Freshwater leeches are a common sight on turtles but some turtle species can free themselves of them. When it comes to alligator snapping turtles, they can easily become infested with leeches because they spend the majority of their lives submerged under water. Our giant alligator snappers are covered in leeches and I’ve called on friends to give me a hand with safely removing them!

Who is Garden State Tortoise? 🧐
However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our KZbin channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.

@10:00 I never realized how cute it is when turtles desperately flail their feet around trying to run away as they're being held, but they're only treading air... poor babies, lol. Btw, your turtles are always a joy to see, especially the snappers.

that was my idea of them too until I saw the first video on Chief Brody. He might look ugly but he's still a fantastic representation of his species. And I now find it so "cute" to see the big guy with his mouth open looking so fierce!

Probably not a bad idea to teach little children to be careful around snappers. By the same token parents should teach their kids about the important role reptiles play in nature, including snakes.

Wow LEECHES...Love your channel! I live in nearby Cape May. Visiting friends in Vermont they have a small pond (2,000sq ft) for swimming! However it has leeches. They were going to add crawfish that will eat the leeches which will greatly reduce, cleanup the leeches. Then later add bass to eat both the crawfish and leeches.

“Another method of controlling leeches is to utilize leech traps. To do this, take an aluminum or coffee can, punch small holes in them that are small enough for leeches to fit in, then use bait such as raw chicken and put it into the pond's shallow areas” -fitzfishponds “Most any fish large enough to eat leeches will eat them, but you may consider adding more aggressive fish like bass or redear sunfish to your pond.“ - thepondguy
