Thank you Jurgen for posting this video. I completed this task today and I am pleased with the because at first I didn't think I could actually do it. I did learn a few things that might be helpful to others. When Jurgen turns the black shift rod towards the drivers side of the car, you want to do the same because as push the shift rod forward, you can pull it toward the passenger seat, this will cause the end of the shift rod to ride along the inside of the torque tube tunnel, allowing you to push to its most forward position. It doesn't work so well if you lay the shift rod towards the passenger side. Secondly, the transaxle does not drop straight down. It can't, technically, because the stub axle from the transaxle is an inch or so past the mounting plane to the torque tube housing. Also, despite one's best efforts, the rear most end of the shift rod will still be a couple inches past the mounting plane towards the gearbox. Also, in its installed position, the transaxle is only about a half inch forward of the spare tire tub. So, what you do is slowly lower the transaxle until the rear part of it clears the bottom of the spare tire tub(tipping it helps), then you can begin moving it rearward so that the stub axle and shift rod clear the two housings. Then you can drop it straight away. Finally, you do not need an offset ratchet to remove the upper mounting nuts, as there is sufficient room for a 3/8 flex head ratchet with a short 13 mm socket. I suspect Jurgen wanted to demonstrate the depth of his arsenal, for which an amateur as I am very envious, especially his magic ratchet. I have never seen one like that before but I would certainly like to get one. Jurgen please correct me if I have described anything incorrectly, as I am still learning how to service this fine German automobile.

Does anyone know if you have to mark the position of the coupler before you disconnect it? So when you reconnect it does it have to be in the exact same position? Sorry if stupid question
@irina256612 жыл бұрын
If you mean the connections between the gear shifter rod, the intermediate shift leaver and the shift rod in the gearbox, you have not to mark the parts, there are center holes in the parts. Greetings, Jürgen

Thank you Jürgen, I was just wondering after sliding back the sleeve at 8:14, when you come to slide the sleeve back on do you have to mark the sleeves position as it was before so you know the exact position it was in or can it be any position?

@irina256612 жыл бұрын
@@lukedallow7425 Dear Luke. you may mark it, no problem. I have never done this. By the way, the sleeve finds automatically the position in the mid of both axles. The 2 bolts enter only, when it's in the mid.

@irina256619 жыл бұрын

@pinkchimp58649 жыл бұрын
Hätte mir einiges an Zeit erspart :-)

@pinkchimp58649 жыл бұрын

Instead of cranking the engine, let a helper engage the clutch and turn the transaxle bar by hand.
@davidcantrell50989 жыл бұрын
Or just shift the trans in neutral by hand using the linkage on top the trans. That's how I do it. And I also don't bother with removing the two bolts that hold the trans to the rubber mount. I just undo the bolts on either end of the crossmember that the mount it attached to and lower the whole thing down. It makes taking the mount and associated bolts loose much easier when it's off the car.
@mandiho9 жыл бұрын
+David Cantrell To turn the clamping flange when it is still mounted, you have to engage the clutch even if the transmission is in neutral. It is because the clamping flange is connected to both: the clutch (with engine) on the one side and the transmission on the other.
@davidcantrell50989 жыл бұрын
Oops.. you are right.. I meant to add to have someone push the clutch in instead of wrestling with the crank bolt. I had my wife assist with that.. LOL
@TtimWh9 жыл бұрын
+Tobias Ginzler If you are strong enough, and don't have a helper, you can leave the car in gear and turn the torque tube by spinning both wheels at one. In this way you don't have to get out from under the car to undo the torque tube bolts.
@davidcantrell50989 жыл бұрын
TtimWh Now that I think about it, I think that's what I did the last time I pulled the transmission from my 944. I think I left it in 5th gear to make it easier..
