It’s amazing that more mainstream car reviewers have not acknowledged how brilliant the 50e is. Went from a 21 Base Cayenne to this and there is no comparison. Owned it for 3 months now and after driving it 4,000 miles, have only filled up the tank a few times. It’s a noticeable savings with absolutely no sacrifice. It drives fantastic in all electric mode and it has one of the best internal combustion engines ever made! The self driving mode is also amazing on long road trips. Great review, and great call on hybrids trumping EV’s. Couldn’t agree more.
@tonnyochieng1188 ай бұрын
I disagree.. Hybrids will always be a compliment to EVs and a better alternative to ICE. The only time hybrids will trump EVs is when they offer genuinely decent mileage on battery power alone. As long as you have a driveway/ garage at your house, an EV makes a better choice. I also struggle to see how an increase of a meagre 6kwh battery capacity doubleles this car's range!!
@jgway99808 ай бұрын
@@tonnyochieng118 I think it depends on your situation. I live in 2 different homes that are a 12 hour drive apart. No way does an EV work better than a PHEV for my situation.
@cbatiau25288 ай бұрын
In terms of power, the base Cayenne has never been very good, but it's an inappropriate vehicle to compare with the 50e because it's not a PHEV. But the Cayenne E-Hybrid is better than the 50e in almost every way except for price. I'm cross-shopping them, and it's hard for me to find anything else (other than price) where the 50e is better. There are numerous ways that the GLE 450e is better than both the 50e and the E-Hybrid, but it's such an ugly vehicle to me (looks like a minivan, and don't get me started with the absurd exterior badging and seat controls on the doors).
@jgway99808 ай бұрын
@@cbatiau2528 the 50e has more HP and torque than the Cayenne E-Hybrid right off the bat so I’m not sure how hard you’re looking but it took me a couple seconds to find something better in the 50e. If you like the Porsche get the Porsche. You’re preaching to the choir with Porsche, I’ve owned a base 991.2, a 992 Carrera S, a Boxster, and a Cayman along with the base Cayenne. They’re great cars but the last couple years I’ve swayed to BMW. Porsche has become way overpriced in my opinion. And that’s spoken from someone who loved Porsche since I could walk basically. I stick by my comment though, the 50e is miles better than a 2021 base Cayenne and it’s completely fair to compare them because they are in the same price range. Porsche always gets the benefit of comparisons to cars that are thousands less (I.e. M2 vs Cayman GTS $65k vs $100k). One more note, I even test drove a 2023 Macan S same day as the 50e and the 50e just felt like a more expensive vehicle. Way more torque and smoother ride. But yes if you want to argue those 2 are not a fair comparison I’ll give you that although they were the same price.
@jgway99808 ай бұрын

I own this car. I have added 1.5 tanks of gas in 4 months with lots of driving in sport mode. My favourite feature is "pre-conditioning". The car uses the battery to warm to my desired temperature before I leave for work or at the end of my day. Every time I get into the car, the interior temp is 20C, the windows are clear of frost, ice and snow, and I just drive. That is luxury.

Can you please say "kilowatthours" when talking about battery capacity. It is simply not correct saying it has 24 kilowatts. It implies that it can only supply an electric motor with 24 kilowatts. I have the 2023 BMW X5 45e, it is a wonderful car all around. Completely disagree with RBR's comments at 7:55, he obviously never drove it. Even the US spec car gets 30 miles of range, the UK / Euro version is probably closer to 35 to 40 miles of range. The 45e also has the iDrive7 layout with actual buttons and doesn't look at cheap as the tacked screen on the 50e. The 45e is a very refined, quite, and smooth vehicle overall and great daily driver. The transfer between power is great, regen is great, brake feel is great. My main complaint is just the lack of second row leg room. I want to rent a 50e for a few days to compare. The initial year release of the 50e did have some issues too, which I am sure they will have mostly worked out by the 2025 MY. The original X5 40e PHEV was more limited and a bit more questionable and range was less.

@@cbatiau2528 these are all opinion based advantages and hardly a reason to pay a minimum 20% more for the Porsche. Cayenne has never won any awards for looks. First time I’ve heard someone compare the looks of an X5 to a minivan. It’s always been considered one of the most traditional, sporty looking SUV’s available. Do you work for Porsche? You stated in my thread that the E-Hybrid beats the 50e in just about every category but I still can’t find anything😝
@cbatiau25288 ай бұрын
@@jgway9980 No, I don't work for Porsche. :-) I see the GLE 450e as a better vehicle than the X5 50e aside from the former looking like a minivan whale and having ugly exterior badging/trim (I don't see the 4-cylinder engine as all that bad in a PHEV if the drivetrain is done well; for example, the Volvo XC60 T8 has a smooth drivetrain and superb power/torque, on a par with the X5 50e). Your price comparisons are apt, but I understand that the premium prices for Porsches are there for a reason (without justifying them, and with hatred for those higher prices); I do like that you have so many different options to add on (or not add on), to make it more what you want, and Porsche has many more types of options that Mercedes and BMW and Audi and Volvo do not (like infrared camera, heated windshield, all-metal roof, compass-clock on dashboard, etc.). I wrote that the GLE 450e looks like a minivan, not the 50e. And I agree that the Cayenne is like a whale -- but then the 50e and 450e are like whales also, as is the Volvo XC90 (the XC60 looking better by far than the larger XC90). I wish that Porsche made the Macan in e-hybrid form, as I like the size of the Macan much more. I do prefer the PHEV concept. Kyle Conner did a 40-mph range test on the 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid and got 45 miles of all-electric range. He did the same on the GLE 450e and got 68 miles. I don't think he's done an X5 50e range test yet; wish he would. Have you ever driven the 50e from full to empty (charge) in electric-only in non-highway-speed (i.e., local stop-and-go) traffic, which is how PHEVs should be run when in all-electric, and if so, what have you gotten?
@jgway99808 ай бұрын
@@cbatiau2528 got it, I actually had a Volvo XC60 PHEV (the 455 hp one) and it was very nice. I prefer the 50e over it but then again the XC60 is quite a bit cheaper so also a great option in my opinion. I do drive my 50e in electric to empty and it does about 45 miles in the mountains. Agree, a Macan PHEV would make so much sense. If Macan EV sales are lackluster (I believe they will be), Porsche will come around. Keep me posted on what you decide on! All good options, and as far as looks, if you love how the vehicle rides and drives, the looks will grow on you lol.

@@jgway9980 Are you on any auto forums? We could message there. I currently have an XC60 T8 ER, planning to trade it in for one of the PHEVs mentioned here ... I test-drove the 50e yesterday and found it interesting -- better-looking than the GLE 450e but not nearly as good all-around as the 450e (much-worse all-electric range, and the MB has better screens in my opinion -- though none of them are as good as the Cayenne's screens are). I just heard today that MB is coming out with a GLC 350e later this year, which is more my preferred size (less "boaty"), but that interior really sucks (too screen-oriented for me) -- at least the GLC ICE version (I doubt they'll change the interior for the PHEV version). It's bizarre to me that the GLE has a much-better interior than does the GLC; Volvo and Porsche interior layouts tend to be very similar from one model to another...

great review! re the car, I am wondering how reliable will be the complex system long-range, with impact on depreciation. for instance, one will use mostly the electric range since it covers daily use; but, when the ice engine kicks-in, like in heavy acceleration, how will be protected at high revs when cold (since it will not be use and the oil will be cold). thoughts?
@HQBProductions8 ай бұрын
That concerns me as well….starting a cold engine at 50 mph and flooring it for a fast move is never a good idea. However, I have been told that the engine is pre warmed as you start off…but is that true when the goal is better EV range?🤔
@Chrischen05897 ай бұрын
Even if that wares the engine 300% as fast it really doesn’t matter as you are running the engine at a much lower level. And the rev limit for when oil is cold has been implemented for BMWs for ages it really out smart human import in turns of protecting the engine. If resale value is a concern then a new German luxury SUV is simply not what you are looking for as they are all terrible at holding values..

Firstly, am a big fan of BMW. My current drive is the X3 30e hybrid. Great car, joke e-Range! Yes, I’m the self employed person saving 50% tax on my company car, otherwise would have leased the diesel. The 50e is wonderful and a complete Allrounder. One thing I’d like to say however. If the police see you with your mobile in your hand, you’re in the shit. Just having it to your ear warrants a hefty fine. Modern cars, these days, all have touch screens, and this 50e has now got so many systems inside that touch screen. Question: Driving at speed, operating that touch screen, looking away from the road whilst doing so is obviously not dangerous at all, is it? Of course, it’s a rhetoric question. I’m not a fan of touch screens, bring back the buttons BMW!

45E has a range of closer to 70km or 44miles ,the new 50e has about 60 miles or 90km , the ease of use with the BUTTONS on the 45e is far safer and more efficient than touch screens, but it’s probably a cost saving measure much like the the lack of buttons to fold the rear seats down from the booth. Looks wise it’s splitting hairs, from a Tec perspective the 50e is better and the hybrid is probably the best on the market for the luxury market. It’s a mid life upgrade but it’s a considerable upgrade Tec wise and power wise, some really good value out there on 45e,s at the moment 24-36 months old, so if you are looking for a luxury suv hybrid look there, EV distances are not to dissimilar if to commute 20miles from home and interior design is probably better in the 45e from a user interface prospective, save the planet and your money and buy a 24-36 old 45e then wait for prices to fall on the 50e in 2 plus years and trade up ..😊
