Something's Not Right (With This Hot Mixed Lime)

We've been making steady progress with hot mixed lime and filling holes in the stone walls of our utility room and we're almost done - with this phase of this room. But we've been having some issues with the quicklime we've been using.

The pointing material used should never be 'harder' that the bricks or stones of in the wall. The idea is that the wall will deteriorate over time and you want the pointing to fail before the bricks or stones break as these cannot be replaced. CL90 sets with the CO2 in air, therefor it is better to store it submerged in water for longer periods. HCL sets with moisture (in the air) and must be used fairly quickly. CL90 is a natural product that can be used (disposed of...) in the garden as it will bring calcium and raise the soil's pH and improve moisture retention. Apply 5kg per 100 square meter to be safe. Up to 50kg per are can be incorporated if a correction of 1 pH is required in heavy/clay soil.

It would be easier for you to add most of your water first. Then when you hit it with the drill to mix it up, it mixes a lot easier and quicker. You should thoroughly mix it for 3 minutes after it is initially mixed. Did it for 65 years...

We had exactly the same happen to us with Cal Viva in both rock form and powder. Definitely humidity in our case, worked spot on as whitewash and still useable for making render.

I wonder if the rain you've had recently has increased general humidity and got into the lime. Using normal gypsum plaster I've had the frustration often enough of it hardening in the bucket before I can use it because it's been exposed to moisture, due to the supplier not storing it properly. If it's a very old batch, as you say, it's been sitting around getting time to react. This stuff should probably have a use by date like food 😄

...the plastic sheeting is both the culprit and the medium by which condensation is forming inside (not dripping on or into) the bags. In Canada plastic sheeting is used as an "air / vapour barrier" to deliberately accomplish this. Well, not exactly the destructive contamination you experienced, but it's intended use is to act as a barrier in a wall system placed in the wall to control the location of the condensation point between cool, humid, outside air ( remember; Canada) and warm(er), dry(er), interior air, or vice versa depending on the season i.e. The plastic "air/vapour barrier" is placed within the wall mass in a location just before where the atmospheric pressure and temperature gradient would force the water vapour to condense into a liquid state within the mass of the wall, doing a lot of damage via rot. Instead, water remains in the vapour state safely towards the outside of the wall mass. Combine this with good air circulation and, if you're not in Canada, heat, and the vapour is carried away keeping the wall mass dry. No damage done to the wall. You just happened to conduct an unintentional science experiment proving this: In a cold, humid room with a semi plastic-wrapped pallet of quick-lime... where the plastic was positioned between the nearby cold(er), damp-ish wall and the slightly less cold, dry(er) pallet of lime - which would continue getting warmer (via the exothermic chemical reaction of the lime and condensing water vapour) and also warming the air, thus able to absorb more water, in contrast to the still cold, still wet(ish) wall, forcing more and more condensation to form in the air adjacent to the plastic. Unfortunately the plastic encouraged the condensation point to begin to occur in the air all around, and within, the mass of the bags of quick-lime (not on the plastic, hence no 'dripping'), which is why you can't see liquid water on the plastic or dampening the outside of the bags. The short version is: the plastic is obviously not creating an air-tight, water-proof seal around the bags, you've inadvertently created a fog-machine. It's like wearing a rubber raincoat on a sunny day. This is a really helpful thing to remember, if you're ever stranded in the desert with nothing but a plastic sandwich bag, and are dying of thirst. Or you could change your last name to Skywalker, and become a "moisture farmer", harvesting water vapour for your garden. Battling Sith overlords is a voluntary option, for devil may care younger folk. It's also, as you recall, similar to the point of the lecca condensation break in your floor system to create an air barrier, in this case keeping liquid water in the soils below from either rising by hydrostatic pressure or wicking by direct contact with the (future) poured interior concrete floor. Air circulation (I.e. get rid of the plastic ) to moderate the transition, and dull the destructive effect of the condensation point, between cold/wet and warm(er)/dry will save your stock of lime (and by the way the plaster on your walls, on top of those cold, damp stone walls). This is why building materials mostly come on wooden pallets with open spaces between the planks; it's the air circulation. Yayyyy building science!

I understand the science but don’t think that’s what is happening here. The plastic isn’t wrapping the bags, and the plastic against the wall isn’t touching the bags. If it were only the bags sitting in the bottom and closest to the wall then that would support the condensation theory, however all the bags were affected. The other cal viva was stored in exactly the same way, and for months longer without any adverse effects

I store the CL90 under water... yes, SUBMERGED under water protected from the air (oxygen...) in 80L buckets. CL90 can be stored like this for many years. As you surely know CL90 can be used to paint walls too if the CL90 was produced no later than 2 months prior to using it as paint. This time limit is very important to avoid white powder coming of the walls some time later. To solve that timing issue the CL90 can be submerged in water and used much much later. An older craftsman told me that the longer it is stored like that the better the quality becomes. We have been using CL90 that is stored for over 6 years like this to paint stables. Check the bags for the production date, in our place it is rather difficult to find it on time. Don't do this with NHL types...

If you've got a good supply of strong binbags or other large plastic bags, it may be worth considering putting the lime into them to reduce the impact of moisture even further. You also may want to try to apply the lime to a wall to see if it does set (it could be used in deep holes perhaps). If it doesn't set hard you may have problems using it. Maybe if there's an outhouse or wall that won't get the weather so bad that you could use it on. Failing that, when I did a bricklaying course we used lime not cement because it can be repeatedly dampened, and used again. If you have a dehumidifyer as well, that may be better to leave in a room when you store lime (in plastic bags).

Quicklime in bags has a finite shelf life. I had the same issue with some cl80 I bought and after a year in bone dry condition the product wouldn’t slake. Also I have never seen lime slaked that way with so much water added first. Usually it’s dry slaked with sand and then water added gradually.

Seems like you had transportation/factory micro holes in the bags and they sucked in the air humidity for months, and probably reached some critical point when the rain came that made the bags explode and then they dried up. You should be able to mix it with less water and more mixing

Have you considered using a piping bag for liming the walls? I've seen it on a french channel where they were doing the same work. Albeit having to sift the sand(?) first to get out anything that can block the tube, the time saved was worth it!

Someone commented to protect your hands when using lime (and certainly CL90). Please do.... latex gloves or household cleaning gloves are good enough. By al means also protect your eyes as that stuff is having an aggressive basic pH. Keep clear running water at hand just in case, acting very quickly is of essence as it will mess up your sight in seconds. If you had the 'unfortunate chance' to feel how CL90 'burns' on a minor scratch on your hand or forearm you know what it will do with your eyes...

great video, I am wondering if you could re-dry the lime as basically lime rock is heated to a certain temperature for x long to get rid of the moisture and create the stuff you have in the bags. Maybe done in batches in an old big pot placed on a bonfire. Just thinking aloud about this and am not aware of all the details in making lime, so you would need to investigate things. As always thanks for posting.

It has been a super hot year weather wise.. maybe that may of had something to do with it ? Or just a faulty batch 🤔
