Remove Lawn Mower Broken Blade Bolt

Fairly simple if you can get about this way. Sometimes you can use some WD-40 or lubricant to help with the process if this does not work we will need to drill out the center with a reversed thread drill bit and use some form of a EZ out to pull it out. Unfortunately the crank is bent on this motor... but thought I could get you guys a video on how to do this if you need to.

Still helping ppl 4 years later. Went to sharpen the blade and snapped the bolt. Saved me a chunk of change.

I want you to walk around with a big smile today...your trick worked AGAIN! Local shop said nothing they could do, buy a new mower basically. Guy at the muffler shop said come back another day and he'd weld a bolt to it and that should get it out. I got busy with other stuff and today just for sh*ts and grins googled it and what did I find? THIS VIDEO :D Thanks from another guy with tall grass.

Cheers Hank,the mrs went over a low drain cover yesterday with our flymo and the bolt sheared off.I was thinking today to either take it to a repair shop and get the rest of the bolt drilled out,or just go and get a new lawnmower.Just before i left the house i thought about havin a quick look on youtube to see if there were any easy answers and saw your video.It took just two taps with a centrepunch and hammer and within a minute or so was in the car to go and buy just a bolt.What a result,thanks very much for posting it.

Thanks. This worked awesome. Didn’t even have to hole punch it. Sprayed some wd40 in and the broken part moved easily. Screwdriver to turn it

Hank, thanks so much for your helpful video. Your (punch) extraction advice worked like a charm to remove the broken piece. I scored a replacement screw (went with US made stainless) at Ace and quickly resumed my lawn cutting.

This worked like a charm, and I can't really believe it. My bolt was MUCH further in than the one in this video, but the tap worked. After it started coming out a little bit I was able to use a small screwdriver to catch the bolt and turn it. I was a little lucky...the way it broke off left a high point on one edge that made it "easy" to turn.

I work as as a welder fabricator! Seen many broken bolts like this taken out with punch! Another way is cut a slice about 1/8” deep across the entire end an spray it with w-d40 an use a big flat blade screwdriver! Or dill hole in pc of 1” wide steel about 2” long an lay over hole an weld hole to Brocken bolt an unthread. The bolt isn’t bottomed out in the shaft so should be very title is why a punch or slice always works!

Thanks so much! When I saw blade broken out in shaft, thought for sure I'd have to drill it out. Manged to move it enough with the punch, that could spin it out with needle nose pliers.

Ok, so this has happened to my lawnmower a few times when I put the dethatching blade on. The last time I drilled into the bolt, the drill bit ended up wobling out the shaft. Could I fill with JB weld and re tap?

What size is the bolt? Mine just broke, got it out, now I need to replace it. Looks like an SAE 3/8 - 2" but the thread doesn't work with the replacement I got from Menards.

Trouble with mine is its way up in there. Think Ill sell it for parts lol. If its not one thing its another. Just put a new primer bulb on it then a new $60 front plastic axel holer and then repaired the self drive. Then this bolt breaks. Im done. I started to set it on fire :)

Yea ive heard the harbor freight ones are decent not sure though, Im about to start pulling the transmission out of the junk ranger at my dads, its fully rebuilt and my dad wants it off the property finally so Im starting to salvage parts off of it before we scrap the rest. Im going to keep the cat and exhaust, transmission, rear window and a couple other things. Probably going to sell the doors and other shit though
