Apple cider vinegar worked like a dream with paint on glass!!! This experiment really inspired me. Looking at numerous videos on how to remove paint/logos from glass bottles, this looked the most reasonable. I modified it a bit by putting a paper towel soaked in apple cider vinegar on the painted areas then wrapping Saran Wrap around the whole thing and leaving for 24hrs. I barely had to scrub with an SOS pad to get the paint off. I’m thrilled with the results and grateful this video even existed. Thank you soooo much for posting it.

Apple Cider Vinegar was the best for me! Thank you so much for this video. I let mine soak for a full 24 hours with a paper towel and in plastic wrap since I didn't have a large enough zip lock bag. I was finally able to get the markings off my milk jugs with a little bit of scrapping with a razor blade. Totally a life saver. :)

I soaked a couple of beer bottles in a napkin soaked with ACV, placed the bottles in a Tupperware and filled the Tupperware a few inches high with some more ACV. I left the bottles in the Tupperware with the lid on for about 5 hours. I was shocked when I checked on the bottles- the paint was sweating off the bottle and with one swipe of a paper towel the bottle was completely free of any paint. Thank you so much for your help!

Most of the time i remove labels with rubbing alcohol. I usually have 91% isopropyl alcohol in my medical supplies. That should break down most adhesives and paints on bottles. Some more easily than others. Depends on what type of paint and glue they used but the alcohol works most of the time. Mineral spirits and other paint thinners should work as well.

I have an experience to share with you, 1/2 good, 1/2 bad. Okay, I have 4 identical, painted label bottles. I put a ziplok bag into a tall can, filled the bottle with water to keep it from floating, then added vinegar to the ziplok bag. WOW I was stunned, the first two cleaned up fast! Took less than 2 hours to do BOTH. When the first worked, I put the 2nd bottle in the same vinegar. When I tried the third. NOTHING, so I changed out initial vinegar and replaced with fresh, still NO change. It's strange, because these were purchased the Same day & are identical. Gonna leave it overnite, but it has had 3 hours in first vinegar and 3-4 hours in New vinegar. Hoping that it will be better in the mornin. I'm stumped. I also did a different brand, style bottle after the first 2, used same initial vinegar, it worked Great.

The best way to remove painted on labels is by soaking in acetone. I use this to get heat treated enamel off of coffee pots. I do have to *lightly* rub the paint with the rough side of a sponge and resoak several times, but this is how to get the paint off without damaging the glass. (Scrubbing too hard will scratch it. Be gentle.)

For paper labels: soak it in hot water for few minutes, scrape a bit (e.g. with spoon), soak few minutes more, and then keep scraping until it is gone. Remaining glue goes off easily by scrubbing it off with stainless steel scrubber under the water flow. Done in 10-15 min. For plastic labels: Heat the label with hairdryer for few minutes. It peels off easily. Not always, but usually there is glue residue left behind - mix cooking oil and baking soda into a thick paste (thick enough to easily apply it without much dripping afterwards). Leave for 20-30 min. Scrub off with stainless steel scrubber and dishwash detergent under the water flow. There are no scrubbing marks left on afterwards and bottles and jars look like brand new. I am yet to try removing the print from the glass jar. I am going to mix any kind if vinegar, salt and maybe water, and leave it overnight.

I don't usually need anything to take off the plastic labels as most peel off fairly easily once started. I use a heat gun to remove labels from any heat resistant surface (cardboard, glass, etc.) I have not been successful in removing painted labels from glass so I am excited to try this. I did try acetone covered in plastic wrap and taped over the paint to no avail. Fingers crossed on the apple cider vinegar overnight. :-)

I like to save kombucha bottles that are similar to your blood orange drink. Fill it with water and microwave it to soften the glue so the label doesn't rip when you pull it off, then remove the residue with WD-40 followed by alcohol or soapy water to get rid of the smell.

Perhaps buying acetic acid (the chemical name for vinegar) at the hardware store might work. White vinegar only has about 5% acetic acid, and I think you can find industrial vinegar that has 30% acetic acid. Although acetic acid is a weak acid industrial vinegar should still be handled with caution, and in a well ventilated area.

For adhesive residue try 99% rubbing alcohol or solvent FIRST. If that doesn't remove the glue rub the surface with coconut oil NOT vegetable oil and let the bottle sit on your counter for 24 - 48 hours. Try to remove a small area of the coconut smeared adhesive. If it's softening the glue but still a bit stubborn wait another day or two. Let it sit for a week or more if the glue is really stubborn. Then wipe the coconut oil and adhesive from the bottle with a paper towel and then wash the glass with soap and water. The thick consistency of coconut oil makes it cling to the surface of the glass so you don't need a plastic bag just a little patience.
@HowDoYouDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your tip! I haven't personally tried with vegetable oil or coconut oil, but I know that some oils (like orange oil) will help soften or dissolve the residue within minutes, and some oils don't help at all (this might be the case with vegetable oil, but idunno.)
