2 tips that would have made your life a whole lot easier. 1. Remove the transfer case before trying to remove the transmission. 2. Once the transfer case is out, you can tilt the entire engine and transmission back to get more access to the upper bellhousing bolts. Just make sure you don't go too far and break things on between the top rear of engine and firewall.

yes you have to have long extensions or a bunch of short ones if you let the transmission drop down just a little bit the motor will drop down with it, you got to use long extensions with a swivel with maybe a 15 mm socket on the end of it but it was 5 or 6 years ago when I did the job but it wasn't that bad i replaced a rear main seal in a 2002 Tahoe same engine same transmission in less than 4 hours and charged the dude $180 and oh yeah don't forget to take the vortec cover off the top of the engine before you let the transmission drop down a little

The transmission lines have a plastic guard near the nut. You just have to pull it back and use a pick to take the clips off. Then pull the lines out. Make sure to mark them *top and bottom (T) & (B)* before doing so.

Sorry for your problems. Unfortunately when you rounded out the nuts on the exhaust studs. I'm sure it took the wind out of you sails. I feel for you brother. Yep, I'm that technician that dose this job every day. And yes there are times when exhaust bolts can be a pain in the butt. Please Note: you or your vehicle are not special in this department. And yes some cars and trucks can be worse than others. I've learned before I even start a job involving the removal of any exhaust components I spray all the fasteners down with penetrating fluid. Next I roll my torch "THE FIRE WRENCH" over to the vehicle. Cars and trucks in the north eastern United States are always a rusted mess. So a 6 point socket is a must. Lets move on a fix this. Heat up the remainder of what is left of the nuts on the exhaust manifold and go at it with we call a "turbo-socket". You can get this tricked out socket at Sears. It's a heavy serrated socket made for the removal of buggered up nuts, and bolts. such what you presented us, in your video. If you can't get a hold of full sized torch, You can grab a Mapp gas at Sears when your buying the socket. Work at it slowly, back and forth spraying and heating. Do your best not to snap the studs off. And if you do. Your options are drilling and taping Or new after market exhaust manifold with hardware for about a 100 bucks. I'm sure once you get past this point. Your spirits will be lifted. good luck stay dirty and remember nothings better than the satisfaction of fixing it yourself

Jesus H. Lmao I’m sorry buddy but this video really made my day. I’ve literally done hundreds of transmissions and the best advice I can give you is invest in a 3 foot extension, swivel sockets and some ramps if you’re going to back yard these all the time. I almost put on the theme to Titanic to play over your video. Unless you’ve done something before- please ask the questions before you start because that will save you lots of aggravation- ( even though it was comical to watch you. Been there several times. Get alot of extensions. Not one solid one because you will need the added play from a ton of small ones. Go over the transmission to get to the two outside ones. Use a ratcheting 15 mm (longer the shank the better) to get the very top one from behind the intake and block. You will have to raise the tail of the transmission to do this but it makes life easier. Job is not that hard. When you get frustrated from it take a break instead of just chopping parts off next time

Yeah good job, but 4 min into it I was trying to figure out why we were even considering removing transmission lines from the radiator. Glad to see you decided to do the work on the transmission side of things, but your not supposed to unscrew the fittings in this case there are metal clips you can remove that hold the lines in place. I quit watching but amazing that so many people watched this video for some not so great advice.

PB Blast EVERYTHING before mounting a socket/wrench on anything, especially Northeastern rust buckets. I've done a few of these and I swear by PB Blast. It's like Frank's red hot sauce, I put that shit on everything! Best to let it sit overnight or at least a few hours before tackling them. Swivel sockets are a MUST, at least swivel adaptors and 2+ feet of extensions. No need to ever remove anything from the engine (except the plastic Vortec engine cover). No need to undue anything else. Oh and lose the transfer case, trans is already heavy enough! Great advice on letting ppl know not to fuck with the torsion bars. Just use extensions and keep it moving.

Drop the rear of the transmission down,and use a long extension to get the bell housing bolts,i also stripped the exhaust bolts,but didn't cut pipes,take trans back further and drop it out,also the torque converter bolts are not 9/16 or 5/8,there just hex shaped the Allen hex is what you use to remove t conv.

I wonder why your first Harbor Freight impact didn’t remove those bolts. I soaked mine with oil and heated them with Mapp Gas and they came out just fine with the 110v HF impact. I wonder if your socket wasn’t fitting tight on the bolts. Also that rubber boot on the driveshaft splines, all I did was slide it on and off. Also I found a step by step procedure a guy had online. I still have it saved. I could have had mine swapped for $600, I paid $350 for a trans that supposedly had 30k and was rebuilt. Once I started there was no turning back.

Dan d Anything that has splines should really go back the exact way they came off. The splines will wear in and the surfaces will mate and Polish together and will be a lot happier and will have a lot less vibration if the splines line back up exactly the way they have been in place since day one. After doing this kind of work for 30 years you learn all the tricks. Is it a must to do this? No Is it a plus? Absolutely! It only takes a second to mark it with a paint marker and put it back the same way it came off. You literally lose no time doing this.

next time you are wanting to turn the engine to take out the torque converters bolts take a long flat screw driver or flat pointed pry bar and place it in the fly wheel teeth and pry the motor around to get to each bolt. that way you can do it all with out moving from the place you are taking the bolts out. and to get to all the bell housing bolts easily jack up the trans mission and slide back or take out the cross member and lower the transmission down and you can get to the bolts easy. once you get the transmission lowered you can take a 4 ft 1/2 extension and place socket on it then work your ratchet from behind the transmission once you have the top bolts all out or all you jack the transmission back up and put the cross member back in if your changing just the motor. and place your jack under the pan of the transmission to support it when you pull the engine.in this video you are sure making it hard on yourself lol.

I feel your pain as I've done it too but...... WOW you made a lot of extra work for yourself. It's tricky in a driveway but you were your own worst enemy. If you're gonna drive Chevy's you're gonna need a Haynes and /or Chiltons manual. I love my Chevys but they're a pain in the ass until you've replaced all the pot metal parts and poorly soldered electrical components with aftermarket. Your other mistake was replacing it with another 4L60E. You should of upgraded to the 4L80E which is built way better.
@LSp8
@LSp8 5 жыл бұрын
Not many 4L80e's around when you need 4wd unless you wanna swap the tail shafts. They are indeed a much better trans but it's easier to just get another 60 in there just as long as it's built with upgraded parts, especially the 3-4 pax. Most 4L80's I've seen are set up for 2WD (Express Vans/Savannah's)

It really is not that bad. Get about 3 feet of 3/8” extensions, add a universal joint and the socket and take on those bellhousing bolts from over top of the transmission. On the top hardest to get ones there is a 13mm nut holding on brackets then a 15mm nut that actually holds the bell housing. With air tools it was no problem at all to get them off. Just make sure that when you take the 13mm nuts off you remove the bracket the nut goes on or you cannot get to the 15mm. Hardest part of doing the job on the ground is actually removing and installing the transmission

Can you explain what Cadillac is saying when they mention their transmission has the exclusive viscous clutch! I don’t understand. Is it made of rubber that makes the shifts so smooth? I’m also trying to find a low mileage engine and transmission for my car. I enjoy driving it in winter weather versus my 2016 Ford Transit Connect titanium long wheel base with the 2.5 four cylinder engine. Thank you. Joseph DuranJr; PO Box 2807; Espanola, New Mexico 87532

Outch. Should keep the trans bolted to the motor. Support the trans, remove the support bar, then lower the trans until you can look over it and remove the upper bolts first.

21 minutes you don't need to unscrew transmission cooler fitting on transmission, I believe there is a little clip you pull out and line slides out. Same as radiator side.

Two options for the wrench sizes you can take your 19mm and add a dime or washer inside it old trick or make a wrench out of your 18mm and file some meat off the inside until you get 18.5mm besides That I would take the entire front clip ,Hood and fenders off pull the Rad, unbolt the transfer case only six bolts then pull the entire motor with trans. keep your trans jack under it and use your cherry picker and roll the whole thing forward up and out more work but faster in the long run not as much crawling under the truck...

Robert- Thank you for the comment. As to removing the engine and tranny together, I agree and had been contemplating doing just that myself which would enable me to also clean the engine, drop and clean the oil pan and replace all the gaskets and seals on the engine at the same time with only a little extra work.

The exhaust flange bolts are always replaced… heat the nuts, or $12.00 stud puller head. Ratchet and a hammer works.

I’ll give you credit for doing it yourself and sticking with it after all the trouble and confusion you made it out to be. You obviously don’t have a clue on what you are doing but still decide to make a how to video advising people what to do. It’s like the blind leading the blind but eventually you might get there but this video will more than likely just make someone that’s willing to try it there self think twice about doing it. You made it so much more difficult and confusing then it really has to be you don’t know if you have to do this or that and you make more work than necessary and I really hope anybody that’s going to attempt this bypasses this do it yourself video and watches one of the other hundreds on this job because this is not the best or the only video out there (FACT) and is a fairly easy job it should take you no more than four hours to have that out and the other one put in and running down the road and in most cases that’s even taking your 40min break to soak it in cider lol

99 Tahoe, have had to mechanic it more in 3 yrs than all the other vehicles in life combined, 2 Saburban, 2 CHEVY trucks, 4 door boat impala. And now have to go through this shit with Tahoe now. After you have had to fix everything else you wonder do I replace vehicle or keep one you know what has already be remedied... thought 2 yrs ago Tahoe was good to go for awhile. Found Tahoes are never going to be good for a while unless your putting it up on jack stands for display. That the only way it will be good for while. Glad I don't own shot gun. One dead Tahoe it would be!!!!!
