Far be it from me to tell you how to do your resto. If I were you(and I am not), but if I was, I would pull the entire body off that truck down to a rolling frame, pull the engine/drive train out..and THEN sand blast that frame clean/repaint,redo all the lines with fresh while the body is off(wire loom AN fitted fuel, brake lines),blast off the back axle, replace the springs and all the mounts for cab and bed and engine. Do everything that frame needs to be 100% including replacing pieces unseen that are to far gone with rust to be worthwhile to use and THEN work on that body OFF the frame so you can get to all sides to remove rust and repair whats needed to make it structurally sound to put your family inside of it. It will be more labor intensive and take a longer but the final product journey will get you a ton of new subs watching you screw up repeatedly like we all do on our first resto and it will pay off in the end with a better built, better looking more stable end result with more content along the way....but I'm not you so do w/e you want.Your truck, your way.Have fun.(you might even pick up some product sponsorship along the way.

I would have put the truck out side and sand blasted it with my Harbor freight sand blaster, then blown it off with air then wiped it down with wax & grease remover then put your stuff on it. I did my 70 Ford Sport Custom short bed and it worked very well, and you get in to all the tight place's easy. This will take it down to bare metal though. Kurt

Your best off with a full face mask, with grinding/cutting metal, hot metal sparks fly fast and bounce/ricochet and can get in behind safety glasses. Just wear them both then you double protected. I had a guy painting gas pipe on one of my jobs, and he did good but he also painted the brass ball valve. I told him well you don't have to paint the brass, it wont rust. He replied I look at it this way, it's like birth control while wearing a condom....I just walked away shaking my head.

The biggest no no, using a wire wheel without eye and face protection. Those wire bristles will stick in you, even through your clothes. Your probably better off taking it to a shop to get sand blasted. Enjoyed the family mail time! Goodluck with the project!

Why don't you just take the whole body off the frame so you can get the frame degreased and cleaned real good then sand it then go with the product or even 415 it which is a rust inhibitor. O can't remember off hand if you can paint right over it or not.

I love you guys to death, so please take what I'm going to say as loving guidance from someone who has worked on and been around cars my entire life. And that's quite a few years. It's driving me crazy and breaking my heart to see the way you're going about doing this truck. I know from what you have said that you want the patina look to the paint on this and you had mentioned that you really wanted to do a nice resto-mod job to the drivetrain and suspension. So having said that, you ended up getting a vintage small block instead of the Late Model LS motor you really wanted. It seems you want to do this this job way too fast. By doing that you will eventually spend more money, make more mistakes, and do many of the same things twice or even three times over because of no real planning. Here is my advise as to what you should have done. I would have started on paper and wrote down all the specs of what you want and your budget if you want one. And I mean engine, drivetrain, brakes, body, interior, wheels, etc... The nice part of doing it slowly this way is you can do it in stages over time and save the money you need for each stage. You should have started the physical work by stripping the truck down to a bare rolling chassis. Every single, part, nut and bolt, screw etc, removed, bagged and tagged unless you're not going to reuse it in the rebuild. Then start by doing a mock up of your engine and drivetrain front to rear and if there is any cutting or welding to be done do it now including any modifications needed for the type of suspension you want. When that is done strip the chassis down bare and have the chassis media blasted and powder coated. You can also have any other bolt on chassis parts like suspension, and/or rear differential powder coated at this time too. I forgot to mention that after blasting and powder coating the rear, you should have the ring, pinion, posi, and axles for the differential assembled and in the housing.. When that is complete you can assemble the new suspension, steering components, rear differential and brake system to the chassis. You will now have a completed rolling and steering chassis. At this time you can start start building your motor and assembling your transmission and driveshaft. You will need to assess what body parts will be used over and/or repaired and what will need to be replaced. Then go out and look for the parts you need and try to find them in better condition than what you are replacing. I already see parts of the bed are totally rotted so you may want to source another one. You also have holes in the doors and from what I can see the left front fender. The hood looks fantastic especially for the look you want. I know you want a patina look but you also don't want rotted body parts with holes. Surface rust is OK and can be addressed when you do tie the parts together with a blended patina paint job where needed. I'll send you a link to a channel where these guys do nothing but this type of finish and they produce some of the best I've ever seen. The truck will ride, drive and perform like a modern vehicle, and on the outside look like a well used vintage survivor from Arizona. This kind of job will take you quite a while. Especially for someone like you that doesn't own a shop and will need assistance from outside retail shops to complete some of the work. But when completed you will have it all documented and you will have a vehicle that can eventually be handed down to you Son as an heirloom. It's actually not too late to do this even with what you have already done. Of course in the end the choice is yours. I want to say again that all this advise comes to you from my heart and as fatherly advice. Trust me, I'm old enough. If I lived near you I would even volunteer what ever time and help I could give you. No matter what way you go, I will be following you in your adventure lending advice along the way. You have a beautiful family and I absolutely love the interaction between you and your son and how you are instilling in him the love of classic vehicles and their maintenance. I also love they way you also incorporate your wife in the repair process. From the look in her eyes I think she really appreciates your patience while teaching her. You're a good man, and your channel is unique in its own way because of you. God Bless...
