I’ve never even heard of these things, Tate. I’m off to listen to experiment #1. Beautiful piece, brother man 👍🏻

Hey Randy, thanks for checking it out! These things are a bit of a relic of a bygone era. A few builders still integrate them into their builds, though. Mostly classical guitar builders do this but I know I've see them (infrequently) on steel strung acoustic guitars. D'Addario even makes a removable one called the "O-port".

Definitely a bit of a volume boost compares to the previous recording. This is almost like a precursor to an amp, ha ha. Makes sense; Torres increased shape, etc. and was trying to get a louder, more resonant sound out of the guitar. Excellent comparison!

Thanks again, sir! So the principle at play here is called Helmholtz resonance. It's a pretty trippy experiment to do with a guitar. You can even just make a cardboard one as well. You should give it a try!

Both are stunningly beautiful, Tate! I honestly hear very little difference in the sound, even with headphones on, but if pressed, I think I prefer the recording with the tornavoz. Not that I have ever shopped for a tornavoz, but I'm curious where you got yours.

Thanks for checking this out! I like this one better also - but I don't know if it's due to the tornavoz or just that the mic placement was a bit further away. The other recording sounds a bit boomy in spots because the mic was so close. Nobody wants to stick their ear right in the soundhole of a guitar to hear it - and that's what it sounds like to me. Anyways, as far as the tornavoz goes, I had to make it myself. There aren't many options out there for purchasing. Thankfully they're easy to make!

not shure how i missed this one. the bass is something else. really great. You say this one is thinner? How does it affect volume? I had the feeling my tournavoz gave me a boost
@tateharmann305711 ай бұрын
I probably worded that poorly...the BRASS that I used for this one was of a thinner diameter than the previous one. I recorded the same piece on the same guitar without this tornavoz as well. It definitely gives the bass a boost - I feel like with the thinner brass the tone isn't coloured as much as the thicker brass...in other words, it sounds deeper but less "brassy" if that makes sense?
@FS.2772.guitar11 ай бұрын
@@tateharmann3057 absolutely. I want to make a better one too. Do you leave it in permanently? or is there more experiments on the way? :)
@tateharmann305711 ай бұрын
@@FS.2772.guitar I have at least one more experiment on the way. For that one I think the depth will be about the same but the brass will be slightly thicker than this one but slightly thinner than the first experiment haha. I also want to experiment with something else to hold it in the soundhole...the weather stripping seems to dampen the top quite a bit. All of these have been removable so far but there's no reason why you couldn't keep it in for as long as you want!

@@tateharmann3057 interesting, maybe it's cause of it's weight too. I saw a thames guitar with a carbon fiber tornavouz, back then thought it was weird but it's probably the lightest stifest thing you could find
