This video shows you how to remove anti-reflective coating off your polycarbonate lens. This WILL NOT work on a glass lens, it will only make it worst.
What is Armour Etch?
Armour Etch is a fast acting specially formulated glass etching compound that lets you create permanently etched designs on windows, mirrors and household glassware. It contains hydroflouric acid, which is corrosive to skin. However, we are using this feature to dissolve the AR coating on the lens.
Where to buy?
amzn.com/B003W0MUVW - smallest size, thus cheapest I can find.

Just used this on my polycarbonate glasses. The coating was so bad, everything was always cloudy. These glasses cost me $600 because I had a cornea transplant and have a bad stigmatism. After 5 mins of rubbing with a q-tip, I then rinsed under hot water, and then dried it with an eye glass cloth. Now, *I can SEE AGAIN* . YAY. Armor Etch saved me a ton of money.

Well this just saved me £400! I asked for no coating on my lenses they came with an anti scratch one that I managed to ruin with some kind of spray. No idea what it was but I suspect a makeup finishing spray possibly. Took them to the optician who couldn't remove the blemished coating and advised a new pair for £400, I booked an appointment to purchase some more. Then I came across this video. After checking that my lenses were plastic and not glass, I asked the dispensing optician, I applied armour etch for 4 minutes. Coating gone, perfect vision, no horrible marks, thank you thank you thank you 😁

Used the equivalent product sold at Joanne Fabrics and happy to report it worked perfectly on two pair of glasses purchased at Sears Optical. After five minutes or so, the protective coatings were not fully gone, so after washing with hot water and drying, applied another coat for about five minutes and the coatings were completely gone! Like having two new pair of glasses...be sure to use a ventilated area and wear rubber gloves along with eye protection as described in the video. Thank you for the information!

I have $800 glasses with the expensive Cryzal brand AR coating - and the optical clarity has been getting worse and worse with micro-scratches over the last couple of years. I bought the Armour Etch from Amazon. It wasn't clear from reading online that Armour Etch would remove this particular brand of AR coating, but I took a chance because I just couldn't see. Well, it worked like a charm. I applied the paste to the fronts and backs of the lenses with a Q-tip, set a timer for 5 minutes, and rinsed under hot water. It's like I have a new pair of glasses! It did no damage to the metal frames. There was one little place where I could see a bit of the coating was still there, so I repeated the process once more and it is completely gone. I can see! I was very hesitant to try this because I don't have a backup pair, I don't have vision insurance, and I can't really see without my glasses. But they were so bad I just couldn't bear it. I'm so happy I tried this. It's amazing the difference. Also amazing how we adapt to scratched lenses. I hadn't realized just how bad they were.

Thanks for the video. I had to apply Armour Etch several times to get the multiple-layer coating off the lenses. The good thing is that Armour Etch did not affect the plastic lenses at all, even though I left it on for as long as 10 minutes. As in your case, there were some scratches on the lenses. A couple of websites recommended these products to remove them: Non-Abrasive Tooth Paste, Baking Soda, Vehicle Cleaning Wax, Windshield Water Repellent, Brass Polish, or Silver Polish. I tried making a thick paste from Baking Soda (as recommended) then brushed that on the lenses with a toothbrush in circular motions. That worked to remove most of the deeper scratches, but it left its own small scratches that made the lenses look cloudy. I then used some MAAS Metal Polishing Creme to remove the small scratches and return the lenses to a clear luster. It worked surprisingly well. Before I tried the polishing cream, I tested it on a piece of clear hard plastic to see how it affected the surface. Other brands of polishing creams would probably work just as well. Test first, as YMMV.

I used a Hydrogen Fluoride (Martha Stewards) based etching cream, which works better for glass. I did 4 pair of glasses, the first was for testing. End results were, don't be cheap with the cream, apply it thick you'll get residue. Buy two good soft hair brushes. Two coating will remove all the coating, I found that you get residual frosting with one application. It works as all 4 pair of glasses are totally scratch free now. A $15-25 bottle of etching cream will last you for years, better then the hundreds glasses could cost you.

Yes it works. I bought a different brand but same effect. 25 minutes and almost all gone. I noticed small scratches afterwards, and I am afraid it comes from the paste; I did rub a bit but I do not think it is needed; I suggest not to. Think the paste is a bit abrasive. After first treatment there were some coating left. It looked a bit cloudy so I did it again. Would like to add a warning as well: be very careful with ultra sonic washers + glasses. The trick is don't be gentle when rubbing you will not scratch the plastic lense.

If it doesn't work as instructed and gets worse, don't fret. I have Warby Parkers--- I did 2 rubbings with q-tips and let sit for 5 minutes each time. No luck-- and vision was worse. Then I decided to switch to a nylon paintbrush and scrub for 5 continuous minutes on each lens, front and back. BINGO. Seeing clear as crystal now!!! I found the edges of the lens are difficult to get, as active rubbing is required--- so I did another 5 minutes on edges.

This did take away some of the annoying coating, but it also created scratches and seemed to take off another layer unevenly. I did a few minutes at first, but it didn't make it much better, so I did another application for 5 minutes, which made it worse. I gave it a long final go for 10 minutes, which made it still worse. There are a few spots that are really clear, but I can't bring myself to believe that more will help, so I'm giving up. I knew going in they might be destroyed, so no hard feelings, but thought I'd share my experience. Mine are Warby Parkers - - my first and last pair from them!

Well, didn't turn out good. The lenses are worse now than they were before. Of course, I had a backup pair of glasses. I think I went wrong by applying it twice. I noticed some scratches still present after this first application and removal. In hindsight, I think those scratches were to the lens itself, rather than on the anti-glare coating. So, when I applied and removed it the second time, it was basically already on the lens itself, so I ended up scratching the lens badly. I used a small toothbrush to apply and scrub it in. I think anyone doing this should use the Q-tip instead, and apply it gently. Don't scrub too much.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm sorry that this didn't work out for you. This process only removes the reflective coating, scratches cannot be removed and will remain on the lenses. I made the mistake of scrubbing the lenses at first and it left so much scratches on the lenses. Armour Etch will dissolve the coating if you let it sit long enough so you don't need any scrubbing at all.

Ok so i had these spots where the antiglare coating came off. It was very visible when they would transition to dark. I started with the outer lenses left the etching cream on for 5 min then began to rub the lens with the cotton swab. You will begin to see the coating come off and when you rinse it the first time it looks a little cloudy. Repeat the same process and the coating will come off and you will begin to see when you rinse, that it starts to have a clear lens I continued used several cotton swabs but eventually they were clear! You might have to do the edges along the frame again but it works! PLASTIC LENSES ONLY it will not affect the transitions

I tried Armour Etch exactly the way you showed. Doesnt do anything. Popped my lenses out of the frame.Coated my lenses generously on both sides. Left it on for five minutes, then rinsed under hot water. Nothing. Tried again at 15min, nothing. Tried again at an hr, nothing. Tried again at 2hrd. Nothing. The AR film is clearly there, and missing pieces, but this 2.8oz bottle of Armour Etch I bought on Amazon does nothing. Going to try overnight, see if that does something. Some have said to work it in, while some have said not to since it will scratch/haze the lenses. So, I haven't tried the scrub/work it in method. What do you think?

This is a crock! Armor Etch is very gritty and though is may take the anti-glare film off your glasses it will scratch your lenses all to heck. I am now waiting on my new glasses to come in after doing this.

Does anyone have any experience with using these on painted metal frames? Can the Armour-Etch damage this kind of frame? If so, is there a way to safely remove the lenses while doing the Armour-Etch treatment, and then reinsert them afterwards?

It did not work for me. My glasses looked scratched before, but now they’re cloudy, very hard to see anything through them. First I did 5 minute then rinse. Made no difference whatsoever. Then 10 minuets and toothbrush. This made a lot of scratches. Third try was 10 minutes in alcohol then baking soda. This created more scratches, but I learned my lesson. Ordered new glasses right away
@henrywilliams1439
@henrywilliams1439 5 жыл бұрын
Your not supposed to use alcohol on plastic, it will make the lenses cloudy, because it melts the plastic lens surface. Also, Armour Etch is not for removing scratches in the lenses, it's only for removing damaged coating. A toothbrush will scratch plastic.

I tried this, didn't have anything to loose but $10 for the Armor Etch. The lenses came out looking clear, so I thought It was a success, but they were far from fixed. Had little waves in them. Like they melted and reformed. I had high hopes, but now the lenses are distorted. clear, but distorted. Unusable. I will never ever buy any coating for glasses again.

I have a very expensive pair of X-Cel Optical Acclaim 61 computer trifocal lenses that were scratched (coating only) and the coating had started to delaminate. I think this is the typical failure mode. The lenses are made of CR39 plastic (most common) and were coated with iCoat brand of AR (I don't know anything about these guys). The Armour Etch wiped out the outer coating with no problem. However there is an inter coating on my lenses that Armour Etch won't touch and that coating scratches easily. So easily that the brush I'd used to apply the Armour Etch scratched this coating. After playing around with some very strong detergents, 100% isopropyl alcohol, and concentrated sulfuric acid, nothing was working. I tried using toothpaste to polish the surface and it turned the coating into a foggy haze. "#%$*!," I said. Everything was going wrong. Then I used some amyl acetate (I bought it on Amazon) and it dissolved this extra layer of stuff. It didn't come off easily. I needed to aggressively rub a cotton cloth soaked with amyl acetate, but 100% of everything in the coating was removed and the lenses now look perfect. Perhaps another solvent would work better; I don't know. CR39 plastic is rather solvent resistant and I had other uncoated lenses of this same material to experiment with to verify the plastic wouldn't dissolve. There's another KZbinr out there that had my same problem with an additional layer that he couldn't remove. Perhaps this method can help someone out. Note - CR39 is not the highly refraction index polycarbonate lens material which is sometimes also used. I have no idea as to whether amyl acetate will work with this plastic.

Why would you want to remove the anti reflective coating
@chelleanderson8964
@chelleanderson8964 3 жыл бұрын
When you get new glasses most of them come with the coating. What they dont tell you is that certain very common cleaners will damage this coating and cause it to flake. The flaking makes it almost impossible to see through the lenses. I have had my glasses for almost a year, $300 just for the lenses, and never had a problem until I started my housekeeping job 3 months ago. The tiny amount of mist from the disinfectant cleaners I use was enough to cause the coating to flake and I cant see a darn thing. I need these glasses to last me at least another year. Next time I will make sure I tell them I do not want the coatings added to my lenses.

@alicecheng4767

+Melani Y because anti reflective coating can scratch, peel, or wear off and makes it harder to see. You'll start noticing blurriness/glare on everything you see, which can be annoying sometimes. If the reflective coating on your eyeglasses is in good condition, you should not remove it.

in my case.....my lense began to peel so it was like looking though spots of fuzzy only in one eye.......i had apparently got something on them...strong enough it was eating though the lens coating. like bug spray over last weekend. another good reason more people remove the coating is if your lens got too hot or sat in direct sun light to long.....like on the beach the heat can kinda start the cating peeling anyway!! :)

This was my experience too--- I have Warby Parkers--- I did 2 rubbings with q-tips and let sit for 5 minutes each time. No luck-- and vision was worse, as you said.
