On my new build I found that the engine runs cooler and better with 10w30 vs everyone saying to run 20w50. I just switched from VR1 10w30 to full synthetic 10w30 with zinc additive and my temps dropped approx 10-15 degrees thus far. I’m going to hold off installing the oil cooler for now.... Just some food for thought from this way. Good vid man.

I am glad you use the VR1 its not just VWs that lost lifter-cams lobes. In the 60s-70s-80s-90s never seen that happen , just on motors with real high miles on them ? I use the 20-50 VR1

switched to castrol many years ago and found it to be much better. VR1 breaks down in the air cooled engine. Castrol and kendal dont. i learned this from trying it many years ago from a recommendation. After same mile oil change VR1 came out like water and castrol came out dirty but just at the same viscosity as when I put it in. All the shops around here sell Kendal because of those reasons learned in the 80s.
@jimmywilkinson9190
@jimmywilkinson9190 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mikefngarage I will try to find it ( Kendall ) but I do not remember seeing it before. The best oil ever was back in the 80s Exxon Super flow 20-50 . when I started using it I noticed that the motor lasted 15-20 thousand more miles. It would not loose the thrust as fast.

Hey J. You were in fast forward, but I don’t believe I saw you put any teflon tape on that last hose connection. If it still leaks, that might be your culprit, but I hope you got it sorted out. Not to pick on ya, but I also didn’t see you put a new crush washer on your drain plug. Used to buy ‘em by the dozen. But I really enjoyed this vid...all the satisfaction of getting the work done without takin’ an oil bath...sweet! BTW, nice distance in that oil filter!
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW 5 жыл бұрын
Hey brother thanks for the comment! That connection is a 37 Degree no tape needed. As for the oil pan that is an o-ring there... but it's a good idea to run a crush washer, that will probably go on next. Lol... yeah that filter went YARD!!! Lol

JW: oil cooler position..location..? Questionable: the place where I'm seeing is: Road-dirt from off the tire..attaching to fan & oil-cooler it self.. especially mud when you hit mud puddles I'm assuming you don't drive the car in the rain.. looks like you just drive that one for pleasure that's probably why you got other cars that are there to use..I only assume that the reason you put the oil cooler there was that the hoses would be much shorter an easier to work on..well, I hav'n't put in my remote oil cooler yet../ except I did hand fabricate my original oil stock-cooler (for Bus/Porsche oil cooler that has 10 rows instead of original eight.. that meant opening-up the dog cooler about an inch can I use rivets ( no welder equipment or experience ) and JB Weld in order to seal it.. it fits in there real snug and I didn't even have to beat the firewall back .& still got a half an inch clearance between the firewall in the oil cooler & still uses the same equipment for the little door that goes down through the back plate on the engine so the heat comes out & still use use original spring lovers and fins equipment.. with thermostat.. I get about 20% more cooling capacity and it still looks stock.. so now I want to put in a remote oil cooler like yours..I think I'm going to install it maybe ( in front of the transmission just underneath the rear seat I'm thinking about using corrugated stainless steel for the tubing.. I need something that's really flexible and strong.. because Volkswagens do a lot of movement & vibration.. see I want the oil to go through the filter.. but I don't want the oil cooler fan running all the time and I don't want the oil running through the through the cooler when the engine is cold and it's cold outside.. like if I my driving in snowy areas.. maybe some kind of check valve that opens at se-205°F ~ 245°F & Fan on an electric thermostat..starts at 195°F ~ "starts a Red Flashing light at 265°F" and above for time to put-over and just let the motor cool off.. anyways that's just some ideas I have Jason..(critter).

Ok yeah I think as a hobbiest we are not always in the know of terminology. Some I think are the later bug gearbox that have only one plate that unbolts on the side through where the drive shaft goes to the vc joint and the other side has now become moulded as part of the box and the other box has both side plates ,is what I call them , do unbolt where the driveshafts go through and wondering if there are any internal changes thanks Jason 😊

can you explain the mounting of the oil cooler in that location. Does gravity affect its capacity and how effective it is
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW 3 жыл бұрын
Gravity affects it in only one way that I found and that was by giving you a false reading on your dipstick. If you check after the car has been sitting for awhile engine not running it will seem like the oil is overfilled as the oil cooler drains back into the sump. So you need to check your oil level with the engine running to get an accurate level. One of the reasons I relocated to the torsion mount location.

Is it alright to use 20. 50 vr1 oil
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with running it in a warmer climate like here in Houston during the summer. VR1 also has a Zinc additive that I like. During the cooler time of year I move back to a 10w 30. For new engines still breaking in I would stick with a 10w 30. Never had oil pressure issues or overheating problems but oil is only one factor in that equation.

Lesson learned many years ago..... I NEVER USE VALVOLINE RACING OIL. it breaks down too fast in a air cooled engine. cant handle engine temps. ONLY USE KENDALL or CASTROL. they do not break down. Valvoline has too high amounts of detergents and breaks down to watery non lubricating mess. Try castrol or kendall. after 2000 miles valvoline will have lost viscosity kendal and castrol will come out same viscosity as when you put it in with the excessive engine oil temps of vw.
