies who ask where my washing machine is. I take them to the creek and never have them return to visit..

Nice ammo cans in the car. How much the water cost you get in town? Your laundry set up beats rocks at the river. LOL

I was wondering when someone was going to catch the ammo cans! I pay just over a $100 annually if I use one well, or can pay by coin at the other. Yeah, I could have made a spoof of the sirens laundry scene from O' Brother Where Art Thou, if the rivers were not still iced over! 🤣

I don't know if it rains where you are but you could get a couple of those big white water tanks and rain harvest, then you can install an entry line to your kitchen or laundry area. I know they are hardy temperature tanks, one of the boys can help you with the diverters and first flush, it's easy. I It will be so much comfortable.

Great laundry set up. During warmer weather I do my laundry outside with rainwater I've collected. Otherwise I go to the nearest laundromat. I'm looking forward to trying your detergent recipe! Great video content! ( and I was wondering who was following you around)😉

Hi Beth! I am hoping to get a rainwater catchment system set up in the next year or so. I hope that I can collect enough to keep me from having to haul water. I hope you like the detergent recipe. If I were going to the laundromat, I would dissolve a bit of the FelzNapa laundry soap in with the detergent when I pre-mix it in a plastic water bottle before going. This way it has the added benefit of the soap when hand scrubbing isn't an option. Glad you liked the camera set up! LOL. I was watching it back and kept laughing because it literally looks like someone is holding the camera as it swayed back and forth. 😁💛

Good Morning Annie, Beautiful weather you have out there although it's snowing at times, love how you do the wash by hand. When I was a kid we used to do that on the back porch or I should say my mother did it. I always like ringer part. And I love those buckets. With the Coca-Cola script on it. Yes it is good that you are cleaning out those barrels with water in them. Maybe one day you can have a big tank buried out, so that you can put water in it and you don't have to go every couple weeks to get water. You have a great and fabulous week, and I love that six iron on your hip. LOVES.

Great video as usual. When we lived off grid for almost 15 years, I did laundry by hand in a slop bucket and new toilet plunger. It worked great, then a friend gifted me with a hand me down Hoover spin washer, omgoodness such a blessing it was. We had a old galvanized bath tub I used to sit by the wood cook stove and fill to bath. It was a lot of work so didn’t use it much. Sponge baths worked just fine for the most part. Anyways love the new camera thingy, take care 🌷🇨🇦

Hi Moose! Most people start their day with a cup of coffee. 😉 All joking aside, I hope it was a good day. The snow has finally stopped and the sun has finally decided to warm things up. Finally! Yeah, when you don't have running water, you it doesn't even phase you to use so little water. Especially when you have to not only haul the water in, but also OUT! 😳

Awesome talk. I'm still trying to figure the laundry thing out for my new cabin build. I am a veteran year round road cyclist, and I'm always amazed how dirty my gear gets , even just jerseys, after two wears. I currently use Zote , melted and watered down , and just use a tiny amount, but I add laundry booster or Borax , and boy does that rock. I'll also use an automotive brush for a laundry brush. I agree that hand washing is far superior. It will probably take me awhile to install a well, and I have to figure out where to fill water jugs. I wonder if copper and sulphur can be filtered out . I need to use a good enviro-friendly soap or detergent. Thanks for noting that about vinegar and Castille , I didn't know that. I have a huge stainless bowl for the kitchen but wow, I gotta get a huger one like you got there.

What holds the washboard down into the tub? Does your back hurt slightly bending over like that to scrub? Have you thought about creating a hot water tank with your wood stove by curling some copper tubing around the vent piping? Good luck on that job search!
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska Жыл бұрын
The washboard just sits in the tub. It really doesn't move around on me while scrubbing. I know that most people hold the washboard against themselves, but I find that to be a lot more work and effort. I am not really bending over too much, because I am so short. 🤣 I have thought about it but have found that the water bath canner siting on the back corner of the stove has worked out well for me. I might eventually do something like that, but it won't happen until I replace the wood stove. Thank you for the well wishes on the job hunt! 🤗💛

Hi Alone! While watching you fetch water in those heavy jugs, I wondered why you don't have water bricks? I have them for emergency storage and they are so awesome in the way they stack like LEGOS and take up way less space. Just a thought. Kenai was so adorable taking his cookie bone from you.
